UT houston spring 2010 hopefuls

Published

hi there, I'm a spring 2010 UT houston hopefull, I'm trying to see who else is embarking on this journey so we can support each other. I really enjoyed tracking the Fall 2009 class, and I hope we can do the same. I still have a few classes to take. I am currently taking chemistry. As of now my science GPA is 3.33, and overall gpa is 3.61. I am taking the net in May.

Can't wait to hear from others.

I wasnt able to go, but could you please share some of the information they told you?

Emag I'm applying to UTMB to.

It was in a mostly question-answer format, although they started with a basic presentation covering the basic information about applying and the application-interview process. They also had two professors come in and talk about the traditional and accelerated program, which was also in Q&A format.

Most of the information (particularly the admissions portion) can be found on the website if you take the time to look and read it. New information for me included the dates interview letters will be sent out (between mid-September and late October) and the date acceptance letters will be posted (November 15th). There is no special consideration given to those who have more than the required 40 hours of pre-reqs. That is to say, if I have 58 and you have 43 at the deadline, we both get equal consideration. Also, no one's application is considered until after the September 1 deadline, so if you turn it in on the 31st of August you are still doing just as good as someone who turned theirs in three months ago. If you get in and still have courses to complete, they must be completed before the beginning of the program date and you must maintain a C or better in them.

Competitive scores are 3.25 overall GPA, 3.25 science GPA, 80 on the NET (that is a combination of your reading, math, and composite score). GPA counts 33% in the admission process, NET scores count 33% and the interview counts 33%. They did not give us any information on the interview process.

1400 people applied to the traditional program last year, 100 were accepted. 400 applied to the accelerated program and 60 were accepted. Just to give you an idea of the high degree of competitiveness here.

They discussed how intense the program is (either accelerated or traditional) and let me tell you, it is intense. Be prepared to have no outside life the whole time you are immersed in the program. In the traditional program class times are set, you are not able to choose different class times as you would be able to at a regular school. The accelerated program is almost completely online, except you must report to the school for skills labs and testing. Clinical hours vary. They try to accomodate your living situation and the area you live in, but spaces are limited and you go where you are told. There are some instances of being able to work out your own clinical times in conjunction with a hospital close to you, but these are few and far between. If you fail two classes, you are dropped from the program.

These are just things that jump out in my memory. I will be glad to answer any questions if you can think of something you want to know that they may have covered.

Thanks for the heads up!

No problem, hope it helped!

I am pretty nervous although looking at the Fall 09 applicant blog on here I see that almost everyone on there got in with the exception of 2 people who scored in the 60's for the reading section on the NET. All the people who got interviews passed the NET with decent scores and had GPA's over a 3.5 in all 3 GPA catagories according to their UT Link Profile. There are over 400 postings to that blog and I have read every single one. The trend tends to be that if you dont bomb the NET and your grades are good you will more than likely get an interview. I also read that once the interview happens if they have too many qualified people and limited slots they go back through your grade history for records of "c" "f" or "w" in classes and that can be a factor. I would reccomend reading this blog as these people just went through what we are about to go through. It shows their journey from beginning to end and was very insightful. Best of luck to everyone.

Hi Emag I read the whole entire thread as well, I also came to the same conclusion. My Gpas are great now I just need to do good on the net!

Does anyone know if you can take the NET more than once? I was under the impression you had one shot and if you do poorly you have to wait another year. I havent taken it yet but was asking just in case. If you are aloud to take it more than once do they average the 2 scores or what? Please clarify. Thanks

Emag -

At the information session yesterday they told me you can take the NET as many times as you want and they will take the MOST RECENT score. In other words, if you take it this week and score 85 and then next week and score 75, they will take the 75.

I've taken it twice now, approximately 3 months apart. No problems yet! lol

What courses are included in calculating the science GPA for UT Houston? AP 1&2, Chem, and Microbio?

Only the pre-requisite sciences are included. Then for overall GPA they calculate the pther pre-requisite course and for your electives they choose the highest grades of your qualifiying courses.

The pre-req science courses that are listed on the UT website count for the science GPA. Your Nursing pre-req GPA are all the other courses required for nursing program. The regular GPA is based on everything you have taken that isnt needed for nursing school i.e Weight Lifting.
