Hi- Is anyone applying to UCLA's MECN program for next fall?
Same here. I have two outstanding pre-reqs. One, Physiology because the class I took was over five years ago, so they wanted a recent one. Second, Epi that I will be taking during summer session. We all just have to wait. They told me it won't affect their decision, well, I really hope so. Hopefully, someone from the past cohort can testify that their outstanding pre-reqs didn't affect their acceptance to UCLA.
Hi Everyone!
I'm a current first year MECN student and came across this thread. Don't worry about outstanding prereqs. They don't factor that into your acceptance. I had two prereqs I needed to fill and I know most of my classmates had other prereqs as well.
Good luck with the wait! I know how nerve-racking it could be.
@myck706 Hi, thank you for your advice:) I ams sure everyone in this thread is jealous of you (just the fact that you are over with this whole waiting process AND in the program.. Whoa!)
I have a question about the program..
do you mind sharing your experience at UCLA? The main thing i would like to know is daily/weekly schedules..
do you get to see your family and friends? Or is it really true that you dont get to see them once you enter the program?
Do you get breaks like undergraduates?
thanks:)

Hi Annie,
I'm only in my second quarter of the program so I can only speak of what I've experienced thus far. So far, I'm having a good time in the program. You become extremely close with your cohort and we're like a big family, helping one another out.
For both Fall '13 and Spring '14, we're attending school 3 days a week. Some days can be a drag (10 hour days of lectures and small breaks), but that can change for you. It's all about time management! I know some people can be overwhelmed and feel like they can't have time with friends and family, but I see my friends and family on a normal basis (ex. I go out every weekend). You really need to make time for yourself or you will burn out. Trust me...if I can do it, anyone can. I didn't come from a science background so I was literally sh***ing bricks when we started. We get normal breaks (Winter break, Spring break), but keep in mind you have to attend Summer session as well.
Also, be prepared for a lot of moving parts. The program is still fairly "new" and since they recently switched to a larger cohort (90 students), they're still working out a few kinks. If you have a type-A personality it might become bothersome but honestly, you just need to take it as it comes because it will all eventually work itself out.
Hope this answers some questions you have. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!
Hi there fellow applicants! I am sure you are also getting incredibly anxious! :nailbiting:I emailed the office of admissions last week to ask myself if they were letting 90 into this cohort and the response I received was:
We received 515 applications and we are admitted 70 applicants this year.
So, the info my friend had shared was accurate. I feel like there was some controversy about the cohort growing to 90 so maybe this is a good thing overall. It just means less spots available, though. Where else did you all apply? This purgatory we're in is so difficult. I feel like I can't move forward until I know what my life will be for the next couple of years lol.

:(
I'm sure this will be much better for the cohort, but yikes. Praying to be part of that 14%

Hi Everyone - just curious: is everyone finished with all (except for epidemiology) pre-reqs? I am finishing 2 right now (one on Friday). They have told me a bunch of times that that is OK but I think I'm the only one with outstanding pre-reqs. Hmmm... Also, met 2 current MECN students at UCLA SM over the past month. Both told me it was intense. They are both in the second year. One of them told me she was accepted from the wait list in April. (Two years ago...) That's all I know!
