Unit Manager Demands I Cut My Hair

Nurses Relations

Published

So I just started at this ICU floor. Been here for around 6months. My hair hasn't changed the whole time I've been here. I regularly go to the barbershop, shower, take care of myself...always look presentable. Manager has been dropping hints to get a haircut the past couple weeks. I thought she was just joking. Then she pulls me into her office yesterday and tells me how disappointed she is in me for not taking her requests seriously. What do I do? Shave my head? I don't want to lose my job. Is this something I can get fired for?

Any advice would be extremely appreciated!

Thanks,

Please don't shave your locs, those are really hard to grow out and maintain. If you love them, keep them. Seriously, just tie them back or yeah, wear a men's surgical cap if you have to. It's your HAIR, and it's part of who you are. It makes me sad to think you'd change such a large part of yourself just because some people on your unit are ignorant. If you are following the dress code, you don't need to change. Sorry, natural hair is kind of a soap box issue for me. Haha.

If you're losing bits of them I'd say go for the surgical cap.

Well, they hired you. From a charge point of view, I wouldn't have let you on the floor without tightening it up. Tie it back or hair net. All employees have to tie their hair back, including women. The RN field is professional, no one likes to look up and see all that hair over them; especially during wound care. Believe me, your hair is falling when you don't know it. Just vacuum or sweep your place...see hair?

I'm surprised they let you keep the beard. That stuff falls out all the time...if that's your pic. We touch our face thousands of times a day, and with hair on the face...just sayin; don't be surprised if that's next.

Just wear them tied back, no need for a fade. Dreads are hard grow. Be proud of your hair.

Jesus not the 60s-70s again! But you may be a protected class if eveyone is not required to cut their hair likewise. But you've probaly signed an arbitratiin agreement so do what the beeotch says or heave-ho. Besides mental illness is hardly ever cured nor does rationality prevail in many nursing situations.

I wouldn't think that hair style would ever be able to be argued as a protected class.

I did it! Kept some on top but I really like how the fade turned out. Hope they don't think it too fancy. Also got rid of my facial hair. I hope people like it. I sure do!

So is your profile picture your actual hair? Dreadlocks can look cool but if I am not mistaken they are held together by grease and dirt and the hair's natural oils? They may not be sanitary.

This is just the beginning .... what do you think she is going to want to change next ? Your skin color?

These managers change all the time..didn't she/or he hire you with your hair? I'd find out what the issue is exactly before I just bow down to some manager.

No, they can be washed. If properly maintained, they're not dirt/grease.

The new cut looks nice, very sharp! :)

This is nice. I think the problem isn't about your hair, they are just picking at you, due to the fact they can't find anything wrong with your work. Stay strong and don't make anymore changes.
