Can you believe the comments Tom Cruise made on the Today show about Brooke Sheilds and her PPD, and her use of medication to treat it?!:angryfire What the heck does he know about it? I say if a woman is suicidal and visualizing her infant hitting a wall, she needs medication and counseling. I think it was very irresponsible for him to go on national television and criticize women who use medication to help them out in such a difficult time in their lives. I've never experienced PPD, only the regular "Baby Blues" and I must say during that time I wasn't able to control my emotions (esp the tears:crying2: ) and i've never been that way before. Shame on Tom...... and Kudos to Brooke for getting help.
We were discussing this at work yesterday and many of us came to the conclusion that Tom is off his rocker. I would also like to point out that Andrea Yates was beyond PPD and well into psychosis. I don't know the case well, but maybe she had propblems with this before her pregnancies? I'm sure the sleep deprivation and all the hormonal changes and inability to take many meds with all of her many pregnancies didn't help her much.I used to work in psych and have seen PP psychosis up close and personal--been attacked by a patient with it who was hallucinating that helicopters were landing on the roof and the government was coming to take her away. This woman had no other history of psychosis. Luckily, that is very rare.
Perhaps Tom would just have advised Mrs. Yates to have more children, regulate her diet and run, after all, he KNOWS the history of psychiatry. He may think he knows the history but he doesn't have a clue concerning the eithology or dynamics of mental illness.

I just read the whole thread and have to say something. Anything Tom has to say is his own uneducated blather. Anyone who is educated, for instance Brooke with a degree from Princeton, will just dismiss him as ignorant. I did the minute he opened his mouth. It is sad that there are those who take his every word as law. If you are knowledgable and believe whole heartedly what you are saying you don't have to be rude and hateful like Tom Cruise in all of his interviews or even argue any point. As a nurse we all know he is nuts on all of this
I don't know if he is "nuts" as you put it, I am not qualified to diagnose. And I do believe he has a right to his opinion, and even has the right to say on National Television what his opinion is. It would have been nice to hear him say,"I believe that .........or you know this works for me....... but you have to do what works for you",etc. That is an opinion clearly stated. He was not giving his opinion, he was passing judgement and in order to do that you really have to have a little different occupation than actor. Like possibly.....Supreme Being.....or Higher Self....or Creator, I dont know something like that.
Hey I have an idea (granted keep in mind I'm very nice and you catch more fly[s with honey type) and weird I guess,. But I bet Tom would change his tune if every post partum women who had PPD showed up on his doorstep for "education and support" let the hormones and screaming children arrive for 5 minutes and HE'LL be begging for drugs!!!!!!
:rotfl:
Tom's "church", the Church of Scientology, was declared a cult in England. (For this useage of cult, I mean an organization whose primary purpose is declared to be recruiting new members and fundraising). I will probably get flamed, but this little fact cheers me up and makes me feel better about his remarks.
No offense, 'BlueEyes, but Paris, France, also agreed to this statement. There was a big article in the Chicago Tribune on 7/14.
I would hate to have this thread go the same way the other one did. PPD is NOT a fun subject. Our hormones already run rampant in pregnancy.....then crash right after giving birth. 2 of my co-workers are on Celexa and or Zoloft, and I have seen them when they didn't get the prescription refilled.
They swear they would NOT have been able to survive having a child around the house if they had PPD besides.
Sorry to ramble.

I did not argue about about Tom's statement being false. If you read my posts, I have supported Brooke Shield's viewpoint from day one. I suffered PPD with both my kids. I know what it's like that that it is a legitmate medical disorder needing prompt and careful treatment. No offense, 'BlueEyes, but Paris, France, also agreed to this statement. I argue that it is questionable whether we can call this church a cult.

oh----trust me; I do NOT condone his words and actions, but hardly feel qualifed to judge if he is bipolar and/or mentally ill at all.
