UCLA new RN residency program 2010

Published

Hi,

I just wanted to start a thread for people applying to UCLA's new grad program this year. I have filled out the application online, but wondered if I should send a hard copy too. Does anyone else have any information? I heard that for the last new grad class, they had more than 800 applicants for 80 slots. Kind of discouraging...

Yes, thank you Potassium. That's more information than I had to go on. What's confusing me even more is that I have RN friends who work at UCLA, and every once in a while they tell me about a new hire on their floor who don't go through the new grad program at all. Connections? Who knows...

This thread is helping me keep my sanity as I wait...thank you so much to everyone who participates. It's so ironic...I worried about passing nursing school and the boards all the time, but never worried about getting a job afterwards...and it's been the total opposite!

Thanks Potassium ! That info is really helpful. Now just have to wait out the two weeks. Hopefully we all get to the next step. To think about it. I saw from one post they're suppose to be hiring 80 so if there's 200 of us we have a really good chance :)

Good point tomato head.

Ya I wonder if they are cutting out the in-person interview with the senior nurse recruiter and going straight to the unit manager. I guess it would make sense because the summer cohort started their application process Feb 1st (I think) and didn't start work until August. So that's 6+ months of going through the hiring process. We didn't apply until Oct 25 and start in Feb or March so that's only about 4 months!! I guess all we can do is hope!! :)

No problem guys! I'm also not sure regarding the interview with the senior nurse recruiter, didn't receive any info about that....

Perhaps the "new hires" were not necessarily "new grads"? Maybe they're new to UCLA, but they're not new to nursing--perhaps they have the "1 year or greater" coveted experience we are so desperately lacking. ;)

Actually I have three friends that were hired from my nursing school. They are new grads but they did not go through what were applying for. They had a preceptor and also had to take classes. One of them told me that they just kept calling the HR until something opened up. persistence I guess :)

Wow, that's awesome. I never even thought of that--calling HR until something opened up, lol. I thought for sure they would get sick of me or something, but I guess persistence used wisely does pay off!

If there are 80 spots and 200 talent plus-ers that is good odds. But I would imagine it still depends on what unit you applied to, unless they took that into consideration as well in picking who got a talent plus interview. I put NICU as my first choice. I am guessing many other ppl did too :)

No, they were right out of SMC, a local ADN program (same as me). My friend said she didn't know how they were hired.

Meanwhile, there was a Sacramento Bee article saying how a nursing degree in California is "golden" as far as getting a job goes! Not here in LA....

But here's the link:

onestepatatime-NICU is my first choice as well. It would be such a dream come true if I could get a position in the NICU at UCLA. Is it me or has NICU really grown in popularity in the last year or two? When I started nursing school I was so happy that no one else in my program wanted NICU. Now it feels like a lot of people do. Good luck to you! I really hope in my heart that there are a lot of NICU positions for new grads at UCLA. Good luck to everyone!

I am currently heading into my last term of nursing school and am planning on applying for the UCLA residency program in March. I just wanted to let you all know how helpful this thread has been for someone like me. I've learned a lot about what to prepare for and expect.

Also, I wanted to remind anyone that applied this time that they might still be able to apply next time. As long as you graduated in the last 12 months, you'll still be eligible. I am going to apply in March but I won't graduate until April. I think this will probably put me at the back of the line so I intend to apply again the next time around.

Are many of you who got phone calls already working in nursing? I was also wondering if the majority of folks were already living in LA. I am from LA but am currently in New Mexico. Just wondering how much of a difference that made for folks.
