Hello,
I saw that the MECN application for UCLA has been posted today. Is anyone applying to the Fall 2011 program?? I haven't found a thread going on yet...Maybe we can share our questions/concerns regarding the application process here.

I am applying to the UCLA program. I started it last night, but already have a ton of questions. I am not sure how the recommendation forms work out. I keep seeing on the nursing website that they are forms to be completed separately, but on the recommendations tab, it says they are to be completed electronically.
I just emailed the MECN coordinator asking if a certain class will count for the communications prerequisite. I would really hate to have to take a speech class.
Im glad im not the only one with questions. I had a chance to email the coordinator regarding the application and letters of recommendation (however, im not sure where the goal statement is listed for the nursing program...). She replied and said:
"It is all one application this year. The recommendation forms will be emailed directly to your recommenders once you fill out their contact information on the online application. "
So looks like the only thing that UCLA needs sent is the transcripts, if I understand correctly.
Do you know anything about the goal statement?

Hi everyone,
I'm applying for fall 2011 as well. Thanks for starting a thread!
As far as the statement of purpose goes, I think we just upload it to the online application right?

Hey all - nice to see a thread started. I agree, the new application isn't the most clear set of instructions I've ever seen! Did you guys go to an info session? The sample application they gave us is helpful, I am assuming we fill out everything they ask for on the sample application and whatever else is on the graduate application? Certain things are unclear, like the directions on how long they want the statement to be, or where to put notes on a pre-req that we plan to complete in the spring. I think we're the guinea pig class for the new online application :)
I have been in contact with the coordinator asking more questions. As for the essay, we are to disregard the graduate application prompt that is listed on the application online. She told me to instead look at the MECN website and under the application tab look at the Evaluation Criteria sheet. Here, it is listed what the statement of purpose should address. She said to answer this question and that it should be 2-3 pages double spaced, and that the format was up to us. Hope this helps answer some questions. Im assuming we upload the nursing goal statement under the supplemental material tab...
Are you guys applying to multiple schools? If so, how did your recommenders respond to the fact that some schools require LOR's on a specific form, UCLA wants it online, another school wants a standard letter, etc... I'm applying to 4 schools total and I'm preparing to meet with my professors next week to request the letters. I'm trying to figure out how to make this as simple for them as possible, but no matter how I arrange it, it still looks very complicated.
Im applying to about 7 schools, which means lots of letters of rec. I have 4 people writing multiple letters. Since every school has a different req for recommendations, I prepared a packet for each person and I printed the forms or instructions with due dates for the letters of rec for each school. As the deadlines approach, I email my recommenders in about a month in advance. They were all very understanding and pleased that I had given them organized instructions for when to submit the letters. Just make the process for them as easy as possible...
Thanks Sam198. It makes me feel better to know that your recommenders were understanding about the whole thing. I can only hope mine will be the same! I'm working to make my packet as organized as possible for them. Thanks for the tips!

Hi, thanks for starting this thread! Does anyone know current or past nursing students who have gotten in? What made their application stand out?
Does anyone know the guidelines for calculating your last 60 semester unit GPA? I know you are supposed to count backwards until you get to 60, but as I count backwards I get to 57 units one semester and then the next semester I get to 72 units.
Not sure exactly - basically they want your jr/sr year GPA. At least that is how it's worded on the application. I would say e-mail the question because your situation seems unclear.
