UW ABSN Summer 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone! Since applications will open within the next 2 months for the University of Washington's Accelerated Nursing Program for the Summer of 2018, I figured I would go ahead and start this article to start sharing knowledge and supporting each other through the next 6-12 months of preparation.

I am 35 years old and applying for this program after 18 years in telecom.

I look forward to "meeting" everyone!

Also, for future students who seek practice with math problem-solving for the proctored essay, I used this to help test myself and understand similar scenarios as the ones that may be used in the exam.

Hi guys! How did you do on the essay?? Anyone willing to compare answers? I got 0.4mL for the first one, then 5 tablets, then 0.6mL. I'm hoping that's what everyone else got too...

What scenario did you guys write about? I was surprised how quickly the time flew by! My hand was so cramped after writing so quickly lol

I got the same answers for the math section!

I chose to write about patient #1. I have a lot of friends who had similar (but less extreme-- no one was homeless) situations with their parents when we were teenagers and felt like I had the most to say about him. What about you?

Hey!

I got those same answers. Honestly I feel kind of disappointed. I spent too much time trying to figure out what to write I ended up scrambling at the end and got disorganized. I chose #1 because I have no experience with working with homeless people, transgender, or those younger than me but still close in age. I thought that it would teach me how to communicate with someone who has so many barriers and how I can get them to trust me. I tried to talk about how I would try and adapt to their need since they are most likely less trustful of people considering his parents kicked him out and how I need to advocate for him to make sure we don't simply discharge him back on the streets.

Quite frankly I'm worried haha. I don't feel very confident since I scrambled last minute and organization is important in these proctored essays. I think I was trying to communicate too much when it only had a 2 page limit which caused me to write really small so my hand definitely cramped up a lot haha.

They said they would contact us by email correct? I know In the past they did phone calls but I guess not this year?

Same answers on the math. Honestly felt a little at a loss to show my work on the third one because my instincts were screaming "DUH!!!!" And I ended up having to force myself to think through the dimensional analysis for it.

i chose to write on patient number 2. I have worked in mental health for 5 years and have counseled clients from myriad backgrounds, many of which lined up with the situations presented, so I chose her because the pending psych assessment and the fact that she was an imminent threat of harm to herself or others made her a very special case that I have non-nursing training to handle that others in my clinical group may not.

She also, I felt, presented good opportunities for growth (since I've sat in the ER with multiple clients pending psych evals for hospitalization, but never in the role of the nurse) and solid, writable challenges (given the nature of her crisis and the fact that I'm male).

i just hope they can read my handwriting. My hand was so cramped by the end, I gave up on attempting a copy without scratch outs and such.

Ditto on the math answers!!

I chose scenario 3 because it was the patient I have the least experience caring for and focused on how this would push me to develop new skills and perspectives.

So glad we all are through this final hurdle...and now we wait, but at least we have each other to keep us company.

I don't know Cpark96, I feel like what you just wrote here sounds great, I'm sure it went well. We are all our harshest critics afterwards! And yes, we will get an email (not a phone call) in mid-late December.

Did they mention how many people applied this year?

I believe they said 170 something (maybe 178?) people applied. Lower number than I thought it would be!

I heard them say 171 and I agree with shakethedust that this is less than I thought also. From what I recall seeing from prior years posts, 48 admitted and 30-50 Will male waitlist with usually the first 20ish make it in from the waitlist. So we all have better odds than in prior years with over 200 applicants :)

Is anyone else applying to other colleges? I decided to apply for the Seattle U APNI program but UW doesn't offer physiology lab so I'm going to have to take it at a community college.

@Cpark96 I am applying to other programs as well, just in case, but I am not applying to Seattle U. My primary desire is the ABSN, but I am also planning to apply to the UW BSN, and a few area colleges/community colleges too. I know how competitive it is so I am planning ahead!

I decided against Seattle U since as a post-baccalaureate I couldn't qualify for their regular scholarships which bring it down from the $56K per year. I just couldn't justify that amount of debt. I do have several friends who graduated from SU and loved their program!
