New nurse jaded preceptor
I thought things would get better but they only got worse. He treats me very badly, breaks protocol all the time and I think he is not a safe practitioner. When I ask him about some of those things he'll respond that he just knows. He'll tell me to just memorize things because he doesn't want to look things up and explain where things are. He berated me for being slow last week after he just let me drown with two med administrations and proceeded to tell me I was delaying pt care, that my coworkers would have to pick up the slack and that no one would want to work with me and I would not last on the unit unless I learned to move faster. I can't stand the sight if him and have three more shifts with him this week. I'm hoping my boss can change my schedule around because I rather quick than have to learn from someone like that

New nurse jaded preceptor
Thank you so much for the advice. I agree. I guess I just don't want to make waves or be 'that person' but he's just too jaded to precept. I agree. Thanks!

New nurse jaded preceptor
I'm a new grad, second career student. I went into nursing for a variety of reasons, one being the clique 'I want to help people.' I'm not naive or stupid and don't expect to change the world but I do want to be kind and compassionate. My preceptor is jaded, tells me all pts who come to the ED want drugs, that nurses for the most part are stupid and that he doesn't care about anyone. If I ask him 'aren't you going to tell that intern he put the chart in the wrong place?' He says 'why? That's not my job. He's just kind of an ass. He's a good teacher but not someone I would be friends with. He wants to come across as a tough guy but all I see is an ass. I'm learning a lot from him so my inclination is to just stick with it for the next six months but he's so jaded. I don't want to start my career off having been taught by someone who's so negative. Advice?

Unsure what to do
The best thing is to call the BON where you live. They'll give you advice. But don't quit nursing just yet. There's plenty if people who are I'm your shoes and can Practice. It may just be a pain but you have to try if you really want to continue nursing!

Failed NCLEX for the 3rd time
Hurst!! And they have a money back guarantee. And if you don't pass (which you will!!) they work with you. It was amazing. If you can do the option where you go to class. I know it's the reason I passed. Best of luck!

Taking a job until I can start this other one...
I agree. Take the job now and then take the VA job when offered. There's plenty of people looking for jobs so they'll find someone - font you worry about that!! Look out for yourself because no one else will

Thought I would have a job by now. Getting depressed
The nursing shortage fluctuates. Right now the shortage is non existent BUT it will get better in terms of jobs. I graduated in May with a BSN and my debt is 6 figures so I'm stressed about that. I'm grateful for the job I got and I know I'm very lucky. My suggestion is to contact people where you all did your capstone clinicals. Contact your instructors and even the SON admin. People can help you just have to ask. I know it's frustrating but it will get better!! Hang in there!! Make those contacts!! Best if luck to y'all
