UTMB Summer '09 Applicants

Published

I'm wondering who applied for the UTMB Summer 2009 semester, and if they have received any news from UTMB. My status says "pending", and all my information was received. I don't know how big the applicant pool is considering the hurricane. I haven't seen any news on here about UTMB recently, so anything is appreciated. Thanks.

No, i'm not applying for HCC.

Bazooka, I was trying to find my Hep B shot records, but am not able to, and now that I think about it, I am not even sure if I ever got the shot. I think you said that you had already got yours done? Should get them done....again? Or is there another way of finding out?

Thankss!

I started mine in 2005. I graduated high school in 2003, and somehow managed to avoid ever getting my Hep B shot. (which should have prevented me from graduating, but I guess it wasn't that big of a deal). If you graduated around that time or later, I would definitely check with your doctor to see if the shots are on your record. You don't want to over-vaccinate yourself. At least get the titer done to see if you are immune or not. If not, then you might not have ever had the shots. I would get this done soon, because you can't do any clinicals without those shots. They take 6 months to complete, and it is what kept me from ever becoming an EMT. (I am glad I decided against being an EMT, but that's beside the point.) They were not a required vaccination until the last 5 or 6 years I think. Good luck

Does anyone know how important it is to have health experience in order to get into UTMB's Nursing Program? I do not have much experience. The only thing infact I can think of is volunteering in the ER at a local hospital and visiting nursing homes. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I don't know. I don't have much experience either. I was a lifeguard, I visited nursing homes, and I've been hospitalized quite a few times.... but other than that....no. I did call UTMB today, and they said they JUST started reviewing applications. If we are invited for an interview, then we will be notified by e-mail in the next couple weeks. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!! I really hope I get an e-mail, because I didn't get any feedback whatsoever from UT-Houston. That was upsetting, but UTMB seems to be more promising.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about UT-Houston. I know how hard that is as I have been there. I also called UTMB a few days ago and they told me that they were going to start reviewing applications as well. I told them that I wanted to make sure that I wasn't out already and they said that no one was out yet. GOOD LUCK TO YOU TOO!! I really hope to hear from them as well. It's hard to be patient! Hope to hear soon!

YAY. I hope it works out for us. I'm nervous. I don't think UTMB is as competitive as the schools in the med center. We will see...

I called UTMB yesterday and was told Leann is no longer with UTMB. That's who I had been talking with for updates. The lady that answered the phone in the nursing office told me that they should be receiving the applications from enrollment services of everyone that applied to the summer 2009 program that qualifies hopefully this week. Then she said it would take them about a week to review the ones they want to send emails to advising of an interview. She thought the end of February beginning of March was appropriate to say you could expect an email if you are selected.

The only healthcare experience I have is volunteering in nursing homes if that qualifies. Once I finish my pathophysiology class I'm going to start voluteering in a hospital. I just can't work full time, be a single parent and do school and volunteer to. It's important that I do well in Patho so I'm giving it all I have.

I had planned to volunteer in a hospital, but when I went in to interview she told me I had to commit for a year. If I do get accepted into UTMB, then I have to move to the other side of Houston. Unfortunately, I cannot volunteer because I'm not in a position that would allow for me to commit for a year. I suppose I could check into other hospitals, but if I do get accepted I would move almost immediately.

Lets see if I can help you girls and guys...

Ive applied got accepted and rejected the offer so i might not know anything about the program but i know the application phase haha..

First of all, I have NO medical experience at all.

I was rejected by UTHSCH also..

I applied with a 3.3gpa with a prev BA in Bio and got into the Bacc2 program.

Applied in May for the Spring of 09 and didnt get a email for interview until Oct 28th for a interview for Nov 7th... I think i got my letter of acceptance after Thanksgiving or even early December (I hope this gives you a somewhat estimate of the app process... keep in mind the hurricane hit though)

Umm I accepted the Bacc2 program at UTHSC-San Antonio instead..

I hope that helps in anyway...

Thank you AznPlayR99 for the info. I have also applied to Fall 2009 UTHSCH program but I think my chances are very slim because I was told when I went to the information session that they look to see that you have taken NET and do not care about the score so I was taking a full load at the time and didn't think I needed to study for it. However, later I was told by someone else that you need a score of at least 70 or above. My GPA is 3.65 for nursing pre-reqs and 4.0 for science but was told that it wasn't likely I would get an interview because of the NET score but to remain hopeful because you never know. I was pretty upset because I've already missed the date to retake the NET. I guess that's why you just have to keep asking the same question to different people and decide for yourself what is correct. I'm hopeful for UTMB and have also applied to the ADN program at HCC as an absolute backup. Good luck at UTSA's nursing program in San Antonio.

wow, that 4.0 GPA in science and 3.65 GPA in pre reqs is awesome! it makes me worry about my chances, but i'm still hopeful. thanks for all the great info guys! this really helps!
