UBC BSN September 2018 Applicants

Published

Hello fellow applicants!

I was browsing and did not see a thread for the 2018 UBC BSN applicants so thought I'd start one.

I am just finishing up my supplemental nursing application and hope to finish my application by the end of today and have already submitted my transcript. Just wanted to know who else is applying/GPA/past experiences with UBC/any tips or information for the application anyone wishes to share.

A bit about myself.. I am currently an LPN working at a hospital and also work part-time in retail in a leadership role, I do not have a Bachelor's degree but am applying anyways (hoping my supplemental weighs heavy in my favour). I have a GPA of 3.55 and will have ~30 credits at the end of this Fall term. I have some volunteer experience working with companies during their charity campaigns and am hoping to do more volunteer work this year. I will also be applying to BCIT, Langara and Queen's University once their applications open up.

Good luck to everyone and please share any information you're able too!

I'm getting antsy! Has anyone heard if their references have been contacted?

Hi everyone! I am currently a UBC nursing student and figured I would offer some insight and help answer any questions. Last year I found out I got in on April 27 and was in the first round of offers. I'm assuming this year will be roughly around the same time. I remember how nerve-wracking the process is but even if you don't get an offer in the first round there's still a chance! In fact, last year they offered everyone on the wait list a spot and then had to accept people they had originally rejected because there were some spots that had to be filled. It totally depends on the pool of applicants and other circumstances. As far as the Casper goes, I ran out of time for many of the questions and still got in so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I also did not have excellent grades but had a lot of volunteer, work, and life experience. I think a good supplemental goes a long ways. I am not entirely sure what they look for or how much each aspect is weighed. However, I think it's safe to say UBC takes a huge variety of applicants and I think they probably appreciate individuals who are well rounded and are unique. I believe last year there were around 600 applicants if my memory serves me correctly. Good luck! Very exciting times ahead!

It seems that it is around 20 to 25 percent chance of us getting in, which is really not too bad! At least we have it a lot better than pre med guys. Hahaha

I would be interested to know whether the 600 applicants include the ones that simply registered to apply but did not necessarily complete the supplemental, or meet the pre req requirements, or whether it is 600 applicants that finished the supplemental and had legitimate pre req courses in addition too.

Regardless, lets hope April goes by quickly for all of us.

I have that same questions! I'm choose to think that the 600 includes all applicants, whether they meet all the criteria or not haha. And my references have not been contacted, nor have 2 other friends' that i know

Hi everyone been following this post for awhile. I applied last year and got rejected. I had a very strong supplemental. I have 8 plus years working as a Health Care Aide in facility, acute, residential and palliative and long term care settings. my grades were pretty good. I scored well on the Casper and even had volunteer experience at a major hospital. when talking to Admissions last year I was told the 600 applicants were those who finished the application from beginning to end. in my rejection letter I was informed that I was in the top 25%. To me it did not feel that way as I didn't even make the waitlist. Last year April 27th was the day I found out. They let you know how you scored in terms of gpa, casper, supplemental give you a break down.

This year I upped my volunteering and completed some personal goals and tried again. Although after being rejected once I am terrified to get rejected again by UBC.

I sincerely wish everyone here good luck and I am here with you anxiously awaiting any news.

Thanks for sharing that with us, though it sure does make me nervous! Can I ask you if you are a degree holder, and what your formal education looks like? That's very surprised to hear that you were in the top 25% for all categories yet didn't get an offer. I am hopeful that this year things go differently for you. It seems like your experience has set you up to be a phenomenal nurse.

Hi Everyone! I'm a current student in the UBC Nursing program (2017-2019) and I look forward to meeting many of you in August! I can sympathize with you all - the waiting game is the worst. I remember this time last year, checking my email 10 times a day even though I knew acceptances/rejections wouldn't be going out until the end of April. With that being said, since I have moved to Vancouver and started the program, time has FLOWN by. It's amazing to think that first year is coming to an end and we'll be welcoming the incoming cohort in just a few short months!

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask! I'll do my best to answer them (although my responses might be delayed since finals are next week). I'm also the Executive Vice President of the Nursing Undergraduate Society (NUS) so I can answer questions about getting more involved with the NUS and other things. :)

Best of luck to you all!

Thanks for that info, that's really kind of you to be a resource for us! I'm wondering if you could comment on your previous experience that you had that you applied with? Community involvement, education or work history?

I completed my BSc in 2016 with a good GPA. My work experience included 2 years at a University and 1 year in the provincial government. I volunteered for a sexual health clinic for 2 years, Canadian Blood Services for 1 year, in a Tanzanian hospital for 5 weeks, and as a Peer Mentor in my undergraduate degree for 2 years. I also co-founded a non-profit charity organization (animal rescue). With all this being said, my friends in the program have completely different backgrounds. Some had minimal volunteer experience but lived abroad for a year. Some had only finished 2-3 years of their first undergrad degree. So if you don't have a ton of work experience, volunteer experience, or your GPA isn't that high, don't worry. Hopefully you highlighted your strengths in your application and the admissions team will see that :)

The waiting game is so hard right now!! I feel like I have a great chance but I also realize not every qualified individual can get in. Question: Were admission letters by email only? And once you were admitted, what we're the next steps? Did you have things that had to be completed prior to September?

Thanks!!!

Hey! I can totally understand the anxiety. I was like that last year April as well! In regard to admission letter, if I remember correctly, it is sent by email only. After you get admitted, there are some paperworks, criminal record check, CPR certifying and others. If you want to know more about what needs to be done after admission, FAQ section in UBC website has more detailed explanation about it.

Hey guys! I'm also a 2018 applicant! Has anyone heard back yet?
