Hello everyone, I just wanted to start this thread for anyone interesting or planning on applying to UM for spring 2015. I am finishing up the pre-requisites I need...doing micro class and lab. So far those are the only things I know I have to take. I'm extremely nervous, mainly because of the waiting game to see if I'm accepted or not.
I had to take over class, so I am not too happy about that either, so that also makes me a little down.
Also when I called the other day, someone said they are changing the application process, did anyone else hear that information?
Are you guys finish with all your pre-requisites?
Do you know how much repeating a class puts you in the hole for not getting accepted?
Thanks btab3,
How many people were in your class and how is the housing situation down there? I hear it is expensive but I am wondering about some of the good areas that might be slightly cheaper outside of miami that are within close proximity to the school (if any).
Thanks for your advice!
I was not ready for the floor. I can't speak for everyone that graduated but I did not feel well enough prepared. Could be that I was hired straight into the ER and it was a bit learning curve. Or could be that I did not work hard at all in school. My GPA was. 3.3 upon completion. I would suggest looking for a residency or internship program out of school. It is a really good transition. As for NP programs right after I have friends who are doing that but I think it would be wiser to work for a while build up experience and confidence as a nurse before entering a program. Good luck again!
Thanks for sharing! What was your school schedule like?
I think we started with around 80. First week like 7 dropped. Then people that couldn't make it started to drop each semester. I don't quite remember the number that graduated. Schedule varies on the semester. summer is hardest because shortest time for most classes.
No idea about the room and board. Was married with a kid and lived in miami beach.

Hey Newhartc,
I'm from Miami and my brother went to UM so I can speak to my experiences helping him look for a place to live. There are housing complexes available that are filled with students that are within walking distance of the campus. Unfortunately, Coral Gables itself not a cheap area. Roommates definitely help with the rent and a lot of people try to get at least one roommate to keep things affordable. Coconut Grove and Brickell are great neighborhoods and are popular with students but you would definitely want a roommate (or two) to help with rent. There are some more affordable neighborhoods but you would have to get out of South Miami (head west or north) and you would absolutely need a car to get around. Plus you have to factor in commuting times which can be very difficult. Traffic is terrible. Broward county is cheaper but the commute is ridiculous at peak times. Getting a real estate agent can help you find an apartment if you're totally lost.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much. I'll certainly have to look into all the possibilities and from what I gather getting a roommate or two is the best course of action. I'll have my car down there so I wouldn't mind a commute as long as its not too far. Will be a very different lifestyle as I am from PA with harsh winters and lots of snow! Any ideas on what we can expect to pay for a decent 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom within close proximity to coral gables? Appreciate your help!
Coral Gables has a lot of different options for what you would be interested in. Here is a link to all of the different complexes that students stay at with prices. Btw, my brother lived in the Sunset Club Apartments for a little while. Those are really close to campus.
