Hi ceecoxy! I submitted my application on Wednesday. UCLA’s MECN program is my top choice; I don’t know how I’m going to endure months of anxious waiting.
Have you finished your app yet?
Hi! I'm finishing my Statement of Purpose and 2 pre-reqs right now. Did you get any tips on the SOP? I have applied for a Masters in Education before but I think it was a personal statement - not a Statement of Purpose so I am trying to get some idea of what they are looking for. I read UCLA's webpage about it and the criteria. Probably just being neurotic! Congrats for finishing yours! How many programs did you apply to?
Well I attended one of the information sessions and they said that your Statement of Purpose is your chance to tell the reviewer about yourself. They want to know WHY nursing. They want to see that you’ve gained exposure to the nursing profession and that you understand what it’s about (via volunteering or work). They also discouraged applicants from singularly focusing on the typical ‘sick relative’ story.
Don’t fret about it; try to speak from your heart.
I’m applying to CSUN & CSULA as well. I contemplated Mt. St Mary’s too, but the tuition is outrageous. Where are you applying?
Good luck writing dear J

I was planning on CSUDH, but it looks like their program is under review.. How is everyone feeling about their applications? Is UCLA your top choice?

I'm applying to UCLA too.
Have either of you heard about CSULA's tuition rate increase? They were supposed to update their application info this month, but nothing is up yet. I was hoping they weren't going to go through with it...
Hi cj! Yes I also heard a rumor about the CSULA tuition increase, but unfortunately, I haven't discovered anything concrete or final yet.
Good luck w/ your submission this week peppymint!

Hi all! I just submitted my application and have no idea how to wait until the spring!
Anyone want to share their background? It looks like a lot of people did that in the forums previous years and I'm happy to start. I had a 3.67 GPA in undergrad, 150 hours volunteer experience in patient rounding in a palliative care and hospice unit, and currently volunteer with a hospice organization visiting a patient once per week. I want to be a hospice nurse, and talked about how I came to that realization in my personal statement. In the process of completing my prereqs and have only physiology and the second part of chem outstanding by deadline. Am also a California resident!
Good luck to all :)
Application submitted!! And the waiting game begins.... This is going to be painful!
A little about myself - I graduated in 2011 from a small east coast school with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I had a 3.35 GPA. I worked as an engineer for two years and quit my job to pursue nursing. I've been taking what's left of my prereqs since June (A&P, microbio, psychology, stats) and have a 4.0 in those. I have 125+ hours of hospital volunteer experience and 8+ years of being a volunteer fire fighter. I moved here from the east coast in June, and will be a CA resident by the time classes potentially start next fall!

Does anyone have any idea if an admissions committee would care if your volunteer hours aren't very recent? I did 250 volunteer hours between August 2011- August 2012, but between full-time work and taking pre-reqs, I haven't been able to do any since.
Hi Shirley - I think those hours sound recent enough. It's not like they happened 20 years ago! Good luck!
Oh gosh - I have been home with my kids (ages 3 and 5) for a few years. Before that I taught 6th grade math & science in South LA. Before that I was a junior partner in a small animation company. We made Froot Loops, Frosted Flakes & Keebler commercials. I have a BA in English from Smith College and an MEd from UCLA. I am finishing Anatomy & Stats right now. I still need to do Physiology in the winter/spring. I am only applying to MECN right now as it has the fewest pre-reqs. Currently I volunteer for a hospice in Santa Monica and I am also a Care Extender with UCLA Medical Center. I have logged about 75 hours on the Oncology floor and as a greeter at the SM hospital. I am interested in oncology and hospice as well as radiology. That's about it for me! If I don't get into MECN I will work on more pre-reqs for some other programs. Still working on Statement of Purpose and then clicking "Submit!"
