UCLA New Grad Program 2010

Published

Has anyone heard anything back from the UCLA New Grad Summer Program for 2010? I applied in the beginning of February and have only had a phone interview so far, with no feedback yet. Any info or others' experience would be much appreciated, thank you!

Thanks, Janbug! I've been a nurse for over a year now, so I'm hoping I'd make the minimum listed. I really the site you suggested, padmapper. Thanks for that!

Not sure what they mean by "rotating" because I was told that once we were off orientation the unit director (Valerie) would determine where the openings were and would place us. She did say that we could state a preference, but she couldn't guarantee it.

I'm in Palms. It's about a 15min. drive to the hospital by streets, maybe more or less of a commute by freeway depending on time of day. Oh and FYI - the Geriatric Med-Surg Stepdown unit is at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, not Ronald Reagan (the one in Westwood). Both facilities are affiliated with UCLA, but Ronald Reagan is the one that's more well-known because it's the big trauma hospital and Santa Monica is more of a community hospital.

As for locations to search.. it really depends on what you're looking for. Do you have any pets? Do you need an assigned parking spot? I used padmapper.com to find my current place. It allows you to search by address/city/zip and you can select preferences like min/max rent, # of bedrooms, dog or cat-friendly, etc. One tip: Check if the place comes with a fridge. In LA rental companies/landlords aren't required to provide a fridge.. so unless you're okay with buying or renting a fridge, try to find a place that already comes with one. It's one less thing to have to move.

Let me know if you have any more questions but I apologize in advance if I don't reply right away. I'm going back to work tomorrow and it'll be my first time on night shift.

Well, I survived the interview! It wasn't that bad. I got nervous because the assistant nursing manager sat in on the interview and she doodled on her paper the entire time....not a very promising sign for me :crying2: She was bored out of her wits, but she was very nice. The nursing manager is SO nice! She said she would let me know by early next week since I would need time to put in my notice at my current job and then drive out to Cali!

I actually found the perfect studio in Marina Del Rey. I'm totally sold, and it's within my price range. I know I shouldn't be jumping the gun, but just in case they offer me the job, I'm leaving ASAP! Keep your fingers crossed for me, ladies!!! I'd love to work on this unit!!

Oh, and the nursing manager said she would keep me on nights since I've always worked nights. Yay! If she's interested, I'd still need to do the TalentMine phone interview (gag, I've done those before, don't like them!!). Ok, I need to sleep. I have to work tonight :(

Fingers crossed for you! I think I'll be rotating between days and nights. One of the other new grads was recently told that she'd be rotating so I assume all of us will be too.

Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed!!!! I need all the prayers I can get on this one!

Oh, I'm sorry about rotating :( This is a common thing for new grads, which I think stinks. That's hard on your body, but I have to say, working day shift is a good thing because you work with the doctors, family, etc, and you learn a lot faster than you do on nights. Hang in there, and hopefully we'll be coworkers soon!!!

Ok, ladies. I think I'm progressing through the interview process! Next up, the talentplus interview. I've done one of these before, and I think they're fine. I just don't like that they take 45mins to an hour. I've done Talentmine, not talentplus. Wish me luck! I just want an offer already....yes or no!!! Hope you're all well!

Ok, I think I survived Talentplus. Yikes. And should I be worried if my application status no longer shows it's "active" - I'm freaking out here!!! :(

No, because my application status still says "In Review" and I've been working since August.. :p

Congrats on having the TalentPlus done with. That was the weirdest phone interview I've ever had.

Thank you! Can you completely bomb the Talentplus interview and not be considered? I didn't feel good about that interview after I hung up the phone. I had NO idea how much detail they were looking for. It was an awful interview. The questions were so weird. I'm just stressed to the max :( The nurse manager did call Tuesday because I called to follow up on Monday, and she told me she still has two more people to interview, so she won't have a decision until next week. I just want to know either way!! I'm dying here! Thanks for keeping my spirits up, Janbug! I appreciate your responses, they make me feel better!!

I'm not sure how TalentPlus works so I can't really respond to that question. I know that it's used as a screening tool, but usually they put you through Talentplus first, then the recruiter interview, then the mgr interview. At least that's how it was for us New Grads. Since you had your recruiter interview and mgr interview before Talentplus I would think that would be a good sign? I mean obviously they liked you enough to put you through the entire process.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. :)

Ok, you just made me feel better :) I thought it was a good sign that they had me come out for an interview with the manager, too. I have to say that the meeting with the HR rep wasn't even an interview. She just went over all the benefits, what my pay would be, how to transfer my license, etc. I feel like the interview with the nurse manager went really well, too. I really liked her. I'm just a worry wart. Sorry for all the questions. I just need to be comforted. Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me :)

Well, I just wanted to share that I got the job! I still have to pass the employee health screen or whatever, so I'm not entirely sure when my start date is! The physical isn't crazy hard, is it? I'm pretty healthy, but I'm still nervous. lol. I hope to see you sometime, Janbug! She told me today that the shift would be rotating :( Sort of bummed to hear that, but whatever! It's UCLA HOSPITAL!
