Too old? Too young?? Career? Question:)

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Here I am considering nursing school at 25 after already completing one bachelors degree in Health Science (that I have yet to find a job with). I feel sometimes like I waited too long to decide but then I read other post and think otherwise. I just don't really know if my Health Science degree can benefit me alone.

So here are my questions... :)

What age did you decide to go into nursing?

When did you graduate?

AND... what field were you in prior to that??

Thanks in advance!

What age did you decide to go into nursing? 22

When did you graduate? 25

AND... what field were you in prior to that?? BA in Psychology, working with the DD population

I was 40 when I started nursing school. I am now 42. I graduate May 5. I am planning to start in the Fall to begin taking classes for my BSN. It's never too late.

Decided to go into nursing at age 15 and did CNA school during junior year in high school...started nursing pre-req's at at 16 (yes did high school courses and college courses same time...college classes in evenings) and started LPN school 3 months after graduating high school and became an RN-ADN one year later at age 18. (LPN at at 17)

I have been a nurse for 12 years......NEVER TOO YOUNG...OR OLD :)

Prior to degree.....I was getting an allowance for doing dishes ;) LOL ( I had to)

Currently finishing my prerequisites. If I get into the nursing program this fall Ill be 27 when I start 29 when I graduate with an ADN. Before this I majored in Fashion Merchandising and was a Visual Merchandising Manager at the Gap then was a SAHM

I love the replies! Thanks so much for taking the time!

I guess I felt like at 25 I should probably be starting or in a career because a few nurses I know are only 21! lol. At this stage in my personal relationship we're trying to buy a house and sometimes I think, "If I would have just started sooner, maybe I would be more 'settled' career wise by now." I realize 25 is still young, I think it just comes down to self pressure and wanting to finally be in a field I love. I've been receptionist in a pediatric office for 4 or 5 years now and I'm ready to move up in the world! haha

AspiringNurseMW - Fashion merchandising before nursing? What changed your mind ??

What age did you decide to go into nursing? I was forty two.

When did you graduate? 2 years ago.

AND... what field were you in prior to that?? I built houses (framing and finish work) for almost 25 years. I am now a nurse manager in a skilled nursing facility. Nursing school is hard, but was well worth it. I made friends with kids from 19 to 56. Even if you don't do it now...you can wait until you are 30 or forty like me!!!

Specializes in LTC, CPR instructor, First aid instructor..

When I started working, I was 14 years old, and worked with horses. The business owner got reported, andI got my working papers. My next job was in a laundromat. What an awful hot job that was! From there I worked at an egg processing plant. After being there for a little over a year, I became a nurses aide. I loved that job immediately. I later got married, had my children, then a few years later, I made phonograph needles, then a teacher aide and did housecleaning and house cleaning. After that I became a bus driver. I did that for 15 years. During the same time, I became a CPR and a Basic First Aid instructor. I kept 135 employers of the bus company I worked for certified in CPR and basic first aid.

Then when I moved to where I live now,I went into nursing at age 54

I ranked 4th in my class andI passed the NCLEX on my first try.

However, I was an EMT for 15 years prior to going to nursing school, and I know that helped.

Specializes in mental health / psychiatic nursing.

Not yet in nursing school. I am 27 and finishing up pre reqs. I will be applying for fall 2016 start so 29 when I start school.

Currently working as a CNA but prior to this was a paralegal working in patent law.

I knew I wanted to be a Nurse while in the navy and that was about the age of 20. I finally got around to nursing school and graduated at the ripe old age of 50. I always used myself as an example to the younger students about completing nursing school.

The hardest thing about Nursing school at an older age is that you get treated like you are a teenager.

I decided to pursue nursing after my BA in another field at age 30 and it was the best decision of my life. Not only was I accomplishing a dream, but I feel that due to my age I was able to be more responsible and committed to excelling in school. Personally, My younger twenty something self wouldn't have been ready to conquer such a demanding and stressful school curriculum. I am 33 now, have my Bachelors in Nursing, and landed my dream job in the ICU as an RN. I feel if you really have a passion, you will pursue it no matter what age you are.

First of all what an awesome thread!

It's so cool to see what everyone did prior to pre-nursing/nursing.

Age I decided: Around 18

What I did prior: Well, I took a different route but always in the medical field. First becoming a medical assistant, then I wen to school to be a respiratory therapist, where I worked in the ICU's, trauma team and flight transport. From there I went into clinical research as a Clinical Research Coordinator.

Now I'm 33 ready to finish up nursing school hoping to obtain my CCRN and apply to CRNA school.

It's NEVER to late to start your dreams.

I believe it's everyone's different backgrounds and experiences that make a good nurse =)
