good luck !!
I had read the article earlier this week and was surprised to see hospitals in there.I go to Baylor Healthcare almost weekly, and check for jobs listing, I still see lots in my area in nursing.
Graduate Nurses, Float pool Nurses, RN's and other jobs in the Baylor Sytem.
I actually think the Retrogression will work in a "positive way" for my wife in finding a job.
Has she actually gone to inquire there about a position? Please do that and then come back and let us know what they say. These postings are geared towards those that have graduated in the US and not out of the country and do not have work experience or any type of experience in the US.
Again, please let me know the types of responses that she actually gets when she starts the application process.
Per Diem and Float Pool both require nursing experience, usually two years worth before one should even be considered for a position like this. You can be placed on any type of unit to fill in holes in the schedule.
And as mentioned above, the new grad programs are usually only less than 20 in the group and they usually get more than 200 applications for this training as well.
I've been watching and studying Barack for almost everyday and I'm sure he will fix on it when the time is right. Health care is one of his top priority and with that in mind I'm sure he can change the length for retrogression too.
Barack Obama was elected by the American people to look after American interests....I have trouble believing that retrogression and hiring foreign nurses when there are US educated citizens looking for work have any priority.
The push by Obama is actually for Americans to be working first, not bringing in foreign nurses when there is not a shortage in many locales.Healthcare repair has nothing at all to do with bringing over foreign nurses to the US at this time, if you truly understand what is happening right now as well as the fact that a facility must prove that they have been unable to hire an American for the job. Quite hard to do at this point in time.
Thank you, Suzanne.

Most of the positions I see posted require lots of experience. Also Baylor cites you need to be a graduate of an accredited nursing program. It is also a magnet hospital which limits how many foreign graduates they can employ in nursing.
You have posted your wife wants to work a year and then look for the best job or go on to be a lawyer, NP , CRNA, or doctor. That is not the type of candidate they are looking for, They are looking for a committed nurse.
I agree with retrogression your wife will not be competing with other IENs but finding a position won't be as easy as you think.
Every day on the news more people are being laid off. No place is immune to this and it is the worst is has been in recorded US history.
Best of luck to your wife and happy job hunting after she passes the NCLEX

Here's our plan.
She takes NCLEX end of Febuary, and hopefully she will pass. Assuming she passes I have asked her to wait until July before looking for work.
We plan on going back to Philippines around June and spend about a month there, and springtime in Texas is great and I spend a lot of time at the lake, So I don't want her work schedule to get in our way.
I want her to enjoy her free time before having to join the workforce. Right now getting the RN is priority, not working.
Once the job search begins I will keep ya'll updated.
First of all professionally applying for a position when you have been out of school awhile makes a nurse look less then desirable.
July all the new graduate positions will be filled. I am glad she doesn't have to work and will be able to enjoy spring and traveling. I guess her career isn't that important and there isn't a financial need, glad that she has the smarts not to take a position away when she doesn't need to work and other people need to pay rent and feed themselves.
Hope she finds her dream.

Workers receiving unemployment at 25-year high
Share of workers claiming unemployment benefits reaches 25-year high as layoffs spread
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Week by week, the numbers that measure the economy get worse, heading toward uncharted territory.
The Labor Department released figures Thursday showing that the percentage of the workforce receiving unemployment benefits reached a 25-year high in mid-January. The raw numbers were the highest since the government started keeping records in 1967, although the workforce was much smaller then....
But the jobless numbers were the worst -- with more layoffs on the way...
The figures underscored how hard it is for laid-off workers to leave the unemployment rolls by finding a new job amid the deepening recession....
More job cuts were announced Thursday. Cessna Aircraft Co., part of the Providence, R.I.-based conglomerate Textron Inc., said it plans to lay off 2,000 workers, on top of 2,600 cuts it announced earlier this month. Ford Motor Co. said its credit arm would cut 20 percent of its work force, or 1,200 jobs. Eastman Kodak Co. said it's cutting 3,500 to 4,500 jobs, or 14 to 18 percent of its work force. Black & Decker Corp. and Bon-Ton Stores Inc. also announced layoffs...
Starbucks Corp., Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, Target Co., Boeing Co., Pfizer Inc., Home Depot Inc. and others have announced tens of thousands of job cuts this week alone, bringing layoffs announced in January to about 130,000, according to a tally by The Associated Press....
I think the US has enough on it's plate just trying to take care of US citizens that need jobs without worrying about employing the rest of the free world.

What exactly is YOUR area in nursing?

As I've stated before, you must be current in nursing in order not to be considered "outdated"...She will be considered "outdated"...and it sounds to me as if she doesn't have any nursing experience...the longer she waits to find the job the chances of obtaining one will be very slim....good luck
Let's not personally attack others here.
And all of you are correct, it will be more than a year since she graduated from her program, so that is going to make it harder to get hired here as well now.
The issue here is that the economy is quite bad and getting worse on a daily basis. Any worse and it will actually be considered a depression and not a recession. This just has actually added on years to those that are waiting to come to the US, most definitely not going to speed things up.
And health care is something that is going to be the focus of the new president, but not in the ways that you may think. It has nothing to do with bringing foreign staff over, actually it is not even mentioned. But getting health insurance coverage for more people and making sure that all children are covered, etc.

Nurses are only coming to the US that have been petitioned by a hospital or have a visa thru a spouse. As a new grad without any experience or their training done in the US it is going to be most difficult to get hired as I am sure that your wife is seeing right now.
And most are not going to be able to work when they arrive as well. And not one of these facilities is in your locale so not sure how it is beneficial to the nurses that are here. Best bet is always to check the website for the facility. Same way that you may see jobs posted on Monster.com and some other sites, but they are not always up to date.
And last one hired is also the first to be let go if they have to have lay-offs.
