This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)
I'm applying with the following stats:
Pre-req GPA: 3.21
Science GPA: 3.66
Overall GPA: 2.81
I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)
Good luck to everyone!!
@ katybusymom, I am in the same boat that you are. I started college over 20 years ago and didn't do so hot in some of my older classes. I also went through a divorce and just life in general happened, I'm feeling somewhat frustrated because of all the high GPA's! I had VERY random classes that were chosen as my electives! I wonder how in the world I can compete with all these super high GPA's it's very hard to get it raised when it's lower! I'm even contemplating a fresh start, but I don't really want to retake some of those classes! I also wonder how they would look at a fresh start! UGH!!! This is frustrating! I have a great HESI score and I've worked in healthcare, I just wish I could tell them all of this!! Still hoping for the best, but being a realist too!!
Hi everyone!
I hope you're all starting to hear lots of good news! I have been AWOL for a while because things got crazy and all of a sudden I had 5 tests in 3 weeks! I haven't read any of the previous posts up to this point, so apologies if this is redundant, but I just wanted to offer a quick piece of advice: create a FB group as soon as you can. It's significantly easier to communicate, you can organize permanent "Docs" for reoccurring topics, and there will be tons of students who aren't on AN who will eventually be looking for a group for your class. After you create your group, send me a link via a private AN message (you'll get in trouble if you post the direct link on the thread) and I'll inform the current students. There are tons of us who are happy to share everything we know about financial aid, books, uniforms, registration, housing, transportation, etc.
You may want to consider naming your group "UTHSC SON Class of May 2013" - that's the format used by the previous 3 classes, and it will make it easier for current students to find your group.
Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted, and best wishes to everyone still waiting to find out! :)
@ alm625 & katybusymom, same here! Thought about doing fresh start but was hoping I wouldn't have to. Apparently they do take older stuff into account...wish I could have had the chance to explain it all in an interview. My overall HESI was a 94. 820 CT. Science GPA: 3.75 PreReq: 3.67 Overall: 3.25 Since I've been back to school full time in the last 18 months, I have a 4.0 and in Phi Theta Kappa. Oh Well! Will try again for the Fall. Going to retake a couple of classes during the winter mini mester to try and boost my prereq GPA some more before reapplying for Fall.
P.S. We had grilled cheese for dinner! LOL!
@ rocket surgery, thanks for your help and advice! Any idea what their feelings opinions, etc. are on fresh starts? I am contemplating this option to boost my overall GPA and to lose the random electives they chose for me. I am not sure how many classes I will have to retake, but it might be worth it in the long run!
@spring hopeful, I was thinking about taking a few older pre-req's over again myself, but I'm really torn as to what to do. I only have so much time........If I spend my time retaking history/govt/etc. over Christmas break, then I won't be able to graduate from UTA in May, but it would boost my pre-req gpa. But, if I take an easy elective and one hard class over the break, it would count towards my degree (BS in God knows what?), but wouldn't help my pre-req gpa. I would take the remaining hours needed to finish my degree in the spring.
So, what's more important.......the degree or the gpa?
My plan B, C and D is to graduate from UTA in May, then apply to EVERY nursing school in and around Houston for the fall. I couldn't apply to UTMB or TWU this time around because my pre-req sequencing was out of order. I needed nutrition, lifespan and stats to apply, which I didn't have, but I do have now.
I'm all ears to whatever advice any of you have to offer. Help:)
Amymit, I was a Fresh Start applicant. My (not so successful) 1st attempt at college was 1997-2001. Mostly C's and a few D's. Around 2003 I got my you-know-what in gear, finished my degree in February 2004 with mostly A's, and was able to raise my GPA from a 1.9 to a 3.0. I chose to apply to UTHSC under the Fresh Start program and retake several classes in addition to the prereqs I needed but hadn't yet taken (mostly the sciences- my 1st degree was in Finance.) Since I was applying for the Fall 2011 semester, that meant that everything prior to Fall 2001 was no longer counted. It was totally worth it. I had a 4.0 GPA for all my prereqs, except for 2 Bs from 2004 that I decided weren't worth the effort.
So Fresh Start applicants are definitely not at a disadvantage. Assuming you are equally qualified, you will not be denied just because you chose the Fresh Start program. And if you can significantly raise your GPA, it's definitely worth considering. I absolutely would not have gotten accepted to UTHSC if I had not used the Fresh Start program.
I am in the same boat as many of you. I did not make such good grades when I started college 11 years ago. Married, kids, divorced, married, kids. When I finally decided what I wanted to do and had the chance to put everything that I had into it, I gave it my all and made A's. But, my overall is a 2.75 and I am sure that does not even compete with most of these. My last name starts with an A, so I have been crying for 2 days hoping that every time I hit the refresh button that something will change. My poor husband and kids...they had cereal for dinner. lol. I guess there is still hope until the denial letters come. I am so happy for everyone that has been accepted though! You all deserve it! I see some of you talking about a fresh start. What does that mean??

Everyone on this forum has worked really hard. No one hear has poor gpas or hesi scores, so if you haven't heard anything yet, then it isn't over til it's over! I felt the same way until I got my changes. Good luck to all of you! Have some faith!
