Hello :)
Anyone else applying for UBC's September 2014 intake? If so, let's get through this process by communicating with each other!
Hello all
I am currently in UBC Kinesiology and this will be my second time applying this year.
I could not really go for any other nursing schools in Canada since UBC is the only nursing school in Canada that accepts international students (If anyone knows more, please let me know! )
Both my mother and my sister are nurses, so I really want to become a nurse as well.
I actually wanted to ask a question for the supplemental application, how many experiences should I list for each question? Is it better to list one and explain in detail, or list 2 or 3 experiences but in less detail?
Anyways, best wishes everyone!
I just put my supplemental in last night! Now the wait begins...
skihan, for experience I have heard it is quality over quantity. Expand on a few things in detail for sure. Also make sure to not put the same experience in different categories.
futurenursecanada, it might be too late but Title would be your references job or role, eg. Bob Smith, (title=)Associate Professor at UBC, or Joan Lee, Team Lead of Accounting.
The only thing that stumped me was the Membership segment, I didn't develop on anything in that, it was just a straight list of what I have belonged to.
Good luck!!
Hi everyone,I am also applying for the 2014 intake. I'm just a little confused because I read on this thread that someone had their transcripts mailed to UBC but I just uploaded mine on my own. I was told by someone from UBC that official transcripts only have to be mailed in if the school asks for them after reviewing our uploaded versions.Do any of you know otherwise? I certainly wouldn't want to be rejected because I didn't mail in official transcripts! I would love to hear what everyone else is doing. Thanks!
Hi Ubuntu14. I have been a bit confused with the transcripts as well, but here is what I have gathered after emailing the admissions office. If you are finished school you will have your school send in an official transcript, eg. if you have a Bachelors degree from University of Alberta, you get U of Alberta to mail UBC an official one. However, I think this only applies if your schooling was not at UBC. I am not sure what the process is if you are or have been a UBC student.
If you are taking any courses in progress, those are the transcripts you can upload, eg. you are taking A&P through Athabasca currently you can upload an interim official transcript.
Hope that helps!
Thanks aje8, unfortunately I still don't understand why they have an option of uploading transcripts and submitting them. I think I will send an E-mail to UBC to find out for sure.
I've completed all the prereqs and am currently working on my masters so all my undergrad transcripts are complete. I'll let you know what I find out.
I just began working on my supplemental-very intersesting application process!
Hi all! I applied for the program at the end of October, but am still working on the supplemental application. Definitely want to get it in right away though. I'm also taking Athabasca's A&P course! I'm a previous Arts student so it's a bit of a new way to learn for me but I'm enjoying it.
Surrealeen, I put my job title and some very basic duties, I'm not sure exactly what they're looking for considering the other experiences part.
It's great to hear that people are submitting or are working on their supplementals! I just submitted mine today - after reading and rereading my answers, and it's good to have that done. Re: job description - yes, I put short description of my duties and responsibilities, sinch this is like the job experience part of the resume. I doubt they expect anything lengthy since there is the word count limit.
I have what might be a silly question. I'm currently taking A&P classes from TRU and UBC is requesting "official interim transcripts." Does anyone know what that might be? I emailed TRU and they said that they only produce "official transcripts" which will only show the two courses as being "in progress" (so it won't have the grades I have so far). I know there's something that I can upload myself - should I be uploading a statement of assignment marks (from the TRU online portal)? Or is this something different altogether? I feel like I'm missing something. I just don't want to have my application not count because I didn't submit something I'm supposed to.
I did email UBC to ask and they will get back to me in a few days. But I wanted to check if anyone had any idea about this?
Anyways - the Jan 30 deadline is coming up! Good luck to all who have applied and are working on their application!
Hi AgathaKitty,
Interim is the word they use for "in progress". I am taking A&P at Athabasca currently and what I was able to do was download an official "interim" transcript (from Athabasca student centre), which has no marks but just says "course in progress", and uploaded it into my UBC student centre. I was worried they need it mailed officially to them, but an adviser got back to me and said that is all they need for now. In my student centre it says they require a FINAL official transcript which will be due before the June 15 cutoff.
Hope that helps!
Oh this waiting is no fun, I already wish I could go in and change some stuff on my supplemental!! I didn't max out my word count (mine were 150-200 words) for each segment but now I am thinking I should have. I definitely put more time and effort into the essay. For the work experience I just put my job title, as I used some of my jobs in the other segments were I expanded on what I learned and experienced working there.
oh ps. its aje8!
It's nice to see a lot of people are in the same boat as me! I'm still working on my supplemental section, but look forward to having everything done so I can just sit back and wait! (ok maybe not looking forward to the wait)
I did my undergrad at UFV in Biology and stayed at UFV to do my anatomy courses. I sent my official transcripts about a week ago, and I believe that they just show that I am registered in the final prereq I need, and then in April I will have to send another transcript showing I've finished! I hope that's right!

Hi futurenursecanada - here is UBC's GPA page: http://students.arts.ubc.ca/advising/academic-performance/gpa-equivalency UBC uses percentages instead of GPA - word is that last year's average was 78%, but that just means there are still some students admitted with grades below and some above that. I'm not sure what your school uses as a GPA scale, but do you know the percentage?
With regards to the supplementary portion, I wouldn't worry about what you don't have, but rather emphasize the things that you do have. For sure health related activities are a huge bonus, but I'm guessing the UBC just wants to know that you are passionate, committed, involved in the community in some way and have good reasons to go into nursing.
But I'm still only working on my on application, so I'm really not an expert!
Thoughts:
Working with others - I'm thinking they want to know if you have worked in a team environment on a project, or if you have experience working with the public? Not sure though.
Hobbies/interest - I would be honest and describe what your interests are. They probably want to know more about you.
