U of C Degree holder/Transfer Route Nursing Jan 2016

Published

Hey everyone,

The applications haven't started yet for University of Calgary, degree holder, January 2016 but I wanted to make this so we can all suffer through the application process together!

Post your questions here!

They must look at the value of your degree because my gpa is higher but I have a fine arts degree. Definitely less relevant to nursing than biopharmaceuticals! Hopefully all of us waiting will hear back soon!!

Congratulations soorieh!!! That's very exciting! I'm also waiting… It's brutal, as so many decisions have to be made, depending if I get in or not… I really hope I'll meet all of you in January!

soorieh, before you got accepted, did it say that you were on a waiting list?

@mainnurse I do hope you get in, and no I wasn't on a waiting list, it went from green dot to check mark, but when you clicked on the status of admission before, it did say that the admissions committee have reviewed your file and are waiting to make a decision. Trust me, I had completely written this off, I've started a respiratory therapy program, paid tuition and everything. Now I have to pick up and move provinces in two months time. Crazy stuff

Congratulations @soorieh! I thought that respiratory therapists get better pay n job satisfaction? Just wondering why you would want to move over to nursing? By the way, I'm happy that you want to be a nurse.

Hey @youngjames, the pay is actually no different at the beginning. However, RT actually caps out at about $40/hr and Nurse over the years caps out at $60/hr, and I don't believe that factors in certifications and advancement. Regardless, I'm not in it for the money, yes it is a factor but I'm choosing nursing because of the promotional capacities, the ability to move up and make more of yourself. I think I would be a better nurse over an RT. My end goal is to be in the OR, I would like to become a first assistant nurse, I also enjoy the fact that there are a lot more options for you in comparison to RT.

@soorieh, I totally understand now....Thanks for the information. Welcome on board.

Got accepted into the BN after-degree program! I think it paid off to call admissions and inquire about my application status because about an hour after I left a message with nursing admissions, I got the green check mark! Maybe a coincidence but either way it's good news! Excited to see all of you in January :geek:

Congratulations jayjan!

Does anyone know how many spots are still available?

Hi ipascu it looks like there's 31 of the 104 spots left.

Hi jayjan, congratulations!!!! Do you mind me asking what's your GPA??? And when you called admissions, what did you ask them?? I'm sorry for asking this, it's just that I'm a really desperate… the wait is brutal… Thanks a lot!

Pardon me, what? Where exactly will you be paid $60 an hour as a nurse? Alberta currently pays Step 9 (minimum 8 complete years' service at full time) $46.96 an hour and that's the highest rate in the country. Those who can prove they've been a registered nurse for 20 years or more get 2% on top of that. A long way from $60 an hour, even if you add night and weekend shift differentials.
