Today's Mini Rant

Specialties School

Published

I don't typically rant on here . . . and I don't know why my patience today is low . . . BUT----

1) Take kid off bus early for vomiting, chills and temp 99.8. Ten minutes later, temp 101.5, call parent who says "can't you just give him some medicine and let him rest? Parent arrives 75 minutes later . . . temp now 102.5 . . . kid wouldn't take Tylenol . . .

2) Staff member who says "can you listen to my heart?" Me: "Why?" Her: "It doesn't feel right. I can't feel it." putting her hand on her chest. No pain, no SOB, no history, denies palpitations . . . . I listen and get normal, regular AR/Radial Rate. Me: "if IT (whatever that is) doesn't go away, see your doctor. I don't see any emergent problem."

Sigh . . . . Happy Wednesday fellow wonder nurses!

My mini rant - I have a student that will fake faint to get attention. She pulled this a few times while I was out on maternity leave. Well, she pulled it on me today. I never seen someone gracefully fall to the floor while fainting and her arms were nicely placed under the side of her face. I kept telling her to open her eyes but she wouldn't. After 2 minutes I told her I am calling 911, her eyes opened immediately. It's a medical miracle!

I had one in the past try this on me. STERNAL RUB is all I got to say!! It turns out her academy award winning moment could not be sustained.

Neither do we. No Farawyn is a change. Do you see what you've done? You've become the very thing you despise. For shame.

Tough Love!! Take it to her Kidz!! If she tries to run, I'll catch her and drag her back.

I would have but when I was on maternity leave staff had the paramedics come, Mom told the office manager to tell the paramedics do not do a sternal rub.

LOL???? What, is mom a medical professional? Or, has the student done this elsewhere outside of school where paramedics have been called? Otherwise, how would mom know to ask for them not to do a sternal rub??? Red flag!

Mom is not a medical professional. The staff does not know why mom requested no sternal rub and I haven't gotten an answer from mom.

I am in no way qualified to diagnose but it sounds like you have might-need-spring-break-itis.

I also took a random BP in an adult with three doctors and enough medical problems for 10 people. Because "it was low" on Friday at the doctor.

Hang in there! We have 2 days left until spring break! How many do you have?

We have 6 1/2 weeks?. We go on Spring Break the week after Easter. I can't even start a count down yet. I do have a PD day in a week from Monday, so there's that to look forward to.

This is one of the main ways how we sort out the pretenders among the seizure crowd in the prison system. It's amazing how quickly that the post-ictal state resolves sometimes.

Just hold her hand straight up over her face, when she doesn't smack herself you'll know it's fake (don't tell her that otherwise next time she will smack herself), tell her to get up and go back to class.

Wet your fingers and flick water at her face. Someone who is unconscious will not react. Someone who is faking will flinch when the water hits them. Just keep a cup of water on your desk where you can quickly and discreetly wet your fingers.
