OK, so the rules have changed, and CPD is no longer enough.
I'm wondering about how to achieve the "reflective discussion" part when there are no UK registered nurses where I work.
So, all expat Brits, please let me know how you plan to maintain your NMC registration. Is anyone agreeable to contacting me, with a view to maybe planning an email/Skype discussion that we both can document?
I'm in Chicago btw, so if there are any other UK nurses here, we can meet in Panera instead : )

I've actually benefited greatly from reflective discussions from a nurse in a completely different speciality both for my revalidation and to support others to revalidate.
In fact one of my reflections was around this and the commonality in two very different specialities and how professional nursing and our code can weave its way through every action and intervention.
Update from the NMC regarding changes to the practical CE requirements for revalidation.

They still require 20 hours of the 35 hour total to be "participatory", but the definition has changed to simply be a professional setting that requires interaction.
It can be a webinar, a facebook live event, or a forum discussion.
And the reflective discussion will now be virtual, using zoom or whatever works for you!
I think most of us overseas were zooming or skyping already, but the 20 hours is the new part for us.
Would anyone here be interested in a "forum discussion" on this site about how our work has been impacted by covid?
Topics such as the use of PPE, and its impact on communication, the absence of relatives in end-of-life situations, adapting skills such as intubation and CPR to stay safe . . . . . . . . ?
It would be a separate thread to this one, and we would need to keep it professional, ie, no rants about lack of PPE!
Thoughts please!

I'd be up for that Skylark
Hi all,
I've been thinking seriously if I should let my NMC registration to lapse. The hassle of trying to revalidate of which mine is due in two months is second to none. Three years ago Tracey from here helped me. Everyone including my partner is advising me to let it lapse. I contacted NMC and according to them I have to send proof of practising in order to be re-registered . If I may ask why do u all want to retain your registration instead of reregistering anytime you need it? Please let me know so that I can make a final decision.

I guess it depends on your situation, but reregistering is a huge problem, far worse than just renewing!
I personally cannot think of anyone who has done it, the process is just too daunting.
Many of us have family back home, and I think that probably the main reason, having a current registration would allow us to return easily.
If I had to return expectedly to care for a relative, the last thing I would want to do is a BTP course, I would just want to sign back onto the last bank I worked for and get started!
I was going to reply but Skylark beat me to it. I agree with what they have written.
It seems to be much harder to re-apply for registration than to just re-validate.
However, only you know your circumstances and if you can honestly say completely and wholeheartedly that you will never use your registration again then let it lapse but we never know what is ahead of us. If you have re-validated once then you know what to do so it should be easier this time.
I let mine lapse because I was retired and had no reason (pre covid) to return.
Good luck with your decision whichever way you decide.
I am in a similar position that I've been registered for almost 10 years although I've never practised in the UK. It's annoying to pay the NMC hundreds of pounds for a registration that I may never use, but there's always a small chance that DH and I would live in the UK (he is a Brit, I'm an American). And thus it simply makes sense to have something that would make me automatically employable. If I became a millionaire, I might consider giving it up then as I wouldn't need the financial security from a job then.
Plus like others have said, it could be very hard if not impossible to get re-registered because they can change the requirements at any time. It's not that difficult to get people to do the re-validation if you ask over the internet. Most of us ask each other on here and it's gone over well; I did mine with a gal from Australia.
It’s a toughie - agree it’s a hassle but I hear rejoining the register is ver difficult and expensive!
I live in Australia but my parents live in the uk still. Guess I never know if I will have to go back.
If you are struggling to find someone to do the reflective part with happy to help out.
good luck with your decision

Yes, you can either zoom or meet with a former colleague who is still working, or find one of us here who can do it.
You both need access to a printer and scanner, as the person you meet with will need to sign the form and mail it to you.
If its not urgent, I can do it in the new year, I am on central time, and my regular day off is Wednesday.
The discussion will center on the 5 reflective accounts, so be sure to send them ahead of time, so the other nurse can prepare for the discussion, and have questions ready if they choose to
