I am a tech in a urology floor, I have had my ups and down and made my intention to transfer floor known to my HR and director. I agreed to work until the end of the current schedule. On 25th December, the Xmas decorations are already being taking down and hanging in the nursing station are socks filled with candy with dr names. Walking the hall way I saw a nurse with unit secretary eating candy and taking it away from the socks and I joined the party. They had pen in them and being in nursing school, I went hunting for the pens. We shared the candy among some nurses and kids that came visiting the patients. I took some candy for any kid I see and I honestly don't eat them at all.
Fast forward to 30th dec, rumors started that they are about to fire some worker for stealing candies and I was shook. I said I took some cos I didn't know it belongs to any and decoration are already being taken down and candy was inside the Xmas socks.
Called the HR this morning and he said " your manger said you can't transfer cos they caught you camera stealing candy, you need to settle that because is a big problem".
I dont even even know how to defend my actions, the nurse with me has gone to face panel about this and tomorrow they wil call me. How can I explain being fired over candy???
off on a tangent - anyone remember when they used to have separate dining rooms for the physicians? Like does anyplace still have them?
Yes, separate dining room with a much nicer spread (and better coffee) than the regular cafeteria, in fact. PAs and NPs aren't allowed (nor are med students, but I think residents are), but sometimes the docs they work with sneak them in.
At the other hospital in town, the call rooms also have mini-fridges stocked with snacks, water, and soda. Docs only, though - call rooms are not for the NPs, even though they take night call also.
Oh my gosh, you got caught on camera diverting candy? Did they check your glucose and do you have to self report? Did anyone report that you had gummy bear breath? For shame, and for the next three years you will probably have to undergo random glucose testing and attend twice daily, candy eaters anonymous meetings.

It's not disgusting. Candy Media is an unappreciated art form. Although I'll admit that I cannot tell the difference between male and female gummi's so I don't know if it's gay candy Media or not. It doesn't really matter as to each their own but one cannot truly know the nuances of the art form without being able to recognize it for what it is. Like Justice Stewart said all those years ago you "know it when you see it" in relationship to Media, art & obscenity. Surely this is art...
What a bunch of entitled jerks thinking of firing someone for "stealing" candy that was in Christmas stockings for decorations. If they didn't want anyone to take it, they should have said something when they first put it out.
It's just a power trip for them, and it all plays into petty office politics. I'd look for another job if you can. Jerks like that will just find something else petty to write you up for.
People like them are the reason I work in home health, so I don't have to deal with stupid workplace politics or coworkers (and because I have social anxiety).

The last hospital I worked at had separate dining rooms for Dr's and all of us 'unwashed masses.' This was in 2015 and a hospital in a large, urban area. I peeked in once when a Dr. was coming out and it looked like they had free food in there too
Where I work several doctors give the nurses gift baskets of fruit or candy. Never heard of a stocking filled with candy for the doctors. Why would it even be in the nurses station? Instead they should have left them in the Dr's office. That said there was a poor cafeteria worker fired for eating an old donut that someone had left by the cashier and was going to come back with the money, but changed their mind and never returned. That donut would have been thrown away, not saved and they fired some poor soul over that. Talk about ridiculous and cold hearted!
That makes me so sad. Poor thing ate a donut that was essentially trash.

This is a really good reminder that all of us are constantly being "on camera" - I think we tend to forget that there are recording devices everywhere from the hallways to the elevator.
Perhaps the OP took some candy and put it in her scrub pockets and that appeared to be "a violation" of some sorts to the person getting a glimpse on the recordings. Or they are just looking for a reason to fire people. Or we do not know the whole truth and more than just gummi bears went into the scrub pockets.
Whatever it is - it is a good reminder that everything we do is "public".
I would also stay away from passing candy randomly to children who are visiting on the floor - that is something you typically do not do.
