Hi everyone!
I looked and looked on here but I didn't see a thread for people applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Accelerated BSN Summer 2015 program, so I thought I'd start a thread. I just submitted my application (kind of late I know). How's it going for everyone?
How are you guys seeing the textbooks we need?. Is this on blackboard or the student center/self service? I'm so lost already.. When I login into the student center and I click on the courses, all it says is "textbooks will be determined". HELP!!!
You know the email about registration we received, the schedule listings have hyperlinks except on course (socialization). Click on those links and it will show you the syllabus for that course.
Here is the link:
Everything I've read about reading on a computer/tablet/phone says it keeps your brain awake. I have an app on my macbook called f.lux that does pretty much what Original_red described, but I'm not sure if something like that is available for every tablet/phone.Also, in my limited experience with e-textbooks, none of them ever had a feature that allowed for easy flipping back and forth between pages that are in different sections, which I do sometimes while studying.
I actually have a Kindle Paperwhite which is strictly an e-reader, but I've only ever used it for leisure reading.
@Winnieas89 if you click on the individual class names on this page it will take you to a page with course info. Sum15
See, I'm so nervous about e-books because I have all Apple products which do not have that Kindle paper white type feature. But! I didn't know there was an app to convert it to white/yellow light instead of blue. What kind of devices are e-books optimal for? Desktop, laptop, tablets, phone? Any specific brands?
@Barsumian Honestly I'm not sure if there is an optimal device for e-books. Since they are from different companies, I think there might not be a consistent device that they are most often developed for, if that makes sense.
When I have used e-books it was mostly by logging into a website on my laptop. I've only used them for maybe three classes and only because my class required the other online stuff that went along with the e-book subscription.
I'm going to stick to old-fashioned textbooks myself; I have a feeling I'll be able to get away with keeping them at home most of the time since we'll just be in four hour (!!!) lectures, so I'm not too worried about lugging them around.
Yea to be honest, I have a feeling we won't need the text in class because (unlike what the teacher says to do and we actually do in normal college course) we are going to need to do extensive reading BEFORE or on our own time and not have use for the book in class. Not 100% on that, but I think dividing our time between paper and computer will be beneficial. You all know we do all testing in computers and notes for class etc, right?
Yeah, I heard that about tests and notes. We also apparently have an ATI critical thinking test the second day of orientation. Do you know if we receive lecture slides in PowerPoint format? It's nice to record lecture and take notes in PowerPoint so the audio will coincide with the slide. If not, the Audionote app works well too, lol.

Every teacher I'm sure is different, but a current student said that he takes notes on the actual notes section in PP on each slide during class. He said he hasn't taken a hand written note in this program yet.
So, just curious, has anyone heard good things about the program or any of its professors? I haven't talked to many people who are actually in the traditional or accelerated programs but what little I have heard seems to be somewhat negative. An acquaintance whose husband went through the accelerated program a couple of years ago described it as a "hot mess". And I haven't been able to find much about any of the professors online. UTHSCSA was always my first choice since I live in San Antonio and I planned to tough the program out even if they are still working out kinks, but yeah, just wondering, and I don't mean to scare anyone either heh.
