To drop or to stay?

So I'm in first semester and you're allowed to fail two tests. I received a 66% on both the first and second test. I HAVE to pass the third to keep going. Even if I do pass the third exam. my professor said I need to "more then pass" to raise my average testing grade. (minimum 75% to pass) And she also mentioned just because I pass the third one, it also means I need to more then pass the fourth test and then our fifth test the cumulative exam. Which I do understand.

The week of the third exam is also the last week to drop the class with a "W"

I worked really really hard to get here and I'm really not ready to just give up. I'm currently on spring break so I have this week off to catch up on studying which I'm planning to do all week.

But I'm also trying to think realistically because I actually studied really really hard on the second exam all just to get a 66%. (I know I must be doing something wrong, I've spoken to my teachers about this)

I'm going to study my @$$ off this week and all up until the third exam.. but even if I do pass the third exam would you keep going or drop to be safe?

just a general background on my school, if I drop I would have to reapply next year. And I would not be a guaranteed a spot back in my school.

Also a background on myself.. I was in a similar situation when I took my EMT class I needed an 80% testing average and I was on the lower end of the spectrum. I decided to stick it out and managed to raise my testing average to an 82% by the end of the semester. I know I can't compare EMT to nursing because nursing is SO much harder but I just remember being in the same situation and pushing through this and being happy that I didn't drop and toughed it out.

That's up to you. Would you like to quit now (and not know what could have been if you gave it your all) or would you like to try and give it your all until the very end?

I would personally keep going, study different types of materials (not just books... Try youtube videos, picture books, pinterest, tutor, group study, etc.

Good luck with whetever you decide :)

Time for a heart to heart with the nursing retention coordinator, your nursing advisor, or the director of the program for some down to earth advice. I would tend to advise you to take the safe way out by dropping and starting to study the material over from day one as well as work extensively on your study habits, or whatever is determined to be the problem(s). But you need a realistic statement from the school on whether you can be readmitted next year. If they can't give you a reasonable assurance on that level, you might as well go for broke and take it from there. Good luck.

A "W" is better than an "F". But before you do anything, talk to your nursing director. You need to make sure you will be able to come back in a semester or two.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am not sure if I will be let back in there are no guarantees she said. And also I would have to wait til next spring to reapply again so that would be a year from now to start in Fall of 2016 or Spring 2017.

Have you gotten a chance to review your exams and see what went wrong?

I did always review each test with my teacher on a one on one session. I just took test 3 this week. And managed to pull off an 83%! I have pulled my overall grade up from a 66% to a 72%. I have decided to stay even though it is a risk.

That is fantastic. Keep working harder and best of luck.

Good for you! Now keep that fire lit and pull on through!

Did you learn nothing from the "I failed out of nursing school," article? Appeal!
