uk nurses who have come to the usa

Published

I am in the usvi, and have been here nearly a year, maybe all the nurses who have posted their news about immigration, can now post about the differences in the us hospitals. I dont think that american doctors and nurses fully understand where we come from, and the working environment of the nhs, its only when we get here that we can understand the differences. I am sure that stateside hospitals are different even from here. and that they also vary from state to state, but maybe nurses who are waiting to come will be able to pick up some tips and know more than us what to expect.

christine....from wales to scotland to united states virgin islands, and then to the states, in january.

Insurance is a big problem here. You get quoted for renters house insurance on the net and when they phone to make last min checks the premiums go up 300% because you have no credit history. We got quoted $169 on line but the end figure was over $500 because we have no history. Everything is conected to credit checks.

Mobile phones if you want a contract deal then for a company like Verizon they want $400 deposit refundable after a year for each line. We opted for a family deal and they wanted $800 deposit, not many people have that kind of money.

You can understand a deposit but $800.

OGP want $500 for medical insurance cover for the family per month!! You have no choice because I have been told you need to be here for a year before they will consider giving you medical insurance. I do have a company working on this I will keep you informed on what I discover.

blimy! thats alot of money, how many people does that cover?

i think i will do pay as you go mobile (if that exists) like i do here, im not very good at controlling my gob, when i had a contract here it cost me loads!

when we was out in the states last year we bought a pay as you go virgin phone with no problems the only problem we had was we thought we had brought enough scratch cards to last til we got out there but with delays hadn't but thanks to kay when she visited US before she moved bought me one as they now do it when you put $90 will activate for 12 months instead of having to top up every 90 days :)

Scotjan, where are you living and who did you get your car insurance with cheers.

Was just wondering the same myself.......$600 for 6 months ain't bad, compared to some quotes I've heard :uhoh3:

Hi,

I am in California, but not in a large city.My insurance was through Farmers Insurance.I thought that was expensive as I paid about £300 per year in Surrey.Looking at what others are paying it doesn't look so bad now!

Janet

we bought a pay as you go virgin mobile when we came here as well, the only drawback, is that even if anyone rings us we have to pay!

you pay for airtime whether you make the call or not.

we get lots of wrong numbers and spend more answering them than we do making calls.

well my last shift for OGP has been worked on dec 30th and I have now moved to the states to start work tomorrow, so we will just see how much things are different here to what I have experienced in the last 18 months.

Hey calling all UK nurses who have come over to the US-we want to know you experiences good and bad.

well i'm still here, some of the hospitals here suck......big style!

its a totally different ball game to the uk, so be prepared.

about to start a new job this week so will let you know how things are going. seen plenty of the states though, been to reno, sacramento, arizona and san fransisco. enjoying the sunshine at this moment in time.

as for the lifestyle its totally different as well, lots and lots of shops. missing the beaches and the sea of the carribean but we will cope. love to hear from other brits over here and to let us know how the hospital experience is going.
