UW Transfer BSN 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello! I'm posting here to get any feedback from previous UWSoN students or current prenursing students who are applying for the 2019 cohort. A little bit about me is that I'm currently a student at OC in Washington, my prereq GPA for UW's required classes is about a 3.81 and my cumulative GPA is a 3.7. I have been working as a CNA/Medication assistant for almost half a year and will be continuing working until I move to Seattle for school. Any advice is greatly appreciated on housing, how to study for the proctored essay, and any way to better my chances! Thank you!

Thanks for the info Adrian. As always, very nervous time for us.

Does anybody know how many people are generally invited to the proctored essay?

wow! Adrian, thank you so so much for the update! It gives me fresh hope.

That hamster freaking out picture is basically me this whole month lol. I think previous years was about 250 people invited? Generally no matter how high the number of applicants is it doesn't seem to go over 300 max.

Hi everyone!

It's getting closer to the proctored essay so I thought I would check in.

Thank you berserk_angel & bluepurplegreen for the reassurance. I'm trying to let it go and accept that whatever happens, happens. I have just put this off for a few years now, so I really want this year to be the year I finally begin my nursing career.

I forgot to put my stats in last time, so here they are:

Prereq. GPA is 3.85, with Microbiology left to take (Spring 2019). I received my first Bachelor's in 2014, majoring in Cultural Anthropology and have since been working with an agency who supports adults living with developmental disabilities. The last 3 years, I have been working in a supervisory position with the agency that has given me over 6,000 hours of leadership experience. I have worked as an NA-R for an adult family home to those who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS (~1,525 hours under an RN & LPN), I also included my 35 clinical hours for the CNA program (cause every little bit counts and I had the opportunity to complete them at the hospital vs. a nursing home), and last summer I volunteered for 2 weeks in the Dominican Republic at 2 local maternity hospitals (50 hours). Currently, I work on the weekends at a rehabilitation center that has given me 184 hours. I also volunteer every week with the local Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault center, providing medical advocacy to sexual assault survivors (about 800 hours). The two areas that concern me the most with my application are repeating classes and my letter of rec. I have had to retake gen. chem., human A&P, and I will be re-taking micro. However, I have only had to retake the classes once and I achieved a 4.0 in gen. chem. and the A&P series the 2nd time around. Also, the nurse who did my recommendation is from the rehab center I work at on the weekends and I have only been there since October, so I am worried that she wasn't able to answer the Q's in much depth simply because she doesn't know me too well. So we will see. Fingers crossed!!

Hi Everyone!

New here, just found this forum, and so glad I did. I've also applied to the 2019 fall cohort ? I am actually a registered psychiatric nurse in Canada but my education doesn't transfer to the US so I am starting over. The application process was so nerve wracking because I've been out of school for over 6 years, and I've had to take some courses online to make up the UW prereqs (chem series ?).

Glad to hear it'll be 80/550 instead of 700. I just want to know about the proctored essay already ?

Hi All!

I cannot believe I didn't know this forum existed until today! What a great resource for us to interact and support one another. It is also my first time applying to UW's BSN program. A little about myself: I earned a BS from UW a few years ago and after a career change, decided to begin working as a CNA to gain experience and decide if nursing was right for me. I have been with SCH for almost 2.5 years and not only love the organization, but love how supportive many of the nurses I have worked with have been in showing me what it means to be a great nurse. I feel so fortunate to work as part of a teaching hospital. The answer if obviously yes, I was meant to be a nurse. This past Autumn I returned to a local CC to finish my last few prerequisites and to retake a course that I didn't do well in during a rough quarter of my undergrad. I am currently taking A&P2 and will be completing Stats/retaking Microm in the Spring.

I agree with several of you that it was very difficult to fit everything you wanted to say into the word limit for the resume and essay. I imagine that they wanted us to show them that we were able to follow directions and articulate ourselves well while still being direct and including relevant information.

Has anyone found any great resources for preparing for the proctored essay? My understanding is that we will likely have one hour to complete 3 math story problems and the essay. I read on a previous forum here that they recommend you complete the math problems first, so that you can focus on your essay after. I would like to practice a few example math problems and essay topics to help ease the jitters.

Please let me know if you have any questions for me or if you have found any examples to take a look at. Good luck everyone! ?

UDub1861, nice to see another SCH worker here! Are you on one of the units? Working here the last few years has been incredible, and I feel like I've learned so much. ?

As for the number invited to the proctored essay, I thought I'd heard rumors of 200-250 as well, but no concrete info on my end.

Hope everyone is doing well on their last few pre-reqs (if taking any!) and I'm sure everyone else is feeling just as impatient as I am. My poor email has been getting refreshed so many times lately. ?

I forgot to mention in my last comment, for those looking for resources for the proctored essay: There's a proctored essay info session on Tuesday, 2/5 at 4PM at UW! It'll be at D209 Turner Auditorium in Health Sciences Building. It's being hosted by the Future Nurses Club at UW, and I know a few people who are currently in the nursing program and a few of my coworkers who graduated from UW will be there to give info/tips and answer questions. There's an event on facebook if you want more info!

Thanks bluepurplegreen for the information. How do we sign up for the info session??

I just RSVP’d for the Facebook event! That’s all you need to do as far as I know.

UGHHHHHHH I have a 12 hr shift that day and it's killing me not to go!! I have a friend who's promised to take good notes...Ahhhh!!!

Those attending, I hope you learn a lot!!

Berserk, I work 7p-7a that night.. so it’s gonna be a long night. I feel your pain! ?
