UTHSCSA Accelerated BSN Summer 2015

Published

Hi everyone!

I looked and looked on here but I didn't see a thread for people applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Accelerated BSN Summer 2015 program, so I thought I'd start a thread. I just submitted my application (kind of late I know). How's it going for everyone?

Ha I was just pricing out textbooks as well. I'm considering renting a few vs. buying going off what I'm reading on threads here and at reddit.com/r/nursing. I was also thinking about buying old editions to save more money. It never impacted me negatively when I did that for pre-reqs but I'm more nervous to do that now.

Are you going to buy all of the "recommended" ones?

I don't know whether to buy now or wait til orientation, but you're right, not a lot of time to read ahead if we wait.

I am going to start with required only, if throughout the course I think the recommended would be helpful or that I will actually read them, then j might purchase them during the semester.

At least that is cheaper than I thought, I just wish the teachers would give us more info now. What is reddit?

Yeah I wish we'd start hearing from teachers too, and since we haven't been officially given our reading assignments yet, I'm not sure how urgent it is that we get started on them.

Reddit has a whole bunch of content on a whole bunch of different topics but I just follow the "subreddits" (groups/forums) that are specific to my interests. They have a subreddit called /r/nursing for people who are already nurses and one called /r/studentnurses too.

Has anybody purchase parking? If so, what lot did you request?

When you purchase used books do you still have access to online content/user codes?

I haven't bought a parking pass yet. It still tells me there aren't any available to purchase yet. I think we all automatically start off in Zone 5.

Usually you do not have access to online content with used books.

I highly recommend bigwords.com; it compares prices from different websites including Amazon and you can specify whether you want to rent or buy and if you want new/used/e-books.

I haven't been able to purchase a parking permit either. Not sure which zone to request.

Not often. Most used books either don't include the cd or login in info for online content. If that's the case and we need that, there are two options. Purchase the book used and separately purchase the online context access. Other option is to purchase the book and access new. Id check both for which is cheaper. What do we have that requires access?

I don't know if we have anything that requires the online content, just saw a lot of the books have that note on the front about having access to additional online content. Saw that some of the ebooks cost just as much as the new textbook. :(

Does anyone have experience with ebooks as textbooks? Good? Bad? Would be nice to lighten the load some.

Only problem I think of with e-books is the excessive time spent staring at a lite screen; it really starts to affect my eyes and causes headaches for me personally. I also prefer the physical book for highlighting and notes.

Downside to not using e-books...I keep a box in my car to hold all the textbooks I need 😩🔫

I have friends that are profs that do extensive reading on computer screens. They assure me it takes some getting used to but then it's great. They also told me about an app that decreases the blue light throughout the day so by the end of the day it's all yellow light emitting from your screen. The blue light is harsher on your eyes and awakens your brain so it's harder to get to sleep. I too like paper books but would rather not haul around a bunch of weight.

How are you guys seeing the textbooks we need?. Is this on blackboard or the student center/self service? I'm so lost already.. When I login into the student center and I click on the courses, all it says is "textbooks will be determined". HELP!!!
