UCLA new RN residency program 2010

Published

Hi,

I just wanted to start a thread for people applying to UCLA's new grad program this year. I have filled out the application online, but wondered if I should send a hard copy too. Does anyone else have any information? I heard that for the last new grad class, they had more than 800 applicants for 80 slots. Kind of discouraging...

@ peters- yes it seems like NICU is one of the more competitive specialties. They even have a discovery health tv show dedicated to it now, maybe the rise in popularity stems from that? Really wishing the best for all of us, it's definitly tough out there. From reading the posts from last time around it sounded like NICU hired 4. I wonder if they even consider giving you an interview for your second or third choices. I get the impression that most hospitals want you to work where your passion is so I do t get why they have you apply to multiple units.

@djp* - reading the older threads it sounded like those who applied from out of state had a different timeline but I have not heard anything like that this time around. You might want to look over those old threads to get an idea. Do not know if they are preferential to ca residents or not. Definitly smart of you to prepare early, I'd also recommend taking the nclex asap after you graduate!

@onestep - Thanks for the info. I will take a look at the previous posts. I am trying to be as prepared as possible and plan to take the NCLEX as soon as I am able.

I actually have a place to live in LA and so moving wouldn't be too tough. It's just that I can't move until I have a job and I get really freaked out when I see how hard it is for folks to get jobs. I am glad that quite a few people on this thread got contacted and got interviews.

@djp* - to be honest, i really think UCLA determined applicants that would go forward with the interview process based on when the application was submitted. I know extremely well-qualified applicants who didn't get an opportunity to interview with talentplus simply because they submitted their application later on during the week. so, my advice would be to literally apply the second the application becomes available...

As for prioritizing california residents -- i'm actually getting my BSN out in NYC and i'm not even a US citizen for that matter - so I don't think they factor in california residency. however, its unclear on whether this would play a role going forward with the interview process...i don't believe anyone has heard back from anyone at this point, so we shall see. i think its a wonderful thing that you're preparing well ahead of time though. good luck!

I just got back into town after spending Thanksgiving with extended family....

Has anyone gotten a call from the recruiters and/or moved on in any way after the Talent Plus interview?

No one that I know has.

From reading the forum. It seems like we all in the waiting game. I'm just hoping that we finally get a chance to get into a hospital. Finished by ADN in December 2008. Didn't have a job then. So I finished my BSN this year and started my MSN this month. I'm hoping this counts for something at least at UCLA. I wish everyone the best. We will get into that coveted spots sooner or later. :)

I admire you for improving your knowledge base - it's very impressive, what you've done. I would like to go for my MSN as well...are you doing a bridge or online program?

I'm doing it online. At this time when a new grad program is my priority, I want to have a flexible schedule with work and school. I do want to both at the same time which I have been doing since 2003. Its a long process but someday hopefully I can finish school.

That's great...know what you mean about the long process. Do you have any advice for me re choosing an online program? Which are good, which are not so good, etc?

First thing you have to look is what type of MSN do you want? Then it has to be accredited by the CCNE or NLN. I think more programs are accredited by the CCNE. Let me know what type of program you're interested. I can help guide you. It was a nightmare to look for the right program for me. It took me almost 4 months to settle into an MSN program.

Thank you...I'm interested in a geriatric focus, so will start doing the research now. The only online program I knew about before was the Frontier Nursing school...and they mostly offer NPs and CNMs...
