UCLA New Grad Program 2010

Published

Has anyone heard anything back from the UCLA New Grad Summer Program for 2010? I applied in the beginning of February and have only had a phone interview so far, with no feedback yet. Any info or others' experience would be much appreciated, thank you!

Yep, navy blue with "UCLA Medical Center (Health Services?) Registered Nurse" in white embroidered printing on the left chest. I'm going to start a campaign to make the "UCLA" in gold script-so much prettier!

Hey guys this may seem dumb but the more I thought about it the more I realized that I have no idea where to go once I get to the hospital on Monday! Does anyone know the specific location we are supposed to go to?

Hi everyone and congratulations! I recently was offered a position on 8ICU at RR and am so excited! I start the new hire physical/paperwork process tomorrow. I have the physical appointments on Monday and Wednesday and then another appointment on Thursday.. but I am not sure what this appointment is for. The person on the phone was very rushed and trying to get me off very fast! So I was curious if anyone knew what to expect.. also should I fill out the paperwork from the packet before I go in or do I need to wait until I go in to start filling it out. And one more, do we need to make an appointment to get fitted for uniforms? The paper did not provide any number.. just that they are open tuesday-thursday. Thanks everyone!

I'm so excited (but very, very nervous) to start in PICU! Good luck to everyone and I'll probably see some of you at orientation!

Hi,

Congrats again to everyone that is going to be starting @ UCLA! Where did everyone find housing? I just found a place yesterday in West Hollywood, but I am a little nervous about the price bc it is way more than I have ever spent on an apt before. But, I love the neighborhood and its less than 3 miles to RR. Good luck to everyone as you tie up loose ends and get settled!

I've been searching for apartments in the area too and the pricing for apartments in Los Angeles is seriously different from Minnesota. Does your apartment still have vacancies, preferably studio or 1 bed/1 bath? You can PM me the information if you'd like :)

Hi g3rly,

I was also hired in the PICU. I only got a call telling me to do a physical and then go get my fingerprint at the HR. However, I have not received any official offering letter or anything like that. Did you? I am kind of lost.. Does anyone who was hired at UCLA PICU know anything? Thanks!

Hi Peachsnapple and G3rly,

I also have not gotten an official "offer letter" but I am guessing we will get this at our new hire orientation? U need to call nursing resources to schedule your new hire paperwork day (done on tues or thurs) and go in for a uniform fitting (do this before your new hire session). I got this info from someone who called me on behalf of the manager that hired me (I think it was a unit secretary or something). When you call nursing resources they will get your address to mail you a packet with all the other necessary paperwork to fill out before your new hire orientation. PM me if you need any other specific info.

As far as housing, I found my place on craigslist, but definitely saw a lot of sketchy places before I found the right one. There aren't any other vacancies in my building...I am paying 1450, which is a little but more than what I am used to but I think it is worth it to be in such a nice, safe, fun neighborhood and within 3 miles of UCLA; (Westwood/Brentwood and Santa Monica seem to be more expensive than Weho). My suggestion is that if you are relocating maybe find a room/hotel to rent for a couple of days during your first week so you can check out the apartment before you commit. LA definitely has very nice and very NOT SO NICE areas.

Can't wait to meet you PICU girls! :redbeathe

Peachsnapple and AngeRN09, I'm so excited to meet you girls! I'm new to the area and so don't have many friends besides family. It's nice to meet you new people, especially those that will understand what you're going through these first few months of training!

I called Sheri a week ago and asked her about an official offer letter and she told me that we won't be receiving an official offer letter. They don't do that, but if you need something along the line of an offer letter she could write you an unofficial letter claiming that you've been hired to work as an RN for UCLA Mattel.

See you Aug 23rd! :)

hope to meet you guys too. I'm from out of town.. and would definitely like to meet some new nursing friends!

Hi g3rly and angeRN09,

I can't wait to meet you two! Do you guys know anyone else working in the PICU? Have you girls done your new hire paperwork yet?

I don't know of anyone else in PICU, but the NM said she was planning on hiring about 8 people, right? I am doing my new hire next Tuesday, and moving this weekend.

I finished my new hire paperwork last week because I have to go back home to get things done before heading back to California for the official move in! There's so many things to think about... health insurance, other insurance options, retirement, and the list goes on - it's all nerve-wracking but oh so exciting!

I don't know how many people are being hired for the PICU. I think it's a combination of experienced and new grad nurses because during my new hire paperwork meeting I met a girl who is starting in the PICU and she had worked in the PICU for about 4 years now.
