Tom Cruises' take on Psychiatry

Specialties Psychiatric

Published

I just finished watching the Today show interview that Matt Lauer did with Tom Cruise. I'm quite simply mystified by his take on psychiatry. He claims to know more about it than just about anyone, including those with medical degrees. I'm just curious about what others think about his vocal opinion on the subject. Am I crazy or does HE need a psychiatrist?

I meant to say that THERE are suggestions in the article to help wean one off of drugs....with healthy eating.

Article...... Meals that Heal

First paragragh quote:

"There's a growing awareness that simple choices like what we eat play a powerful role in our health and well being-not only in preventing disease but also in feeeling better and in the quality of life," Says Dr. Dean Ornish President of the Preventive Medicine Research Insititute in Sausalito, California.

They also recommend that if you are already taking medications for your ailments, don't stop taking them....but there are some suggestions to help wean you off of drugs........and IN MY opinion help break the cycle of genetic patterns of behavior....like binge eating, alcohol, depression, no exercise.

:)

Cruise has bought into the scientology scam. In the words of a far greater actor, "What a moroon!" -- B. Bunny

Just read an article in today's Chicago Tribune....middle of the front section. It basically said that Mr. Cruise is NOT welcome in Paris, and that the country believes Scientology is a cult.

I would attempt to add a line where the article could be accessed, but don't know how to do that......sorry! :o

Is it my imagination or has he quieted down some--or maybe I'm just not paying attention to him anymore. Hopefully someone told him to give it a rest.

He's quieted down, once his movie opened. I'm sure we'll hear from him again when he needs to generate some more publicity for himself.

After he and Kate marry, they'll more and likely hit the media pushing their anti psyche meds, etc., as a duo. Stay tuned! Tom is ready to take a serious bang at the end of his career I do believe. He may be the next Hubbard, or a runner up for his position.

Another Trib reader! I agree wholeheartedly.

Tom Cruise is just another in a long line of those that know nothing about medicine, but think they do. I've been told by numerous people for years that I am "drugging" my child because I put him on Ritalin for ADD. I heard Kelly Preston a few years back on a radio station with her anti-ritalin stance. Is it overprescribed?...sure. Is it a street drug?..sure - if used for purposes other than ADD/DHD so is the new cough medicine for HBP. If ADD is a learned behavior, explain to me why only one of my kids has it? I'm so sick of these so called celebrity experts and common folk trying to practice medicine, I could scream. They are causing more harm than good. Sure we shouldn't care what they think, but they are doing harm to those who will not seek help based on their rantings. They are causing stigma for those that really do need help.

Why is it so hard for people to except drugs for the brain, but not for any other part of the body? It is beyond me to understand. Do they tell you that ADD/ADHD kids are at higher risk for suicide, drug addiction and basic self esteem issues? No. They do NOT understand true ADD, depression or any other disorder of the brain.

Sorry to rant, but I'm so sick of these people.

Well I liked Risky Business but Tommy deserves a spanking for this latest stunt. I just pray no devoted fan will stop taking their meds and end up dead or in critical care somewhere thanks to this man's ignorance.

Me too, kathc. I had to tell my sister (who has a degree in Special Education that she received in 1980 and has never used in providing direct services to children. Her career has been in administrating community programs) and my mother, who was being spoon-fed my sister's opinions, that either they defer to my judgment when it came to medicating my son or we were about to have a pretty significant conflict in this family. Now, having seen how successful the medication has been in enabling my son, who has autism with severe ADHD-like manifestations, to attend a neighborhood school and have a close-to-typical childhood, both of them have changed their thinking as concerns these types of meds. Tom Cruise and Kelly Preston are clueless, and how nice for them to not have had to make the difficult decision to medicate their children. I hate giving my son this pill every day. I would also hate having to send him to a "special" school because the neighborhood school just couldn't support the needs caused by his inattention, tantrums and anxiety. I think even more, I would hate the fact that my son didn't get to enjoy the experiences kids without ADHD or similar conditions take for granted- having friends to sit with at lunch, to hang out with after school, to invite to birthday parties, and to just grow up with in general. It breaks my heart every time a parent tells me about how their child gets picked on or ridiculed, and I have been very grateful that my son has avoided becoming a target for that sort of behavior. I don't suggest that the medication is solely responsible, because he has had great teachers and we've done lots of work with him at home, too. The bottom line is that none of this would have been possible without the meds "leveling the field" so to speak. Even though science does not yet understand the exact mechanisms that cause our kids' difficulties, our knowledge has certainly far surpassed the point where anyone who isn't an idiot understands the biological basis of these disorders. It makes no more sense to argue against medication for these symptoms than it does to argue against the use of insulin to control glucose levels or Imitrex to treat a migrane.

Thank you for the many web links! They are great!

Problem with online petitions is they really don't work IMO. It's clear TC is digging himself a deep hole with his attitudes about meds and such. I've seen comments about him on nearly every board I visit. A new W interview with Katie Holmes is also causing a stir. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,162082,00.html

I'm really surprised people would take TC serious about a medical issue, but unfortunately there are a lot of gullible people in this world. I'd love to see the scientologists outed for who they really are, but they've been scrutinized so many times and they never go away. I hear their numbers are shrinking, but I think that has a lot to do with the Internet and communication.

Btw: They are against non-psych medications as well, but I'm not clear as to how that really works. I know an epileptic died at their facility because he wasn't allowed to take those meds, as well as a few other mysterious deaths.

Like, why was this doctor prescribing Valium and Noctec (Choral Hydrate) to Lisa before her death? http://www.lisamcpherson.org/sp_times_8-4-01.htm

Even LRH's own son :http://www.whyaretheydead.net/

I read the website. The title of this post is what I am left with after reading only a small portion.

Left dumbfounded. Is this the religion that preaches each man is going to have a planet of his own? I heard something about that kind of religion in college.

Here's what the LRH books teach is the history of scientology:

Dianetics and all his schizophrenic writings can be cross referenced to this. They really believe this nonsense.
