Hi all,

I am a nurse (LVN) in California for almost 10 years and now I am unable to endorse my license over here in Washington state and probably most of the states since I have not finished any nursing program, well I actually almost did but due to difficult pregnancy I stopped right before graduating. So I took the NCLEX challenged the boards passed and worked for 10 years. Now I am over here in Washington state and the BON over here denied my endorsement and told me to retake the entire year of LPN and get my diploma:( so I was so shocked and devastated!!!! Does anybody know of any loopholes of how I am going to be able to get this California license endorsed without having to do nursing school all over again? Anyone knows anything about endorsing license at Oregon?Do you need to finish school and get a diploma for your LPN? HELP???!!!!!

Nope. The method 3 LVN license is only valid in CA (and this is listed on the BVNPT website) and not eligible for endorsement to other states

You must graduate from a school of practical nursing ti be licensed in most states. CA is somewhat unique in the challenge option.

Please note that achieving licensure via the equivalency method may limit the licensee's ability to be hired as a licensed vocational nurse or psychiatric technician. No other state accepts licensees who have been licensed via this method. In addition to licensure, some health care facilities within California require that their potential employees be graduates of approved nursing or psychiatric technician programs. Such facilities will not hire licensees who have achieved licensure via the equivalency method.

I'm sorry it's not what you'd like to hear. You can't work in WA with an OR LPN license. OR also requires you to have graduated from practical nursing school.

Another question, in regards to the NCLEX, if you took it and got your license, like in my case do I still have to retake it? I mean once you passed the NCLEX you do not need to retake it correct?

Unfortunately, there are no loopholes. In the eyes of WA BON, you do not meet the required educational elements to endorse your current license for one in your new state.

CA allowed you to sit for NCLEX-PN in spite of not graduating, but that came with a caveat: your license is only good in CA. Leave the state, and you have to start over.

Sorry.

If you never graduated and it's been 10 years since you took the NCLEX-PN it would be up to the state board of nursing if you would need to retake the exam after earning a diploma

Once you pass it, you don't need to keep retaking it.

The BON tells you how to endorse and as others mentioned - the CA option is very unique.

Since LPN is only one year community college level time will fly by if you chose to go back to school.

Check out some community colleges for inexpensive options.

I am originally from Washington and I have filed for reciprocity of my license in Maine and Oregon. It took a little paperwork, and about $150-200 and I had my Maine license in 2 weeks. Oregon was a whole other story...it took paperwork, having my nursing school transcripts sent to the OR BON, proving I have worked something like 900 hours in the last 5 years, fingerprints, background check and finally about 45 days later i finally received my OR license. So it really depends on the state, because in Maine they didn't need any of that, of course I had to give my WA license number but really besides money not much else. Good luck to you.

you graduated from a nursing program so you are eligible for licenses in other states. the OP didn't graduate from any nursing program and has only been allowed to take the nclex and work as an LPN because she's in California, which allows this screwy way to get a license. she won't be eligible to work in any other state in the country until she passes a recognized nursing program.

if you can afford it, i would simply do the ADN.

OP has an entirely different issue. He/she has a license that is valid only in CA because he/she did not finish nursing school and simply took the NCLEX.

Op challenged LVN without graduating hence the license only valid in CA. Every other state requires a diploma.
