Hi everyone, I just wanted to start this new topic for those like myself who are interested in applying to the MEPN program for the 2020 cohort.

Hello everyone, I am a current UCSF MEPN student in my pre-licensure year. I used this portal often during my application and would like to reach out and see if I can help alleviate any stress or answer any questions, so please let me know!

This time last year, it was radio silence. And unfortunately, it will continue to be until the Invite to Interview emails come out. Last year, they came on the last Thursday of November. Overall, plan for all major communications to come out on a Thursday by end of day. Interviews are the 2nd and 3rd Friday of January. Good luck!

Hey, I was wondering about the APHN (advance public health nursing) option. Is it competitive? How many students? What about the background of the students, if you know them?

Hi @KCC2020. I am currently one of 5 APHN in my cohort this year. We are definitely one of the smaller specialties in size, so I guess in that way it's less "competitive". Last year had only 1 or 2 and the year before I believe there were no APHN students. From what I hear they are working on expanding it. In terms of background, I graduated from a CSU in SoCal in 2015 with a degree in Spanish and from 2015 until I got accepted I worked in community health centers throughout Riverside and San Diego counties, mostly in case management type roles.

This is so amazing to hear. I applied! I’ve been working in FQHC managing grants and enrolling families and individuals into public health programs. I currently do case management work. I went to CSUDH for undergrad and CSUB for my MPA. I’m hoping I get chosen!

That's awesome! I love to hear that people are applying to this specialty. My heart is so in it and it sounds like yours is too. I'll reiterate what my classmates have said, no matter what specialty you choose, it's about showing your true self and being genuine about why you are choosing the nursing profession. That in it of itself will take you a long way.

Hi all, I wish I'd known about this thread during the application cycle! Like @kmd1005, I applied for MEPN AGPCNP-OEHN. Does anyone know the June 2020 start date? I'm trying to plan the rest of my life and don't want anything to interfere with orientation and/or first day. thanks! xo

Hi everyone! I'm going to be applying for the PMHNP track next year. I love following along with all of you here! Were any of you able to shadow NP's before applying and if so how did you go about making contacts? I work at a psych hospital that does not employ pych NP's

Go team! I think that many people who want to get into a clinical psychiatric role are in a different position than other medical specialties. I'm not sure who is going to /can let you shadow or get too close without a license in Psych. Psych is one of HIPPA's favorite babbies. Most people have the same paraprofessional experience that you have.

The best interview advice I got was to make other plans besides UCSF. Go into your interviews wanting this but not needing this. Last year the interviews were with one nurse representing the RN role and one representing your NP specialty. Some interviewers are more conversational and some are not going to give you any feedback. They asked me a lot of questions. Basically- practice interviews with someone and know yourself. Whenever a cliche pops out of your mouth, find out what you really mean. What do you think is the hardest thing about being an RN? Where do you see yourself practicing? Why UCSF? Why your specialty? How do you handle conflict? How do you practice self-care?

I am actually not sure what the connection with the VA is. I saw that when I applied. I spoke with a student and a faculty member and no one could figure out what was happening with UCSF and the VA. However, UCSF is very involved with underserved communities such as people experiencing homelessness.

Good luck!

Edit: "Invitations to interview and initial "deny" letters typically are dispatched in the second week of December. Be sure that we have your correct contact information and address for these important messages.

In-person interviews are required and held on the final two Fridays in January.

The final admit and deny letters are typically sent in the third or fourth week of February.

Student orientation is usually held in the first or second week of June, just before class instruction begins."

I think all we can do is wait until December, and then make our decisions then, what do you think?

You only have 2 weeks to make your Samuel Merritt decision or it will go to someone else! My acceptance email stated I needed to submit my letter of intent and deposit by Oct 24. I did so already to lock in a program. I honestly don't know what I would do if I began the program and found out Feb that I got into UCSF (my #1 school) but since that's so unlikely I probably won't have to worry about it. I don't want to risk losing my shot! And I got really excited about that mobile clinic SM has so I think I'd stick with them anyway.

Just confirming, are you talking about the Sac campus?

Any regular AGPCNP applicants or MEPN students here? The anxiety and anticipation is already setting in.
