UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

I truly think that they only got through the "S" last names today...and I'm sure even that was daunting. I grew up with a "C" last name and I never realized how popular "S" was for last names until now! My husband informed me yesterday (as I was freaking out about not having my holds change) that "S" last names are plentiful. I haven't seen anyone on this forum beyond "S" receive an acceptance (except for one "U" who received one yesterday--which just proves the point that UT isn't really going in perfect alphabetical order.) Keep the hope alive! Everyone on this forum has managed to keep me somewhat sane during this insanity and everyone on here more than deserves and acceptance!

Ok, tell me more about this fresh start thing........I thought it only worked for completely starting over, like from zero. I've taken 58hrs in the past 18 months and have a 3.73 GPA with those classes. It's the other really really old 48hrs that are killing my GPA.

@ goingnuts, fresh start is a law in Texas which you can choose to enact when applying to a school, where any courses you took that are 10 years old or more cannot be considered when reviewing your transcripts. I think you still have to submit all transcripts, but they can't use them. But this will also remove any good grades that are older than 10 years as well. Hence the problem for many of us considering the option...we would have to retake some courses that would get wiped away.

Additionally with Fresh Start- if you're *accepted* to a BSN program after applying as a Fresh Start candidate, any Graduate (Master's/PhD) program you apply to will also count only your coursework taken within the last 10 years. So if you're thinking about getting an advanced degree, the Fresh Start program is definitely worth it.

And like Spring said, you still have to submit ALL you transcripts to the Admissions office, but you submit a form stating what semesters to exclude from the GPA calculation.

OK I feel so much better after reading everyone's story.

Here's mine... went to college, dad had stroke, I got depressed and made bad grades, got in car wreck and broke my neck, never officially withdrew from that next semester so I have F's on my record, started supporting myself because my mom had tow younger kids to care for, had a baby and had to support a little one, now I'm married with more kids.

I've been going to school for the last 18 months taking every semester and mini-mester offered. I've made A's on everything since then. I'm older, committed to this process, and convinced I will be a great nurse!

I've never heard of fresh start but I think that could be my saving grace! I definitely plan on getting my masters so I need to look into that pronto!

We all have our stories and I'm sure we were all hoping to share a little bit of them in an interview.

That chance is gone now. But UTHSC has not heard the last of me!!!! I may not start this coming January but I fully plan on being there in September!

WHOSE WITH ME!!!!!?????

Ok, so according to fresh start, I would only need to take 15hrs of pre-req's over!!! That would boost my GPA tremendously and get rid of my "bad" semester at college over twenty years ago!!

Now the overachiever type A personality in me is trying to figure out a way that I can do BOTH, lol........graduate in May and apply to nursing school for the fall.

Here's the official info on Fresh Start: http://www.collegefortexans.com/index.cfm?objectid=6D10C9BD-DD24-153F-90B91DA6C20D1C97

You have to let the school know you're applying under Fresh Start before the application deadline for your semester. The official "procedure" varies for each school, so call the registrar and ask what you need to submit in order to be considered a Fresh Start applicant. If you'll be retaking a significant number of classes, you might want to go ahead and schedule a meeting with an academic adviser to make sure you are only retaking what you really need, based on the classes that will be excluded (which depends on the semester you'll be applying for).

Why can't you take classes in the Spring & Summer and graduate in August?

Hi everyone!

I hope you're all starting to hear lots of good news! I have been AWOL for a while because things got crazy and all of a sudden I had 5 tests in 3 weeks! I haven't read any of the previous posts up to this point, so apologies if this is redundant, but I just wanted to offer a quick piece of advice: create a FB group as soon as you can. It's significantly easier to communicate, you can organize permanent "Docs" for reoccurring topics, and there will be tons of students who aren't on AN who will eventually be looking for a group for your class. After you create your group, send me a link via a private AN message (you'll get in trouble if you post the direct link on the thread) and I'll inform the current students. There are tons of us who are happy to share everything we know about financial aid, books, uniforms, registration, housing, transportation, etc.

You may want to consider naming your group "UTHSC SON Class of May 2013" - that's the format used by the previous 3 classes, and it will make it easier for current students to find your group.

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted, and best wishes to everyone still waiting to find out! :)

Our facebook group is called "UTHSC SON spring 2012" :)

@amby: because we are still taking pre reqs and it is provisional on us passing our final classes.

HEY!! Is this the same John that took Medical Micro Pro. Davis last Spring semester 2011? If so we were in his class together.

I meant Jon.

Just so y'all know, I took rocket's advice and changed the FB group name because it made sense. It's now UTHSC SON Class of May 2013. :)

It's the same group, so any of you who already found it are still in it. All you who haven't joined yet, do it! Peer pressure! :p
