I can already imagine what responses I'll get....But anyway...I and im sure, alot of other people who are pursuing a degree in Nursing are tired of some of the remarks that are made on this site regarding Nursing school! It's already stressful for many of us who are trying to get into a program and to hear such things like " when will this end," "15 people dropped out of my Nursing class last semester!!,"etc makes it even more stressful for us! Nursing school is not easy , but Im sure it's not "Hell." I have known many people who applied and got accepted into Nursing school with a 2.7.Uhmmmm, thats "pretty average Joe" to me and hey, they're pretty good Nurses now.

Well, this thread is a hoot. I guess perception really is reality.

Sooo. I'm feeling a little stressed lately. The major news networks must stop the discouraging, downer news stories. You know...I don't want to hear about death and disease and war dagnabit! It's getting me too down...so stop talking about it! Maybe if we don't talk about it - it won't exist. Ya..that. I am the master of my universe, and yours too.

:w00t:

*satire* off now. To the OP, I'm trying to use some gentle humor to show you where you've gone off the beam here. It sounds like you have become anxious enough to mess up boundaries a bit. Don't worry...it's a common thing to do. Does this make any sense to you?

I'm too tired to answer this thread. Why? Because I am a nursing student who just finished an ethics paper, a group presentation, clinical at the cancer center with aching feet and back, Then took a test today, have another test tomorrow, my student evaluation, an assignment for another class and a care plan due. did I mention I haven't had ANY relaxation??? and all that is the honest to God truth. All this week- one class- except the one assignment.

Before nursing school, I didn't study. I made As. I had a 3.85 going into nursing- with ALL pre-reqs. People told me it would be hard, and it still didn't prepare me. This will probly be the hardest thing I EVER do. Finish out your first semester and tell me if you don't think it's hell.

don't mean to be discouraging. i really don't. but trust me ....your post will be ALOT different once you are done with school and get your first job. maybe even before. venting can be good for your mental health.

:rotfl: I whole heartedly agree!!! I will be patiently waiting to see that post!

Some programs, unfortunately, don't go by GPA to get accepted. It's first come, first serve on a waiting list. This is bad because they are accepting some people who cannot do college level work and these people don't do well and end up failing out. In the meantime, that spot could have gone to someone who could have done very well. My school was like this and when I suggested that they should go back to using GPA's and test scores(or at least an interview!) to select students, I was told I was "elitist". Funny thing, though, just recently, they've started raising the standards and they may go back to an entrance exam to determine who gets in first. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware that some people don't test well etc but when you have people who cannot do 5th grade math, write a proper sentence, or have little to no reading comprehension skills, it's a scary thing.

You know I have a 2.9 and i'm very capable of doing 5th grade math! GPA isn't everything! I also think its terrible for the school to go by a persons GPA based off only a few classes. They do not take into account course load. I think a C in psych that is taken along with micro, a&P and physics is better than an A in psych that was taken on its own...but thats just my two cents.

Nursing school is not rocket science but it's HARD and UNMERCIFUL.

:yeahthat:

especially the unmerciful part!

It is wise to refrain from going into nursing wearing a rose-colored pair of glasses. There are positive and negative aspects of nursing, and I would want to know all about the benefits and drawbacks if I were a student. It's in your best interests to read the occasional vents rather than pretend that everything is rosy about the field.

Amen to this.....this board has made me think of nursing at so many other angles that I would have otherwise never considered.

A lot of us come to Allnurses to talk about what is going on in our lives, so the board is skewed a bit towards the negative, even though the reality is not all negative.

I don't think it's a good idea to discourage people from honestly expressing their frustrations because it's here where we get the support we need to make it through the day.

People mean to talk about reality, not to discourage others, but to talk about what's real.

If the negative posts are a turnoff, then don't tune in.

you say " I am sure its not hell" which leads me to believe you are not actually in a RN program. While you are entitled to your opinions, so are we and if we want to tell the TRUTH when asked OUR experience with school we are certainly within our rights to do so. And when you actually do get into a nursing program, I guarantee you there will be days you wanna just curl up and bawl, and will look around your lecture hall to see students dropping like flies. it is the nature of the beast. and no it is not ALL bad, but it is stressful, time consuming sometimes happy, sometimes painful.

Top 10 Subtle Differences Between Nursing School and Hell

1. You wouldn't tell a friend to go to nursing school.

2. You know there are hot women/men in Hell.

3. You only have to sell your soul to get into Hell.

4. People smile in Hell.

5. Hell is forever. Nursing school just seems like it.

6. At least you can sleep in Hell.

7. You can't flunk out of Hell.

8. It is more fun getting into Hell.

9. Everyone has heard of Hell.

10. It doesn't rain in Hell.

Nursing school is Hell, I've seen people not make it, health problems from stress from classmates that's unbelievable. I think that one thing that helps you is your classmates (the circle of friends you make through classes) and this website. No-one understands unless they've been through it. all i ever hear from relatives is aren't you graduated yet? i just want to make an announcement so i don't have to repeat myself 5,000 times throughout the night. No i'm not done with school, I'm doing a BSN program which means AT LEAST 4 years. 40% or more do it in 5 YEARS!! I HAPPEN to fall in THAT catagory, yes i'm in clinicals, yes i'm learning a lot, but i WON'T be done for another 18 months, SO when you get a GRADUATION ANNOUNCMENT THEN I WILL BE DONE!!

When you get in, come and vent you will understand then!! Good luck with nursing school!!

RNSoon, I know what you are saying. Sometimes I wonder why exactly nursing school is so stressful. I wouldn't exactly say it is HARD, because honestly I do not think it is so taxing intellectually. Put it is stressful, and fast-paced, and the stakes are high. Falling just a little behind in your reading can make you flunk a quiz and put on track to flunk a class. The grading scales are the 90-100=A from most science classes-they're harder. People do flunk. That said, most people get through it, even many people who aren't mental giants. It's just stressful.

P.S. Today I don't want to quit, but I sure wish I could do today's clinical over and not screw up like I did!

I would like to hear your feedback after the first 7 weeks of nursing school. I watched my daughter go through it and it didn't have the same impact as when you go through it yourself. You are thrown into a new culture and language. Every day we hear if you don't pass this you have one more chance and your out. We are halfway through the first semester and have lost 8 due to not passing the dosage calculation test. 19 out of 52 failed the midterm. So it is always in the back of your mind that you could fail and any given time. So don't be so quick to judge until you have walked in the shoes of the first semester nursing student.
