trouble stayng slim when in nursing school

I know that we have enough stress in nursing school without bringing our weight into the picture but I put on 10 pounds this past semester! I was wondering if anyone else had trouble keeping weigt off in nursing school........I think I ate more due to stress and late night studying....I didnt exercise as much and I just.....felt my clothes getting tighter. I would like to lose these 10 pounds so my clothes can fit me again and also avoid gaining weight this next semester......grrr! Does anyone have any advice or has this happened to you.....my main goal in nursing school is to pass my classes but I also would like to maintain my health and not put on weight. Help!!:uhoh3:

Anyone have the opposite problem?? I actually lost weight (and for me that's not a good thing when I was trying to gain some in the first place). A lot of days I would come back from class and take a nap and wake up around 8pm and be too lazy to fix something to eat, so I just skipped it and waited until breakfast. Then I would sleep late or just hang around too long to have time to go get real food so I would make a breakfast out of a PowerBar and coffee. The ultimate weight loss plan...at least I always took a vitamin.

I gained weight. I went from fitness junkie to fast food junkie, but now that I see the devestation that the junk food has left behind and the devestation the junk food has done to my behind I am now trying to get back into my fitness routine. It is hard. I am starting out slow and began eating better and walking. Once I get a few pounds off I will begin weight lifting again and hopefully by May I will be swimsuit ready.

OMG yes I know what you mean...I had a double whammy...nursing school and new relationship = inevitible weight gain. I would try to exercise when i could but I would also make conscious efforts to do little amouts of exercise (stairs instead of elevators...and so on) and Taco Bell was practically a religion in school I tried to pick "healtheir" fast food options. Little things to try to prevent further weight gain. I worked on losing after I finished school and still trying.

Interesting. I have noticed that I gain a couple of pounds in the beginning of a relationship. I lost 38 pounds last year. But I met a new guy, and gained 5 of them back. Oh, well since school is over :balloons: , and our relationship ended December 22nd, :crying2: I should have time to get my fluffy self back into the gym. Good luck everyone.

I just want to go back to school in about two and a half weeks looking a little slimer and my skin loking a little better.........I just want to look good! I need to start exercising and stop eating so many cookies! LOL

 I know exactly what you mean! All semester long I've been wearing "comfy clothes" to class. Partly because my classes are so early in the morning and also because I live in CT and it has been pretty cold here. The bad thing is that sweats expand with you so it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago at the end of my semester when some friends invited me out, that I pulled out some jeans to try to squeeze into.....OMG!!! Nothing fit me! I gained between 10 - 15 pounds in the last few months.

My goal is like yours - I want to go back to school looking slimmer and just better overall. I need to start exercising again and lay off the junk food too! Good luck!!!

I lost 30lbs w/ Weight Watchers and have gained all of it back since I started nursing school last fall. I am so mad at myself! I am a stress eater--big time!! My New Years resolution is to lose weight--I know I can do it! I have to..I can barely fit into my nursing uniform anymore. I am going to start eating better and exercise!! I have to look good for my pinning ceremony in May 2006. :)

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

I gained weight, big time. Stress makes me want to eat. Not to mention pressure to get it all done. I could pig out, to the point i'd get the super-sized Big Mac value meal and order another Big Mac.

Wasn't the healthiest choice, but i did my best to make my own meals (make a week's worth of lunches and dinners, so i could just grab a container and go).

I DID lose some weight, thanks to the flu, and the Intestinal Express that it brought, plus i went on a diet (reduced my bread and pasta intake, upped the veggies, drank water, no huge portions, and NO Atkins!) and lost a few more before school was out. But i didn't strain myself at it, because i always thought "if i can get through school and graduation, THEN i'll devote way more time to health". And i have to a point, but the New Year's resolution always kicks my butt in gear.

I put on about 15 lbs this last semester and I was already overweight to start with. I started Weight Watchers the week before Xmas (I know, studpid idea before the holidays), hopefully I can stick with it. My goal is lose 10 lbs before going back (Jan 18th) and be on the right track for this next semester...my goal is to lose 30 lbs by graduation (mid July).

If it makes you feel any better, I split my nursing uniform pants at clinical one day last semester! I was so embarrassed but then one of my friends confided in me that the same thing happened to her too! Luckily the uniform jackets are long enough to cover everything. I am definitely a stress eater too....:o You're not alone, that's all. Good luck with the New Years resolution!

Jamie,

I joined WW the Monday after Thanksgiving and the Monday after Christmas I was down 10.2 pounds, that was in 4 weeks, you can do it. It was my goal to lose 10 pounds by the time I went back to school January 3, hopefully I will lose a little bit more next week.

Thank you for the encouragement. I know I can lose the 10 pounds before class starts back up, it is sticking to the plan when Im at school that Im concerned about...The people I study/hang out with eat out constantly and it is so easy to follow along with them. The first week on WW I lost 6 pounds, have no idea what I lost this last week...we do not have a meeting this week. My family loves the idea that Im doing WW...It is actually forcing me to cook :( Good Luck to you with WW and also next semester.

I forgot to add this to my previous post. On the news last night they did a story on the "best diets" and Weight Watchers was #1. The said that majority of people who join and follow their plan lose the weight and keep the weight off.

I just joined WW last night.. Our classes start up again on the 19th so I am hoping to get into a groove with eating and exercising before I have to get back into the "school thing" and hopefully I will be able to keep it up through school....
