I've had several teachers send kids up for vision screens, saying the student has been squinting and having trouble reading.
UMMM....
Could it possibly be because NONE of the classrooms in my school keep their lights on?!?
They say it's to help calm the students. Even in the cafeteria.
I'm sorry but maybe your kid is squinting because the only source of light they have to read by is the small amount coming through the window. Not even a lamp in a lot of the rooms.
I was always taught (by my Momma, not nursing school) that reading in the dark is bad on your eyes.
Does anyone else's school do this?
(Admins please do not put on Facebook :))

Not my schools. Seriously? This sounds like a crazy idea to me to leave the lights off. No wonder they can't see.
I don't think I've been in a single room where the lights are on. C'mon now! Even our office lights are off with just two little can lights on.
I just can't understand it, I feel like it's bad for the kids eyes.

Sounds like a cost saving measure to me. I prefer low light, but I am a night person.

They do that here in many of the classroom.
I'm embarrassed to say, I've never considered it as a reason to not see, but yea... it very well could be the reason!

I have not heard of turning the lights off to calm the kids, but there are filters (kind of like a thin sheet) that some special ed classrooms use that is supposed to help calm the kids, but they are very expensive.
I mean why turn the lights out when you can just use essential oils?
Would they be doubly calm with both?

Lights out and a little Peppermint oil going....sounds like Heaven!!
On a serious note, the only times I see our classrooms with the lights out is at movie time.

I turn the lights out in my office, if there's no student. I get migraines easily, but this is ridiculous. Send the teacher a "classroom prescription" for a lamp to use x hours daily.
Or Vodka.
Between the no lights and the making "bad" kids sit out or walk laps instead of having recess... I may lose it this year.
I've already confronted an instructional assistant for mistreating a (freaking adorable) kindergartener with known condition. I told her (among other things) "He probably doesn't respond well to being screamed at. I know I don't respond well to him being screamed at."
