Great article, I would love to eventually work in L&D!
  2. Also received my rejection, so you're not alone Swaybe. I don't have a ton of volunteer experience working with others in the way lots of you successful applicants have. Most of my experience is with my undergrad Geology club/ Alumni Geology club organizing conferences and networking events. My working experience has been at a big oil company for the last 3 years. Not very "caring" related at all. However one thing I am really confused and hoping someone could clear this up... my gpa in my last 30 credits is 3.82, and in the email they sent it said that my gpa translates to an 80.3%? Does this seem right? I thought it would be more like an 85%.
  3. I still have hope. Looking at the last year's forum it seems they were sent out Monday/Tuesday, then there were none and then a whole bunch more on Thursday/Friday.. this is honestly the worst though! My heart rate races everytime I get a new email!
  4. Good to know there are other people in this boat of choosing where to go to school/where you want to live in the future. I know for Alberta, AHS has a mandate to have 70% of new hires from Alberta graduates. Not sure if other provinces have this as well. I will be looking into it further when we hear from UBC, since my heart is set on going there but my mind says stay in Calgary.
  5. This is so exciting! Good luck to everyone. Let's check back in at the end of March... which seems devastingly far away right now!
  6. Hi AgathaKitty, Interim is the word they use for "in progress". I am taking A&P at Athabasca currently and what I was able to do was download an official "interim" transcript (from Athabasca student centre), which has no marks but just says "course in progress", and uploaded it into my UBC student centre. I was worried they need it mailed officially to them, but an adviser got back to me and said that is all they need for now. In my student centre it says they require a FINAL official transcript which will be due before the June 15 cutoff. Hope that helps! Oh this waiting is no fun, I already wish I could go in and change some stuff on my supplemental!! I didn't max out my word count (mine were 150-200 words) for each segment but now I am thinking I should have. I definitely put more time and effort into the essay. For the work experience I just put my job title, as I used some of my jobs in the other segments were I expanded on what I learned and experienced working there. oh ps. its aje8!
  7. Hi Ubuntu14. I have been a bit confused with the transcripts as well, but here is what I have gathered after emailing the admissions office. If you are finished school you will have your school send in an official transcript, eg. if you have a Bachelors degree from University of Alberta, you get U of Alberta to mail UBC an official one. However, I think this only applies if your schooling was not at UBC. I am not sure what the process is if you are or have been a UBC student. If you are taking any courses in progress, those are the transcripts you can upload, eg. you are taking A&P through Athabasca currently you can upload an interim official transcript. Hope that helps!
  8. I just put my supplemental in last night! Now the wait begins... skihan, for experience I have heard it is quality over quantity. Expand on a few things in detail for sure. Also make sure to not put the same experience in different categories. futurenursecanada, it might be too late but Title would be your references job or role, eg. Bob Smith, (title=)Associate Professor at UBC, or Joan Lee, Team Lead of Accounting. The only thing that stumped me was the Membership segment, I didn't develop on anything in that, it was just a straight list of what I have belonged to. Good luck!!
  9. Thanks agathakitty. I live in Calgary so that sounds pretty similar. I am not sure if I would come to live in Vancouver alone or if my boyfriend and dog would come too. We own a house in Calgary so it might be a bit complicated, but I will cross that bridge if/when I come to it. Anybody send in their supplemental yet? I see they have received my HS and U of C transcripts, so that is good. I am taking A&P at Athabasca U, so I want to wait until I write my first exam to send in that transcript so there is at least something for them to see on it.
  10. Thanks for all the info veggie_girl!! How do you find living expenses in Vancouver? Can you find affordable places to rent that are near the university?
  11. I really appreciate everyone's responses and it has given me plenty of food for thought. In terms of grades.. I have an honours degree with a GPa of 3.6/4. Where I live (Canada) to get into med school you need above a 3.8. There are 1800 applicants at my local university and they take 120. I have searched more about OT's and PA, but I still like the idea of becoming a nurse and eventually a NP. I am absolutely crazy for mountain biking and skiing and would love to live in a mountain town. Becoming a nurse would allow me to live in these places and make good money. I am not sure there would be as many positions for OT's and PA's there. BUT I am not basing my decision to become a nurse purely on the fact I can live in a small mountain town.. it is just one of the benefits. Again, thanks everyone.
  12. I just want to add, I am quite sure I would go on to become a nurse practitioner if I choose nursing. Would have liked to get into med school but my grades aren't up to snuff. And I am a female btw. I like the idea of a paramedic.. I don't think the pay is as good as nursing though. I will check it out. Is a PA a physician's assistant? This is really ringing true for me..
  13. Currently I am a geologist, and I work in a big fancy office for a big oil company. I sit in front of a computer Mon-Fri 8-5. I go for coffee breaks, and workout at lunch. It is pretty easy. I get stressed when there are deadlines or presentations, but other than that it is pretty stress-free. I am close to making 6 figures in my 3rd year out of university. Sounds pretty awesome right?? But I am totally miserable. I have no passion for it. It bores me to tears. The thought of working here for the rest of my life makes me want to jump off the 30th floor. Geology is different in that there are no right answers and you are making stuff up and then presenting it as if it were the absolute truth. I really don't like that. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I have been racking my brain for the past 2 years on what I might like to do instead. Discovering nursing has been like a light going on in my brain, but I am still unsure if (what I think are) my needs and the nursing profession will be a right fit. Here they are: I want to be doing something different and exciting everyday, no sitting around and surfing the internet out of boredom. I am an extrovert and am energized by my relationships with others. I think it is totally awful that I am sitting 8-9 hours per day, sitting in the car, sitting on the couch at home.. even though I work out regularly I don't think humans are meant for this much sitting. I want a career where I am doing something meaningful (ie. NOT finding oil in the ground) I want to use my brain... I am a science geek. I always want people to be comfortable and happy, and if I had a career doing that I think that would be amazing. I have always been interested in healthcare, I initially wanted to be a doctor but my dreams of getting into medical school are long gone now. I've looked into phyisotherapy and occupational therapy as well. I want the opportunity to work anywhere. Monotony freaks me out. What I am hoping to get with this post is some honest feedback from those who are nurses. It is greatly appreciated :)
  14. Hi Everyone! I am 90% sure I am going to apply for UBC Sept 2014. I have been a geologist for 3 years but I won't go into the details of why I want to take nursing. Anyway, I live in Calgary and own a home here so it makes more sense for me to go to U of C but I really really want to live in Vancouver! I just need to take Athabasca's Biol 235 course and that will cover my pre-reqs. I am signing up for it ASAP. I don't know if I will have good enough supplementals, but I am going to try anyway. I have quite a bit of volunteering, especially during University but none of it is nursing related in the slightest. My GPa is about 3.8, so I hope that will cover the grades end. I am also applying at U of C, but that doesn't open until July 2014 so by then I will know if I get into UBC or not.
