I am a transgender nursing student that is currently going to school and working as a male but I want to transition after getting my RN. My question is can my license be revoked because of this my state considers GID (gender identity disorder) as a serious mental illness will that bar me from practicing. Another question, if this isn't a problem then do I just apply for a name change how does it work?

I'm not sure how the specifics work but I did work with a nurse that did full transition after she had her license. She was a male when she started working with her license and I knew her as a female so I'm assuming that licenses and name changes were granted I'm just not sure what kind of additional paperwork or obstacles she had to go through for that. She was a traveler and when she came to work with our unit FT a lot of people knew her from her travel days as a male. And she and we had no problems with the transition. :)

Awesome that is so good to hear. Thanks for your comment. Yeah I don't know how its going to work so far. I am seeing a therapist and we both came to the agreement that it would be a lot easier to go through the transition process after completing nursing school. Nursing school is far too stressful to try to add something like this on top of it and after reading a lot of posts that have been posted regarding transitioning in nursing school I would rather not do it. I think the proper thing to do is to wait until I am finished then get my degrees changed over.

Suggestion to the OP: if that is actually your picture as your avatar, you might want to change it. Not because of your transition or orientation or anything else remotely related to that, but because we are all well-advised to maintain anonymity here, with screen names and such. You never know who's watching and doesn't like something you say. Word to the wise.

Also, legal name change is easy. For personal reasons my sweet husband changed his name legally when he retired-- anyone who has done this upon marriage understands what a process it can be. If there is no intent to defraud it is perfectly legal to change your name as often as you like. You go down to the courthouse and fill in a form, have it notarized, and then get a dozen or so notarized copies to file c your voter registration, mortgage, selective service, college, IRS, Social Security, bank, driver's license, or whomever wants the official form; ordinary copy-machine copies go to your credit cards and random other stuff. It took him about a year to get it all straightened out; we just kept a bunch of extra copies of the official ones and the duplicates to send out when one more request popped up.

thanks for the tip GrnTea

Ask a lawyer. Seriously. We can't possibly know the statutes in your state nor how your transition will affect licensure. If it is as you say I'd lawyer up STAT.

And best of luck. I hope you find peace in your "new" gender.

thanks suesquatchrn i will do that

To the OP: I just wanted to pop in with a very strong suggestion: please PLEASE change your avatar! Your own photo, on a very non-private website such as this, can potentially bring you worry, troubles, or even harm. Please consider changing it?

I'm thinking maybe it's not her, or she would have done that by now.

She has already changed it...it was different before.

Thanks for everyone's concern I have been extremely busy with being in nursing school and working a full and part time job. When I got the message I was in a bit of a hurry and just picked one of the avatars from the website.

I hope you don't think it's because we're not being welcoming. We're just very cognizant of privacy issues here for a number of reasons: public website, nursing a small community, etc. Many of us have recognized people we know in real life here based on a couple of details. Anyway, welcome to AN and welcome to nursing!
