UCLA MECN Fall 2011

Published

Hello,

I saw that the MECN application for UCLA has been posted today. Is anyone applying to the Fall 2011 program?? I haven't found a thread going on yet...Maybe we can share our questions/concerns regarding the application process here.

Ocennia - I can't reply to your PM yet, but I just wanted to let you know how similar my situation is to yours!!!! So THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your decision process/experience with me. I am truly grateful for your response and words of advice. I will take DEFINITELY be taking them into account.

Dear All:

Hi. I've been reading posts since late last year but have been too stressed to actually join in the conversation.

I received a letter of acceptance on the 7th. I'm probably the person in the program with the least amount of health care experience, as I am a graphic designer.

If interested, I can elaborate on my approach to the application. I just don't want to make anyone feel worse than he/she already may be feeling. But...perhaps could help for the future.

To those of you with whom I will be studying, HELLO! And, I'll see you in Epidemiology over the summer.

Best.

HI Alma Love,

I would definately love to hear stories from those who got in as to what their application looks like. As for me, I am on the waitlist which means just more waiting! Oh well, I will still keep my fingers crossed! Similar to others, I have a ton of healthcare experience, a ton of child life experience volunteering in children's hospitals, work for maternal and child health in the hospitals, created my own health foundation for teens with chronic illnesses, lived in Cambodia doing HIV research for the National Institute of Health and have a Masters in Epidemiology from UCLA with a 3.5 GPA. I honestly have no idea what else I could possibly do. I understand that they are looking for diversity but it is just crushing that I have already dedicated so much of my life to healthcare and to be waitlist is kind of a crush to the ego. But at least it's a waitlist, right?! I will take whatever I can get!

To those of you that are waitlisted, I talked to Jessica yesterday via email and she said that those who were accepted have to decide by the 18th and they will be contacting people on the 19th. At least it is soon and not in May.

To everyone that got in, I know they committee had some hard choices and you all stood out to them out of 700 applications. You definately deserve to celebrate and enjoy this time!!! I hope I will be celebrating with you all in a couple of weeks!

As someone who is planning to apply to UCLA next year, I would absolutely love to hear your approach to your application!

Did you apply to other programs?? Your credentials sound really impressive. I know some people who got rejected to UCLA got into other places like Columbia, UCSF, Penn...who the heck knows why they make the decisions they do but you should apply all over if UCLA does work out. Good luck and keep your head up!

Congrats! I got my acceptance on Monday evening and now I'm stuck between UCLA's MECN and Johns Hopkins Trad BSN program. Make sure you send in your reply! :)

Did you apply anywhere else? I'm not sure what I want to do but I've been definitely considering the factor of $$$. It's 100K for JH and only 40K for UCLA. :/

A question for those who have been accepted: Do you have a math/science background (i.e. BS degree) and healthcare experience such as being a CNA or volunteering at a hospital?

I'm trying to figure out how I can improve my application the next go-around!

I was graduated from UCLA with a 3.2 and a BA in Psych.

All my pre-reqs (except for Phys) have been A's.

I have volunteer work at the hospital, held leadership positions at my volunteering place, shadowed nurse practitioners, and I also volunteer with a nursing professor with her research. I am also working part-time as a caretaker with a Parkinson's patient.

It really helps if you have a lot of experience with hospitals and clinical care. :)

Good luck!

Alma Love,

Congratulations! I would appreciate hearing any insight you may have. I'm still quite devastated and looking for ways to improve my application for next year.

I also want to thank everyone for sharing their stories. I can't tell you how much it encourages me to continue to despite a few bumps in the road.

Hi Sai A,

I applied to USD, CSULA, & CSUF. Made it to the interview part at USD, then got rejected. I'm iffy about CSULA since they began interviewing people last week and I still haven't gotten an invite. I'm not too worried about CSUF since I just turned in my application last week (Yes, I'm a big procrastinator. I have to change that in nursing school! LOL). Since I got accepted to UCLA, I feel more relaxed and very excited. UCLA was my first choice and so it's a blessing to be admitted. And don't worry, I emailed them already to tell them I intent to enroll in the Fall. :)

I guess I'll meet you soon!

Congratulations to everyone who is accepted, I am accepted too whoo, I am so happy, I cried when I opened my envelope. UCLA was my first choice and the first and only school I have applied so far, so I must be super lucky. Looking forward to meeting all of you at Epidemiology class this summer.

Truly sorry for the not accepted ones, I feel for you. Try again with very positive thoughts or move on, may be it is not meant to be. Best of luck in the future, we all are going to be wonderful nurses!!!!

Does anyone know any MECN students who are working while taking classes? If so, how are they handling their load? I'd appreciate it if someone from MECN program could answer my question.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations to those who were accepted! And for those who were not, don't worry too much you will get into a nursing program and become a nurse. I wasn't accepted to UCLA and I have a pretty strong application (3.95 undergrad, all A's in my prereqs, health care volunteer experience). I was accepted to both UCSF (ranked no. 2 to UW) and USF, both excellent schools. So, who knows exactly what UCLA was looking for; I was told my essay was strong and right on point as to why I was ready for nursing. I actually started at USF (MSN-CNL Program) in January and love it! Their applicant pool was very competitive too with over 600 applicants for 30 spots. It was my first choice because it was a private school, started almost a year before the other two and I am currently living in SF. I couldn't be happier, my classmates are great and the faculty is amazing! I am definitely liking the private school atmosphere and yes it costs more, but after graduation and working as a nurse the loans will be paid off pretty quickly. So, the investment is worth it! For those of you that weren't accepted, you will find the right program for you! If you want to be a nurse, you will be. After all when you are going to get a job as a nurse the name of the school isn't as important as what you personally bring to the position (I have been told this by a CNO and Nursing Director in hospitals in both LA and SF).

Good luck to all with your future nursing endeavors!
