UBC BSN September 2018 Applicants

Published

Hello fellow applicants!

I was browsing and did not see a thread for the 2018 UBC BSN applicants so thought I'd start one.

I am just finishing up my supplemental nursing application and hope to finish my application by the end of today and have already submitted my transcript. Just wanted to know who else is applying/GPA/past experiences with UBC/any tips or information for the application anyone wishes to share.

A bit about myself.. I am currently an LPN working at a hospital and also work part-time in retail in a leadership role, I do not have a Bachelor's degree but am applying anyways (hoping my supplemental weighs heavy in my favour). I have a GPA of 3.55 and will have ~30 credits at the end of this Fall term. I have some volunteer experience working with companies during their charity campaigns and am hoping to do more volunteer work this year. I will also be applying to BCIT, Langara and Queen's University once their applications open up.

Good luck to everyone and please share any information you're able too!

Hey!

I am working on my supplemental for UBC 2018 currently. I will have a BEd in Elementary Education from the U of A by this December, and will have around a 3.5 GPA by graduation. I'm really hoping that my supplemental will carry me a bit too - I've volunteered at two of the hospitals in the area for almost a year, have spent a year working on a public health initiative (through Alberta Health Services) that is for kids age 7 - 13 who are above a healthy weight, have been a lifeguard in a busy rec centre and dealt with lots of medical emergencies for over 5 years.... Hopefully I'll be able to relate all of this back to nursing and convey my passion through my letter.

Can anyone speak to how they view GPA vs. supplemental? Also hoping that I do well on the CASPer!

Hi Maadddyy, I believe it is 60% gpa and 40% supplemental from their 2015 admission pdf presentation. They did not mention how they are weighed in the for the latest pdf presentations.

I am also an applicant for the nursing program for this September. I graduated from UBC Bkin in 2014. I have been working as a behaviour interventionist for kids with autism for 3 years for kids aged from 4 to 17, with various behavioural and physical conditions. Other than that, I also worked as a personal trainer on the side. I am volunteering as a first aider through the ambulance services. I am hoping to become an ER nurse later on! According to the last 30 UBC credits, I have around 4.3 GPA.

Best wishes to all of us!

Thanks for starting this thread!

I will be applying at UBC for this fall as well, and feel a mix of excitement and some trepidation at the thought of moving to Vancouver for nearly 2 years (if accepted)...

I have a BA in Gender Studies and Cultural Anthropology, and completed my MPH a couple years ago with a focus on Indigenous health. I have experience as a personal care assistant, OFA-3 (industrial medic) for 7 years, in healthcare systems evaluation with a health authority (primarily in assessing organizational Indigenous cultural competency) and in health research within First Nations communities across BC.

I live in a smaller, rural town so it has been hard to find consistent work that isn't contract based. I also realized how much I like the more direct, one-on-one care when working in FN communities, so that is a big reason I have decided to go back to school for the BSN. My GPA is around 3.6-7, thanks to some distance courses I took for fun, haha.... and since my grad courses don't count :( so I hope that doesn't diminish any competitive edge too much.

I haven't started my supplemental yet and I have just started my prereq through TRU Open learning, BIOL 1593. I'm also looking at doing some more volunteering to add to my experience and resume.

Looking forward to getting to know you all better over the course of this year! Best of luck to everyone.

Hey guys! I'm currently in the UBC BSN Program-just started in September! Let me know if you have any questions about the admissions process or program! :)

Thank you knchilton10! That's very kind :) I am working on my supplemental and I will definitely have some questions for you. Congratulations on your acceptance and I hope the first month has been going well for you. How are you finding the program so far?

I love the program! It is a lot of work, but manageable if it is what you want to do! You get into clinical right away (which is great), and actually spend little time in class which is nice! I do have weekend clinical which isn't my preference, but it is something you get used to! All in all, I'm very glad I entered the program! Let me know if you have anymore questions!

hello everyone!!

I've completed my second year in the united states in a nursing school and am currently taking a break in school to apply to UBC and other schools' nursing programs

I was wondering if UBC prefers us to already have a bachelor's degree or pursuing a different major while studying in university.

thanks so much!

Hey everyone! I was emailed this week to re-submit my transcripts (already had but that's cool) and notified to book my CASPer assessment! Eeek! I'm thinking of booking it for January since I will not be in school or have any other commitments. Anyone else?

Glad to see a current student experiencing the new revised curriculum! I asked this on the 2017 thread before I saw you were here :)

"Are you on campus 9-4 on Mondays & Thursdays as the schedule says? And are the lab days full days or part days?

Is any of the academic work done online from home or is it all in class?

And the clinicals are listed 4 days a week?! Is that just to indicate *possible* days and you do 2 clinicals a week out of those 4 or are you doing 4/week?"

Thanks for answering our questions!

Hello! Yes we have class 9-4 on Monday and Thursday, lab for 2 hours on friday, and two 8 hour clinical shifts either tuesday/wednesday, or saturday/sunday! All of our lectures are done in class but obviously work is done from home too! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

I'm just glad to see that you're not too fried to be participating on message boards. So there's a chance of some life balance in the program :yeah:

Last question is more about the location of clinical placements. Are RCH or anything else closer to Coq a possibility? I used to live in res at UBC but that's not an option for me now so the commute is a bit scary.
