Too old? Too young?? Career? Question:)

Published

Here I am considering nursing school at 25 after already completing one bachelors degree in Health Science (that I have yet to find a job with). I feel sometimes like I waited too long to decide but then I read other post and think otherwise. I just don't really know if my Health Science degree can benefit me alone.

So here are my questions... :)

What age did you decide to go into nursing?

When did you graduate?

AND... what field were you in prior to that??

Thanks in advance!

I am 20 and there are 40 years olds in my class. Don't let age be a factor.

You're so young (!), but I agree that you can never be too old. My mom went to nursing school in her forties after my parents divorced. I was in junior high school at the time. I'm now waiting for acceptance into a program and I just turned 38. There are many years left to work, and nursing provides so many options that I don't think you can go wrong.

At 34 I was a 9th grade high school drop out when I decided to start on a track toward RN.

RN @ 36

BSN @ 38

will start DNP within the year, and currently a CVICU nurse.

Specializes in Med/Surg and Travel Nursing.

Chiming in with everyone here, it's all a state of mind! I'm 44 now, started my pre-reqs last summer....hope to graduate RN at 47, then onto MSN/CNM at 51. What's in a number??!! =D

I decided to be a nurse at 20. I already had most of the prereqs done because I thought I would do something else in allied health. I was an LVN at 22, and a RN at 24. I'm now 27, trying to finish up some prereqs for CRNA school, and wondering if I'm getting too old to STILL be in school haha. The truth is, age is nothing but a number. My RN class had people from ages 20's-50's. I once read somewhere that the average RN grad these days is around 29 years old, and the average RN is 47.

Time is going to pass regardless of what you do. 4 years from now you can either be an RN.... or not. It all depends on how you spend your days while time ineluctably passes. You have one go around at this life. You may as well be spending that time applying yourself towards something you aspire to be, and/or doing something that you want to do.

Also make sure that nursing is something you want to do. Try to shadow a RN, or volunteer in a healthcare setting somehow. I LOVE critical care, but if I had a bachelor's degree already when I was applying to nursing school, I probably would have tried to become a PA. The job is cleaner and it pays more.

Specializes in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

I wish I could have gotten into nursing when I was 25.

However...

I got in when I was 27.

I will graduate in June of 2016.

Prior to that I had my BA in Psych that I received in 2007 when I was 21.

I was/still am (not for much longer please dear God) in retail sales/management.

I have to say that I have received compliments from instructors on my level-headedness and maturity. The life experience makes you stand out and you are able to take on so much more. You already have a Health Science degree and that will definitely add to what you have to offer. You already know what it takes to get a Bachelor's so dealing with the course load shouldn't be so much of a shock as it is to newb undergrads.

Good luck!

I started my prereqs for nursing school 2 weeks before my 40th birthday...will graduate with my BSN at 43. I was in the nonprofit field many years ago, then stayed home with my children. There are many students in my program who are in their 20s and on a second degree...go for it!

Specializes in Med-Surg, NICU.

18/19 when I started my pre-reqs, 20 when I started a BSN, graduated at 23. I hope to start an NP program next Autumn.

Everyone's replies are so amazing to read! I got a little tear in my eye haha.

It's so exciting to see what everyone has accomplished and will accomplish!

I'm not a nursing student yet but I don't think it has anything to do with age. I believe it has to do with your own will, determination, and maturity level. I'm 21 and currently doing my pre-reqs. I served 3.5 years in the army as a medic and I have 2 children and a husband. I have a lot of motive to complete my degree. Age doesn't matter, just your life experiences.

Well, I just decided to make a career change. I am 29 and will graduate September next year.

18 when I decided to be a nurse.

Became a RN at 21.

BSN at 23. I'm 25 now and start my MSN program in April.

I definitely don't think you are too old.

Go for it!
