Hello friends!

I'm creating this as a communication board for new students/applicants to talk on about:

  • Current GPA -- science & overall
  • Requirements needed to apply
  • HESI test requirements
  • Applications -- status or general info
  • Acceptance!

A quick intro-- My name is Maira and I've followed previous threads on here and I love how much information you can get from it! (I followed and read ALL of UTHSC Nursing Spring 2016)

I'm applying at UThealth for the nursing pacesetter program for Spring 2017. The application is due by Aug. 15 and I haven't submitted it yet because I haven't taken the HESI! I'm getting anxious about taking it, have any of y'all taken yours yet?!

Also, I've been meaning to stop by the school and see if my pre-reqs meet their requirements. I'm a bit confused on whether they will average 2 scores of the same class or not. For instance, a long time ago I took a English course and got a F (I was careless and young) and now I retook it and got a A. Another thing that I've been wondering about is what exactly the 5 hours of "electives" are-- will they accept a math class for it?

Well I look forward to meeting all of you!!!! Good luck!!!! :inlove:

Right! You said it, "volunteer work." But I'm talking about medical experience such as a job!

volunteering you don't get enough medical experience! You might get an idea of how things work in the medical field, but that's too far from experience.

Never recall seeing work experience:sorry:

Yeah, there's a page full of things they consider besides GPA & HESI, but those are supposedly the main determining factors. There's strong speculation that it's a lottery system lol, but we don't know how they go about picking. They could take into account so many different things (class retakes, HESI retakes, where the prereqs were take, whether you were a full time student, if you were working) The list goes on...

I don't think they look at volunteer work, but who knows.

Failure keeps people humble!

No, work experience is not listed, but there was a place for it on the application.

It may be there so they can see if the person was working as they completed their pre-req's. This is what is on their website:

  • Motivation, with consideration given to success in overcoming adverse economic or educational conditions; employment history occurring simultaneously with undergraduate academic preparation; participation in activities requiring time management skills; constantly improving undergraduate record; veteran status, and experience in health-related activities;

I don't have medical experience, but I have worked full time while taking my pre-req's, I also have a husband and children....talk about multi-tasking!

I have worked at my current employer for 26 years....that kind of loyalty should count for something. :)

Is proven that people cannot multi-task.

brains can only process one thing at a time! We might be able to do many things in a short period of time, but multi-tasking is not possible in humans!

Ohhh okay. You're right Tesstex, seems like they would consider it if there was a place for it on the app. Why else would it be on there? I guess we'll be finding out in a few months!

Im so sad because I never saw it!!! :(

It's okay... I applied for fall 2016, and I don't remember putting anything in that section...and one of my friends did not put anything down either. We both got accepted! GPA and hesi score are not the only thing they look at. Some ppl with good gpa and high hesi were rejected.

I read through all the previous threads. Here's what I found: They care about critical thinking scores..and they look at all the classes you have taken not just the required courses, this way they see if you can handle the nursing course load.

What was your critical thinking score?

What was your critical thinking score?

My critical thinking was 850

This makes me feel a little better about my chances because my critical thinking score was 890. In some of the sections it was 954. I called and verified with the school that everything was set to go and my application is definitely completed, so now the waiting games begin! Good luck to everyone!

Thank you all! Just contacted the school and they also said the work experience is complementary and doesn't affect your chances of getting admitted or not. Wish you all the best!!! Now let's wait for those letters. Hope to meet you all next year. :nurse: Dont lose hope, if it's meant to be, it's meant to be.

ps. My friend who is a senior at UTHealth said she believes they look at critical thinking, how many times you have retaken a class/classes, how many classes you have taken a semester, how many times you have taken the HESI, and check your anatomy score on HESI.
