Okay so im applying to uthscsa for the spring and was wondering if anyone knows what gpa they look at and any other helpful ideas to get an interview etc. my prereq gpa is 3.74 but my overall gpa is a 3.44...is that going to hurt my chances? i went in for a transcript review and debbie calculated the wrong gpa for me and i didnt notice until i got home. i hope they dont mess up with my application. eeeek im so nervous i wanna do everything possible to get in!!:D the only other place im applying to is sac but i much rather get my bachelor degree then an associates....

Others have said that only the top 200 are tested and interviewed so we have come far already! Glad that October is flying for you because it seems a little slow for me.

There were no interviews this time around. Do you mean the questionnaire?

Yes. That is what i meant. I stand corrected. :)

Hey rls74, welcome to the board. All of us are highly anticipating that letter, MaoKhan asked the nursing admissions rep and they said around late October we'd be notified. Cali, did you get any info when you went for your TEAS? I forgot to ask anything, but I suppose we currently know all we need to know for now... Hey CE, how has the hospital volunteering been working out? You seeing anything specifically you're gonna want to get into as an RN? MaoKhan, have you gotten any other emails? Cheers...

nothing new from me. I have a feeling it will be like this until letters are sent out.

My volunteering kinda ended when I found out I have mandatory species observations from here til the end of November for microbiology. Wish that had been mentioned during registration...I wouldn't have taken a Friday lab.

Rn76... You were right I didn't mention my teas experience we had about 12 people and no news there. I guess I was a little ambitious with my letter estimate. I saw that last year the letters went out 2.5 weeks after testing which foe us would be as early as next week. Mao please keep us posted of you hear anything else. Sorry if my last post was misleading meant to imply that they soul start in the nearing weeks.

Rant

Anyone feeling kind of apathetic towards school? I'm really starting to dread going to all of my classes. Half my classes I could pass without ever showing up, but attendance is mandatory, a certain nameless TA who runs one of my labs is completely full of himself - he sent an email to us about how much he had to "suffer" by having to watch us "fail" at doing one of the experiments. Several of my professors have accents that make their lectures incomprehensible. 95% of what my philosophy professor says is nonsense and I would love to openly disagree with him more if he didn't cut me off every time I bring up the word "science".

I also just ran into a guy who is already at HSC and he said it's not what he thought it would be and has lost interest, but is going to get his degree anyway.

I feel so little interest in studying for my micro lab right now and felt like this rant was needed

let me share with you guys a little about myself. I'm currently LVN licensed which I recieved through the US Army. In addition to BLS, I have ACLS and an EMT-B license. I've had experience stateside and overseas. Nursing isn't for everyone. To be honest, I think alot of people overglorify it without taking things in perspective or looking at it realistically. Ultimately it comes down to passion and whatever it is that drives you to help, serve, and care for others. To me, those innate qualities can't be taught. If you feel you share these traits, truck ahead, for school is merely a stepping stone.

Honestly, things will probably only seem worse during nursing school. Cyclical, you seem to be on top of things in these threads. I urge you to not merely get by but absorb what you think will be beneficial to your career. Most of us don't understand how much these prereqs really impact our performance, but the fact is nursing school will only pick up where they think we left off and take off running. I will keep you guys posted with whatever I hear, but for the most part, I'm in the same boat as you guys.

so how many students would they take out of the 200?

Really great words of wisdom. I generally have a "get by" mindset in my classes. I have a "put the most minimal effort to get an A" mindset, and unfortunately it has worked extremely well. I have no doubts nursing school will be harder and that my efforts now will be reflected when I get there, but I also believe I'll get by and succeed (hopefully in study study groups with all of you fine people :)).

I think the biggest difference between you and me is that you seem to have a lot more life experience, something that I feel I lack. When I started volunteering, I had a terrible time relating to patients and the other nurses in general. They all have a story for anything and everything. The more I volunteered though, the more my own stories became apparent and the more I enjoyed being there.

I think that the "get by/absorb" argument doesn't apply to me so much in the classroom as it does out of the classroom. Whatever life experiences I absorb between now and Day One - RN Certified will be the most beneficial to me and will be the inevitable judge of whether I'm a good nurse or not.

So cheesy sounding but so true.

In other news, I just got a C on my Philosophy test for disagreeing with my professor's opinion. Apparently there really is only 1 right answer to life's questions. Pretty funny stuff.

From what I hear it is 120 out of the 200, but I try and take these things with a grain of salt. Each semester is so diffrent and even this time around they changed how the "interviewed" us. We are almost half way thorugh October so Good Luck as we approach our fates;)

Cyclical-

I think that there is much to be said for the excitement and anticipation for getting into nursing school and just the admission process is emotional and draining. I am in a similar boat as you where my classes are not super hard or challenging and I feel relaxed about my studies. I was dissapointed in the fact that they weren't more demanding as I thought that would help me through these last few months leading up to hopefully starting the program but Mao is right that we should enjoy these classes now before the really hard work begins.

I don't think that you are lacking life exerpeince yours is just diffrent. Everyone of us, I am sure, has our owns visons and dreams of why we want to get in and though we will be in the same program our journeys will no doubt be unique for all of us. Don't let that persons dissapointment weigh to much into what your exxperience will be cause like I said we all have diffrent expectations. It is great that you are volunteering and getting some exposure. I think you are ahead of the game being confident that you want to grow and find your own stories. Some of my most fun and educating times were when I was volunteering.
