UBC BSN September 2018 Applicants

Published

Hello fellow applicants!

I was browsing and did not see a thread for the 2018 UBC BSN applicants so thought I'd start one.

I am just finishing up my supplemental nursing application and hope to finish my application by the end of today and have already submitted my transcript. Just wanted to know who else is applying/GPA/past experiences with UBC/any tips or information for the application anyone wishes to share.

A bit about myself.. I am currently an LPN working at a hospital and also work part-time in retail in a leadership role, I do not have a Bachelor's degree but am applying anyways (hoping my supplemental weighs heavy in my favour). I have a GPA of 3.55 and will have ~30 credits at the end of this Fall term. I have some volunteer experience working with companies during their charity campaigns and am hoping to do more volunteer work this year. I will also be applying to BCIT, Langara and Queen's University once their applications open up.

Good luck to everyone and please share any information you're able too!

Hi tdmah!

Thanks for your insight! I do have a few questions for you, being a 2018 applicant myself. I'm from Ontario so the move to Vancouver will be huge. In terms of where to live, where do you think will be the most convenient? On campus? I'm thinking clinical could be anywhere, but I really don't want to be commute all day, everyday. Any insight? Also, do you have names of any landlords i could get in touch with? It's been a real challenge looking for housing. Also, I see that clinical can be either Tuesday/Wednesday or Saturday/Sunday. Do students get to choose which day they want? How is your schedule determined? I've been accepted to other nursing schools, but I'm really attracted to BC! Tell me all you can about student life etc :) THANK YOU!!

hi lilies1234

Yes I am a degree holder. I have my degree as a double major in Business and Leadership.

Thank you for your compliments! not sure how this year will turn out.. Yah I was pretty disappointed last year but I can only move forward. Yes you can still be in the top 25 and not make it as they only accept 120 students I believe.

Hey guys! I too am currently a student in UBC's Nursing program that is more than happy to answer any questions that you all may have about the admission process and about the program :) I am one of the peer support coordinators and would love to connect with all of you coming in September about how to prepare for the program as we get closer to that time. You likely will be finding out in about two weeks (I believe April 27th was the day last year). Cheers! (and try not to stress about it too much, you'll have the next two years to stress about nursing school!)

Hi no-scrubs! I'm not in the program yet either (the wait is hard!), but I do live in Vancouver already as my wife is in school doing her master's up at UBC. We found a place by searching Craigslist like crazy people, honestly. Ended up with a great basement suite in Kerrisdale! I recommend searching property management sites (re/max has one, also sutton and sunstar realty I believe) as well as calling apartment companies like caprent.com. It's hard work finding a place but if you keep at it you'll find something! We are about a 10 miute drive from UBC or about 30 mins on the bus, depending where at UBC you are going. Good luck! Feel free to message me if you need help! :)

I would recommend looking for places in Kitsilano, Dunbar, Kerrisdale, or around Cambie/Broadway. They're all a bit more central but are within a 30ish minute bus ride to UBC. If you view UBC on a map, you'll notice it's actually quite out of the way. If you get placed at VCH, Richmond, Surrey, etc, it's a bit nicer to live more central. I live in Kitsilano and couldn't be happier! It's close to the beach, has amazing restaurants, and only takes 20 minutes to get to UBC by bus. I would suggest looking on Craigslist and Kijiji for rentals.

Clinical in first semester was either Tuesday/Wednesday or Saturday/Sunday, and it was really luck of the draw. There were 10 options (ex. UBC Hospital Tuesday/Wednesday, UBC Hospital Saturday/Sunday, VCH Tuesday/Wednesday, etc, etc), and you ranked your preferences from 1-10 online. The website worked its magic and gave us all a placement. I was lucky and got my #1. Some of my friends were not lucky and got their #9 or #10. It's completely random and you just have to sort of go with it.

Everyone is going to have a different experience, but I am personally enjoying this program immensely. I've made friends that I know I will have for life, and we've laughed and cried together through the best and worst times. Although the program is tough (like... very tough), we still have enough time for self care, and we definitely indulge from time-to-time! Being a part of the NUS has also been great and I recommend looking into it if you'd like to be more involved. :)

I have a question about the teaching & lab sessions on campus the first semester. It looks like you have two full days of lectures.

And then two days for simulation lab? Are those drop or just one morning or afternoon or are you there all day for both days?

Yeah, so it is kind of hard to understand if you just look at the calendar. For the first 3 weeks of our first semester, we had simulation labs or going through different scenarios. We were assigned in one of 4 (or 5) different time slots, like there's groups at 8:30-10:30, next is at 11-1...etc. Those days, you only have to be at campus for whatever time slot you're assigned to. For example, if you are assigned 8:30-10:30 lab group, you only have that lab day so you can come to campus at 8:30 and leave at 10:30 because you're done for the day! I think it says 8am-6pm because that's the time when all the labs are running. But for all three weeks, you had to come for that same time slot (so every Tues, Weds, Fri for 3 wks) and once/wk (Fri for our cohort) from 4th to the end of the term.

Thank you for explaining that. I really appreciate it

Hi,

Does anyone know if the supplemental application is to be completed in full sentences, for example "i attended school in _____ from this year to that year" or is a point form version acceptable?

I can only speak for myself, and for the most part I treated the supplemental as mini essays. In the employment section I used very brief and succinct sentences due to the very limited character count, and I used some point form in the education section when listing certificates. But I have no idea if that is the general consensus. Are you applying for next year or have you applied for this year's intake?

Has anyone heard from UBC yet? The wait feels so long!

Hi All!

I am sure we are all anxiously awaiting our results. I have read back on this thread and it sounds like everyone is more than qualified! It has been very interesting to read about everyone's experiences.

Does anyone know how UBC calculates the GPA? I haven't found a clear rubric - I graduated from U of A and they used a 4.0 scale, we did not receive percentages as final grades.
