Has anyone heard anything back from the UCLA New Grad Summer Program for 2010? I applied in the beginning of February and have only had a phone interview so far, with no feedback yet. Any info or others' experience would be much appreciated, thank you!
Btw, I'm planning to apply to UCLA again. Do you guys know when the next application will open? I'm thinking of just going for Med-Surg this time and just move on to PICU when I have enough experience. Do you think it'll be a good idea to say that to your interviewer? Or not because it'll show that I don't intent to stay in the unit for a long time? Thanks and good luck to everyone! :)
When I was over in Nursing Recruitment the other day for some stuff, I overheard them say that the next round of applications will open Nov 1st and to look for information on the website sometime in October. Good Luck!
Hello to all SM New Grad. I just got hired at SM cardiac tele. I received a phone call on Tuesday saying that I will start work this Thursday. I was very excited. On Thursday I only had a computer orientation, which had a lot of information and the person who was teaching it did not go into details of what the nurses computer skills should be. On Friday I filled out paperwork's and did the compliance test.
Now I am scheduled to start this sunday, but I have not had any general or nursing orientation or any of the core classes.
I am going into the unit blank.
I am really scared!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello folks!
I was so excited reading this thread! I just scheduled my interivew with UCLA for the Geriatric Medicince Step Down unit. I noticed one person on this thread was offered a position on that unit (junbug, I think, sorry if I've got that wrong!). I was wondering if you liked the unit so far? What is the manager of the unit like? I'm absolutely terrified of this interview! What does the physical entail? It sounds like an intense interview. I would meet with Sheri in HR at 11:00 to "prep" for my interview with the manager, and then interview with the manager at 1pm! Prep!? Holy goodness! I want this SO bad.
I would be relocating to LA, does anyone know if they offer a relocation package? I didn't notice anything on the website. I don't live too far away. I currently live in CO.
Any help from anyone who has gone through the interview process would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It's Janbug. :)
I like the unit that I'm working on. There are 3 other new grads that were also hired (including me, a total of 4) so we're basically going through orientation together. So far most of the people on the unit have been very helpful and supportive. I was working days but now that I'm halfway through orientation, I will be switching to nights starting tomorrow. The manager, Valerie, is really nice so don't be nervous at all. She'll probably ask a lot of questions but nearly every interview is like that.
As for the physical, it wasn't anything serious. A TB test, eye exam, touch your toes, reach up above your head, etc.
And about the relocation package.. I think I heard one of the other new grads mention that it's $1500 reimbursement. You're going to have to ask Sheri for more details though. I didn't qualify cuz I already live in LA.
What part of CO are you from? I've spent some time in Arvada and Boulder cuz that's where my bf grew up and to college at. :)
Hi Nurset99,Good luck! Just wondering, for which program are you applying for? I thought the Summer cohort already starter?
Sheri is really nice, so don't stress too much about it. As for the relocation package, I haven't heard of that one before.
Good luck!
Hi Monkeysarecute!
I'm not a new grad! I should have clarified. I just stumbled upon this thread and noticed that people were discussing UCLA, the interview process, the physical and the specific units. I just wanted some feedback from those of you who experienced this process already. I tend to stress out over interviews way too much, so I always need a little reassurance
Thank you for answering some of my questions! Sheri seems so nice! I'm excited to meet these people soon! Thanks for wishing me luck! I want to live in LA soooooo badly

JANbug!!! Sorry about that! Thank you so much for your response. I even tried friend requesting you to try to ask you some questions, but you answered them here! Thank you, and please don't think I'm stalking you! I was just excited to see someone who was working on the unit that I'm interviewing for. I'm hoping they hire me for nights because I'm not a day shift gal at all I tried to clarify what shift I was interviewing for and the best answer I got was "well, I think our 12 hour shifts are all rotating." Oh no! Please for the love of God, don't make me work days!
Ok, the physical doesn't sound horrible. I'm glad you like the unit. That is so important to me. Any floor a nurse works on will be difficult, but I like knowing that despite all of the hectic stuff going on, we can work as a team. I need teamwork and open communication!! Without those, I can't thrive.
I will definitely ask Sheri about the relocation package. Thank you! I sure hope they offer one, I'll definitely need it!
I'm glad the unit manager is nice! I'm honored she even wanted to interview me. I must say all the questions like "tell me a time when xyz happened, and what you did to get the situation under control." AH!
I live in Denver. Boulder is beautiful. The current fire in Boulder is a tragedy. Arvada is also nice. I love Colorado, but I'm ready to live my dream. I've wanted to live in California for years! So, I hope my dream comes true. What part of LA do you live in? I've been looking at apartments just in case I get the job, and holy goodness! LA is HUGE. I can't figure out what is close to the hospital and what isn't. I was looking at Marina Del Rey. It's gorgeous and the studios aren't horribly priced. I may try to find a roommate, too. Any suggestions on areas to look in? I did check out Westwood since that's where UCLA hospital is. I found one reasonably priced studio, but the rest was way too expensive.
Thanks again for answering my questions and putting my mind at ease a bit!
Not sure what they mean by "rotating" because I was told that once we were off orientation the unit director (Valerie) would determine where the openings were and would place us. She did say that we could state a preference, but she couldn't guarantee it.
I'm in Palms. It's about a 15min. drive to the hospital by streets, maybe more or less of a commute by freeway depending on time of day. Oh and FYI - the Geriatric Med-Surg Stepdown unit is at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, not Ronald Reagan (the one in Westwood). Both facilities are affiliated with UCLA, but Ronald Reagan is the one that's more well-known because it's the big trauma hospital and Santa Monica is more of a community hospital.
As for locations to search.. it really depends on what you're looking for. Do you have any pets? Do you need an assigned parking spot? I used padmapper.com to find my current place. It allows you to search by address/city/zip and you can select preferences like min/max rent, # of bedrooms, dog or cat-friendly, etc. One tip: Check if the place comes with a fridge. In LA rental companies/landlords aren't required to provide a fridge.. so unless you're okay with buying or renting a fridge, try to find a place that already comes with one. It's one less thing to have to move.
Let me know if you have any more questions but I apologize in advance if I don't reply right away. I'm going back to work tomorrow and it'll be my first time on night shift.
p.s. I secretly love Colorado too, but only during the summer. My SoCal-born self can't handle shoveling snow or temperatures below 50 degrees.
Well, I hope she can put me on nights if I get the position. I love working nights. Days would be a very difficult adjustment, but I'd do it if it meant I could relocate to CA.
Good luck on your first night shift! Thanks for letting me know that I had the completely wrong location. Whoops
Yes, Colorado is great, but I HATE winters so much. I was born and raised in Detroit, MI, so when I moved to CO, the winters are so much milder than those I experienced in MI, but I still dread living through the winter. Yuck. I don't want to see snow for a long time.
Thank you for letting me know about the refrigerator situation! Yes, I have a very fat cat that would be coming with me if I get the position.
If I have any more questions, I will definitely post them here since I can't PM yet. Thank you so much!! Oh, I did have one last question. On the career site, it lists a minimum salary and maximum salary. Did you find those to be held true? I would sort of like to know whereabouts they start their RNs. Since it is so expensive to live out there, I just want to make sure it is doable. Thank you!!

Unfortunately I can't answer this question. I was hired as a New Grad RN and all the New Grads started at the same hourly rate. I'm assuming you're an experienced nurse (but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), so you're going to have to talk with Sheri about how salary offers are determined.

Sheri told me that PICU might be hiring 10 new grads, but if the NM said 8, then I guess that's more accurate. As far as I know, there were already 3 positions taken when I met with Sheri and 3 more were available when I met with the NM.
I'm guessing I didn't get the position. It's been almost a month since I had my 3rd interview (with the NM and an unofficial interview with the staff) and I never got the call back. I'm just waiting for my official rejection letter, so I can move on. (Especially since everytime I check my application status, it still says "In Review", but it was last updated on 063010. LOL).
Oh well, I guess it was expecting too much when I applied for a PICU position when I only had 1 day of experience in the PICU. It's okay. I'll live. :) Time to move on.
