UCLA MECN Fall 2011

Published

Hello,

I saw that the MECN application for UCLA has been posted today. Is anyone applying to the Fall 2011 program?? I haven't found a thread going on yet...Maybe we can share our questions/concerns regarding the application process here.

I am guessing the health care experience does not help much. I do not know what I could have done different.

I have been working in health care for 14 years.

Been a respiratory therapist for 11 years. I work in neonatal and pediatric critical care.

Worked for a neurorehabilitation while in school for my bachelors for 3 years.

Research with one of the top Children's Hospitals in the country.

Educator for TOBI (drug for kids with CF)

Volunteer experience in health care and community service events.

Certified already in BLS, NRP, PALS and ACLS.

Letters of rec from my nurse manager, another RN I work with and my attending physician.

Bachelors in Health Science and Respiratory Care.

Grades were similar to those who were admitted on here... I don't know what else I could have changed.

Any ideas?

@RRTforKids - it's hard to say why well-qualified people are passed over by various programs. someone made a good point earlier in this thread. sometimes schools aim for a diverse group of people in their program. in your case, perhaps they already filled the slot(s) reserved for applicants who already have careers in healthcare. so don't second-guess yourself.

Well I am left second guessing... I did not get in. =-P I just don't know what to change if I decide to apply again to UCLA next year....

of those of us wait listed, does anyone know when we find out our final fate???

not sure, i imagine that we'll hear right around when the letters for intent to register are due. to those accepted: when do you need to let them know by?

BTW: i asked someone at the school (the person who is mentioned in the waitlist letter) about how many WL candidates were accepted and the person told me 21 were taken, so there's hope for lots of us!

Hey Everyone! Congrats to those who have gotten an acceptance or are on the wait list. I know right now is a crazy time, trying to figure out what school to accept and preparing for wherever you go. I'm a 1st year MECN student and I know last year allnurses was a god sent with waiting for acceptances, making a decision, and preparing for the year. If any of you need some advice on choosing where to go (my choice was complicated by a choice of programs - BS-MSN, MECN type, etc; as well as location, finances, etc). I would say I'm very happy at UCLA. Its a challenging program, but I can't believe this time next year I'll be interviewing and about to start my career as a nurse! Feel free to reply with questions or PM me.

How do the envelopes look like for the waiting list? is it just a small envelope with one letter? for those that did get accepted did everyone get a small or large envelope and were there the 4-5 pages as per the previous post? just wondering if anyone got anything different

I'm on the WL and I got a small envelope with a single piece of paper. goguemah said (i think) that his acceptance included 5 pieces of paper but I dont know what type of envelope it came in

I emailed the person on the letter this afternoon but it was after five so I haven't heard from her. I asked how many people typically decide not to stay on the wait list. I hope it's a lot because that would move me down the list to a lower number.

This whole process has been a lesson in patience........:anbd:

I've been following this thread for awhile now and everyone's stories have been of great help during this stressful decision process!! I've been wait-listed (single digit) for MECN and am extremely anxious to find out whether or not I'll get in. After speaking with administrators, they said the letters of intent are due by 3/18 for accepted students. My guess is that those on the WL will be contacted sometime around that date.

My dilemma is that I've been accepted to Columbia w/ the nurse anesthetist specialty, and I need to decide by 3/21. I know both programs are just so different in terms of what they offer.

- POSITIVES: It's an Ivy League, I'd get a CRNA license, students get to work FT after my 1st year and return for the master's portion

- NEGATIVES: EXPENSIVE, I'd spend my next 4 years in NYC, CRAZY SCHOOL DEBT. I eventually want to work in LA, and still have school debt from another graduate program I went through. So if I went there, I'd graduate in 2015.

On the other hand, UCLA offers an affordable program, is a great university, and I'd get to stay in LA. I've also applied to CSULA, CSUN, MSM, Western, CSULB. I'm pretty sure I didn't get in to CSULA (didn't get an interview.) And haven't heard back from the other schools. AND those of us WL for the MECN program have no guarantees we'll get in :/.

I also have a significant other in LA that I'd like to stay close to. I figure, if I truly want to be a CRNA, I can apply to programs in LA after gaining some work experience. Who knows, I might even change my mind after working as an RN! I feel like talking to fellow nursing students helps SO MUCH. Does anyone have any words of advice?

Dang.. reading all the threads I'm not sure what got me in. I thought it was my healthcare experience, but I guess the whole process is not as simple as that.

Anyways.. are there any GUYS who got accepted? Am I the only guy here? lol

also reppin' men in nursing, goguemah! i wonder if it was a factor for your acceptance/my waitlist. i know that on the record, they're not supposed to give an advantage for it, but i heard lots of admissions committees do for diversity requirements and such
