    UCLA New Grad Program 2010

YAY! Congrats! The health screen isn't bad, it's just a 2-step TB screen and touching your toes, etc. I wouldn't stress about it at all. We'll probably see each other soon then. I'm back on days right now and will be rotating to nights in November. I'm not too happy with that, but I can't really do anything about it. Sorry this is a short post, I had a bad day today and I will be flying solo (I'll be off orientation!) for the first time tomorrow. Wish me luck! p.s. My first name is Jan. :)

I'm not sure how TalentPlus works so I can't really respond to that question. I know that it's used as a screening tool, but usually they put you through Talentplus first, then the recruiter interview, then the mgr interview. At least that's how it was for us New Grads. Since you had your recruiter interview and mgr interview before Talentplus I would think that would be a good sign? I mean obviously they liked you enough to put you through the entire process. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. :)

No, because my application status still says "In Review" and I've been working since August.. Congrats on having the TalentPlus done with. That was the weirdest phone interview I've ever had.

Fingers crossed for you! I think I'll be rotating between days and nights. One of the other new grads was recently told that she'd be rotating so I assume all of us will be too.

Unfortunately I can't answer this question. I was hired as a New Grad RN and all the New Grads started at the same hourly rate. I'm assuming you're an experienced nurse (but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), so you're going to have to talk with Sheri about how salary offers are determined.

Not sure what they mean by "rotating" because I was told that once we were off orientation the unit director (Valerie) would determine where the openings were and would place us. She did say that we could state a preference, but she couldn't guarantee it. I'm in Palms. It's about a 15min. drive to the hospital by streets, maybe more or less of a commute by freeway depending on time of day. Oh and FYI - the Geriatric Med-Surg Stepdown unit is at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, not Ronald Reagan (the one in Westwood). Both facilities are affiliated with UCLA, but Ronald Reagan is the one that's more well-known because it's the big trauma hospital and Santa Monica is more of a community hospital. As for locations to search.. it really depends on what you're looking for. Do you have any pets? Do you need an assigned parking spot? I used padmapper.com to find my current place. It allows you to search by address/city/zip and you can select preferences like min/max rent, # of bedrooms, dog or cat-friendly, etc. One tip: Check if the place comes with a fridge. In LA rental companies/landlords aren't required to provide a fridge.. so unless you're okay with buying or renting a fridge, try to find a place that already comes with one. It's one less thing to have to move. Let me know if you have any more questions but I apologize in advance if I don't reply right away. I'm going back to work tomorrow and it'll be my first time on night shift. p.s. I secretly love Colorado too, but only during the summer. My SoCal-born self can't handle shoveling snow or temperatures below 50 degrees.

It's Janbug. :) I like the unit that I'm working on. There are 3 other new grads that were also hired (including me, a total of 4) so we're basically going through orientation together. So far most of the people on the unit have been very helpful and supportive. I was working days but now that I'm halfway through orientation, I will be switching to nights starting tomorrow. The manager, Valerie, is really nice so don't be nervous at all. She'll probably ask a lot of questions but nearly every interview is like that. As for the physical, it wasn't anything serious. A TB test, eye exam, touch your toes, reach up above your head, etc. And about the relocation package.. I think I heard one of the other new grads mention that it's $1500 reimbursement. You're going to have to ask Sheri for more details though. I didn't qualify cuz I already live in LA. What part of CO are you from? I've spent some time in Arvada and Boulder cuz that's where my bf grew up and to college at. :)

All UCLA nurses wear Navy Blue scrubs.

Okay so I just called Mandi at SM-UCLA HR. If you were instructed to show up on Monday for hospital orientation at SM-UCLA: Valet park your car and we'll be receiving our parking passes and ID badges later that day once we meet with parking, security, etc. Nursing orientation is on Tuesday and that is when we will get information regarding scrubs, get fitted for scrubs, etc. No idea what happens on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, but I figured we'd learn more after Day 1. Time to relax and breathe now. :) p.s. Mandi also said that the room that orientation is being held in gets really cold, so bring a sweater or jacket!

Re: Scrubs Sheri said that we're given 3 sets. Anyone know if that includes the scrub jacket? I get the feeling that we'll have to pay extra for that one. I spoke with my unit director (3 Tower - Geriatric Stepdown) a few days ago and she said business casual clothing was fine for orientation starting on Monday. She didn't know when we would be getting our uniforms, but probably by the end of the week?

I have not heard back from my unit director yet. I will be calling her tomorrow and hopefully she'll be able to give me a definite date. When I went to HR last week, I was told the same thing you were.. that everyone except for ICU/CCU would be starting on Aug. 2nd. I was also told that after my health clearance was done, all that info would be emailed to the unit director and she would contact me regarding the next step in the process. I thought I was going to hear from her today, but since I didn't I'm going to give her a call tomorrow.

WHOA. August 2nd? I feel so... unprepared. Thanks for the heads up. I'm going back to HR/Employee Health on Thursday so I'll try to get more info (if possible).

I would go ahead and make the appointment with the health center. That's probably the first step in the process and you'll probably get more information about the rest of the process afterwards. Congrats! :)
