UCSF MEPN 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, I just wanted to start this new topic for those like myself who are interested in applying to the MEPN program for the 2020 cohort.

Born and raised in SF. Am definitely open to meeting with people.

Does anyone know if the interview format is individiual or group?

Hi everyone! I'm a former MEPN, current NP-1, FNP specialty. I am happy to answer any questions about the program, as we just started break and I have a little time. Good luck to everyone!

@sfdoggy thank you so much!! Do you have advice for those of us preparing for our interviews and what to expect? Like the intensity of the questions, what to wear, and so on?

What does it mean to be NP-1 and a former MEPN student?

It means they are a great resource!

All the medical fields use shorthand for what year student you are. M1 is a 1st-year medical student, D1 is first-year dental school, etc.

MEPN Program is 3 years

Year 1: MEPN year

RN classes Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring. Take NCLEX in summer.

Year 2: NP1

Your NP specialty. Maybe a minor? Fall, Winter, Spring, and possible Summer

Year 2: NP2

Same, but with feeling. Don't worry, there are more tests.

Current MEPN here on a much needed break! Congratulations to all of you who got an interview. That's huge!! And to those of you who didn't this time, I really encourage you to try again. Many of us (myself included) didn't get in the first time, but your continuing interest and resolve really makes a difference.

As far as interviews, I can only speak as a FNP, though I believe they are all similar in format. It's all one-on-one interviews. Each interview session a group arrives and there is breakfast or lunch available. Steven really tries to help everyone relax and be as confident as possible. He'll speak and give you the rundown of the day. You'll also receive your interview times when you check-in (for example, in the morning it will be 9, 10 or 11). When you're not interviewing Steven gives campus tours and you can meet with financial aid.

Interviews are about 45 minutes to an hour. A current professor in your program and a community nurse will interview you, so two people. My memory is somewhat fuzzy, but they ask the basics, for example:

  • Why do you want to be a nurse? (You'll become an RN first, so be sure to acknowledge how integral that is to becoming an NP or CNS)
  • Why UCSF?
  • Why this particular specialty?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

I also looked up "nursing school interview questions" online and tried to answer them for myself. Look professional, but you don't need to wear a suit. Wear something that makes you feel confident and the fabulous person you are. PRACTICE with someone or even better several someones. If you can't, at least practice in the mirror. Remember to breathe. You got this!

What does it mean to have not heard anything from UCSF so far? Some people received interviews and others have received rejections, but I haven’t heard either way, and I’m wondering if that means to wait until Thursday, or if I most likely got rejected.

Im with you on this. I’ve called twice to speak to SJ and feel so shy and embarrassed don’t want to be a pest. So I am planning to wait. I am really hoping it’s a strong yes lol

@lamberd

Thank you so much for this information, seriously helps so much. I hope everyone has a restful holiday season.

Blessings!

I apologize, what is the significance of thursday? Was that the last date we were supposed to hear a response?

I have also not received a response yet ?

I am eagerly waiting and I wish you all good luck!

No matter what, we all deserve it ?

For those who haven’t heard back, the email I got said I had until January 3rd to confirm my interview attendance. Also those who had outstanding classes had until December 15th to show evidence of completing that class or risk having their application administratively removed. So my guess is the list isn’t final and depending on who gets removed by declining an interview or not completing their pre reqs some spaces may open up. I wouldn’t give up hope. Also I’ll be happy to help others too after the application session is over with their essays. Always happy to pay the help I got forward. Hope this helps! Happy holidays.
