Hello fellow applicants!
I was browsing and did not see a thread for the 2018 UBC BSN applicants so thought I'd start one.
I am just finishing up my supplemental nursing application and hope to finish my application by the end of today and have already submitted my transcript. Just wanted to know who else is applying/GPA/past experiences with UBC/any tips or information for the application anyone wishes to share.
A bit about myself.. I am currently an LPN working at a hospital and also work part-time in retail in a leadership role, I do not have a Bachelor's degree but am applying anyways (hoping my supplemental weighs heavy in my favour). I have a GPA of 3.55 and will have ~30 credits at the end of this Fall term. I have some volunteer experience working with companies during their charity campaigns and am hoping to do more volunteer work this year. I will also be applying to BCIT, Langara and Queen's University once their applications open up.
Good luck to everyone and please share any information you're able too!
Yeah, so it is kind of hard to understand if you just look at the calendar. For the first 3 weeks of our first semester, we had simulation labs or going through different scenarios. We were assigned in one of 4 (or 5) different time slots, like there's groups at 8:30-10:30, next is at 11-1...etc. Those days, you only have to be at campus for whatever time slot you're assigned to. For example, if you are assigned 8:30-10:30 lab group, you only have that lab day so you can come to campus at 8:30 and leave at 10:30 because you're done for the day! I think it says 8am-6pm because that's the time when all the labs are running. But for all three weeks, you had to come for that same time slot (so every Tues, Weds, Fri for 3 wks) and once/wk (Fri for our cohort) from 4th to the end of the term.
Ok, so can you confirm that I understand this? í ½í¸‚
So the first three weeks:
Monday classes from 9-4
Tuesday classes 9-4
Wednesday lab at your lab time ie. 11-1pm
Thursday lab at your lab time
Friday classes 9-4
Weekend free
Then when clinical starts:
Monday class 9-4
Tuesday class 9-4
If you choose wed/thurs clinical:
Wednesday clinical (hours? 8-4?)
Thursday clinical (hours?)
Friday class (9-4)
Weekend free (unless you do weekend clinical in which case Wednesday and Thursday would be your free days)
Is this right? I am so confused now!
If a current student could give us an idea of their current schedule that would be great!

Hey, westlife1,
I'm not sure which schedule you're referring to so I'll use an example from our cohort's last September schedule (Term 1).
So last September (2017) for first 3 weeks: (with an assumption that lab was at 8:30-10:30)
Monday: 9-4 Tues, Weds: 8:30-10:30 lab, Thurs: 9-4, Fri: 8:30-10:30 lab.
From 4th wk, an example with Tues, Weds Clinical:
Monday: 9-4, Tues, Weds: around 6:45-3pm (depends on every clinical group but generally 7am-3pm), Thurs: 9-4, Fri: 8:30-10:30 lab.
If Clinical was Sat, Sunday, you got Tues and Weds off but same time on Sat, Sun around 6:30/7am-3pm.
For term 3 that we start from next week, some of us have 2x12hr shift while the others have 3x8hr shifts. The only thing that I personally know about term 3 right now is that we have class Mon, Tues from 9-4pm and have labs for 1st 2wks. I'm not sure what our lab schedule is going to be from the 3rd week since we haven't started the term yet. I hope that helped to answer your question :)
Thank you so much - that makes a lot more sense! The sample schedule really wasn't clear.
How are you liking the program now that you've been in for a little while? How are clinicals going? Are you already administering meds, doing IVs etc? I'm curious about how fast they move you along from observing student to actually performing care on your own.
Anyone know what date we'll be notified?
Sorry for the super late reply! It has been a busy couple of weeks and we just started our third semester. As far as the program goes, I really like it overall. It has its flaws just like any other program though. They changed the curriculum and structure of the program for our cohort but I think they plan on changing it back to the old curriculum - which is great news for you guys. It's super super busy and definitely advantageous if you're organised and can manage your time really well. That being said, I think making a solid group of friends is really helpful. I really love clinical and have had great placements and clinical instructors. It is going by so fast!
As far as my education history goes, I have an honors degree in neuroscience from the University of Alberta (I did not have a 4.0 so don't worry about that). I have a lot of volunteer experience with various organisations: a long term care facility, volunteering with elephants in Asia, a women's resource centre, women in science and engineering organisation, health and wellness centre, brain care centre, science camps for kids, guiding hiking trips, and others. I have worked as a server, dance teacher, landscaper, and forest firefighter. I also did competitive Irish dancing for about 18 years! So not necessarily medical or health related but a wide variety of experiences. I think that is key for UBC - they seem to take people from a wide variety of backgrounds. :)
Last year I heard it was the last Friday in April so I'm guessing it will be April 27th for us....this week is going to be a roller coaster! I haven't heard how many applicants there are, not sure I want to know but at the same time am also very curious! Good luck to everyone this week and hope we can keep some emotional balance with all this anticipation :)

Thank you so much for all the info! May you shed a little light on what holidays/breaks look like - from the schedules posted on UBC's website I have a general idea:
Term 1) First Tuesday of September - Last Friday in November/First Friday in December - then exams
*when was your last exam/how long was your Christmas break?*
Term 2) Approx January 3rd - Approx 3rd Friday in February
*week off for reading week*
Last Monday of February - Thursday before Good Friday
*week off for term break*
Term 3) Last Monday of April - Second last Friday in July - then exams
*do you know when your last exam will be/how long your summer break will be before returning in September?*
Term 4) More or less repeat of Term 1
Term 5) Approx January 3rd - Finish practicum/finish course end of April
*when are you meant actually graduate?*
Sorry, I'm an excessive planner lol :)

Hey! If I remember correctly, we had about 3weeks off between 1st and the 2nd term (in December). Then for summer, we have entire August off. For graduation, the actual graduation date is going to be in May I believe. Hope that helps!

I found a few conversion tables,
ie. GPA/% Equivalency | Arts Undergraduate Students
And from what I read it is the last 10 undergraduate courses, and if there are more the same semester when counting back, it is the average grade of that semester used to calculate the remaining ones. That might not make total sense...
