uk nurses who have come to the usa

Published

I am in the usvi, and have been here nearly a year, maybe all the nurses who have posted their news about immigration, can now post about the differences in the us hospitals. I dont think that american doctors and nurses fully understand where we come from, and the working environment of the nhs, its only when we get here that we can understand the differences. I am sure that stateside hospitals are different even from here. and that they also vary from state to state, but maybe nurses who are waiting to come will be able to pick up some tips and know more than us what to expect.

christine....from wales to scotland to united states virgin islands, and then to the states, in january.

we let ogp book our flights, we just gave them my credit card details and we paid for hubbys flight, and it was expensive. only because of where we were flying to.

when we left st croix, we bought returns as the us wouldnt let us buy singles and then we contacted the airline and have money in the system that we can use for another flight with them. as we cancelled the return flights.

 Got our x-rays back with visas which didn't expect. Told we may be asked to show them at immigration! Anybody out there had to show theirs? By the way which desk to we go to: Resident aliens?:chuckle

Ok I recommend when buying your printer when you come over buy one with a fax machine inside it because you will fax more than you would in the UK, especially if you come with OGP they will ask you to fax a lot of documents in the begining and it will pay for itself. I found faxing to be very expensive in the postal places. You seem to fax more over here.

When we moved to Washington State 11 years ago, we flew to Vancouver. So I had to go through immigration at the Blaine border crossing. I thought the two young boarder gaurds were going to die laughing when I tried to show them my X-rays!:chuckle

HI,

I had the same experience. The embassy told me the immigration people would want to see them on arrival. When I offered them,he looked shocked and horrified and said no.He probably wouldn't have known which way was up!

Janet

we were told to hand carry the x-rays, but no-one was interested in them. its all about tb but i dont think that anyone has told the immigration people what we are all doing walking through immigration with x-rays in our hands looking like numptyheads!

tonight i am actually feeling a bit homesick, something that in the 2 years that we have been here, i dont usually feel. just missing my mum and dad, its been worse since we have been back in the uk.

its something that we dont expect as we are so looking forward to having a new life. but i know its different for everyone.

although when we left the uk, we were prepared for it to hit us.

:cry:I feel for you. I'm feeling a bit down myself at the moment. Wondering I am doing the right thing. House hasn't sold, we're going on 28th sept. Husband may come back here after one month (have return tickets) until house sells, but you don't know how long that could take. I'm not particularly happy about that, want us all to be together. 17yr old son has mixed feelings about going, leaving friends etc so that's not going to be easy, feel like we're making him go. Daughter is staying here (lives with boyfriend who's on same course as her), she has another year at uni, and may never decide to live in the US, but has a visa. She keeps making comments about us leaving her! She's going to come over at xmas though. Mind's in bits!! Just wonder if it's all going to be worth it. Waited so long for this but feeling so stressed with it all.

Sorry, I should be trying to cheer you up!:smackingf

i can understand how you feel, my daughter was coming with us abd changed her mind, so we had to buy her a flat to live in before we left, as she wanted to stay in scotland where we were living, but her dad lives in wales, her sister lives near glasgow, 160 miles away and her brother lives down south. she is now 22 and copes quite well, but i still wish that she would have given america a go, i dont think that there is much future for her where she lives, but at the end of the day, i had to let her choose. it is a very stressful time for everyone and yes as the mother we feel that everybody blames us if things arent right.
