To Drop or Not to Drop....

Published

Hello again!

I have a predicament. I'm currently taking my prerequisites for an ABSN degree. I have nearly finished 3/6 required classes, and need 3 more which I intended to take this fall in order to apply and start my ABSN in May.

Then...my plans kind of got threw for a loop.

I found out I'm pregnant. (HUGE surprise and NOT part of my plan at all...we were done with our 7 babies!!!)

So I'm kind of torn on what to do. I'm only 6 weeks, and part of me is afraid to drop my fall classes for fear should something happen, I will have lost my opportunity to start nursing school in May. If I don't drop, then I'm not sure how to handle Chemistry, A&P 2, and Nutrition along with a high risk pregnancy. I thought about dropping the Nutrition until the spring semester because I've done online classes before with a newborn, but again, I'm not sure what kind of complications my baby may have.

What would you do in my situation? I really, really, really want to go back to school to be a nurse. If I could find a way to find childcare for a 2 month old I would totally still continue with my plan to start school in May, but I don't see that happening. :(

That is against my beliefs and I would never do that.

I found out I was pregnant (fourth child) midway through the Spring semester. I've never had a high risk pregnancy, I was taking A&PII and microbiology plus labs. I got A's in everything and applied to nursing school, and was accepted for fall. I'll be 26ish weeks when I start. It is a very personal decision that you have to make. You know what you can handle. You know your support system. Sometimes life happens.

I'd take the fall classes, have the Spring off and see how it goes. You could always wait a year to attend an ASBN program if needed.

Good luck.

Thanks ladies.

I'll have to think on what to do, because you want what is best for everyone.

I had 2 high risk pregnancies & couldn't work or go to school. If you have 7 children & you have a high risk pregnancy then it sounds like you have to put school on the back burner.

After the pregnancy can you go on birth control, use condoms or have your husband or yourself get clipped? Eight children is a lot to handle then add nursing school on top of that, I'd pull out my hair!

It's important to get good grades in your nursing prerequisites so it's easier to get accepted into a nursing program. If you can get good grades then continue school or if you can't handle this semester then wait because it's not worth getting bad grades in your important prerequisite classes.

Good for you! Sickening how abortion would even be brought up as an option. If you already had a baby and it had special needs which conflicted with your nursing plans, would "Simplistic" have thought killing your baby an option? Probably not. But, since the baby is still in vitro, it's fair game. Sickening.

An ABSN program is no picnic for anyone, even those with no children or medical issues. In the past, many have reported that they were forced to backtrack into traditional BSN programs because they could not keep up with the academic pace. If it were me, I would take the prerequisite courses, then put school on the back burner at least until after the birth of the child. Then, as far as having a new one added to the equation, a decision will have to be made as to when to start school. I would strongly consider a traditional program at that point to avoid the unnecessary added stress.

I am sorry, but there is absolutely nothing sickening about an abortion being brought up. It is a medical procedure that has been around for literally thousands of years. While you may not agree with having an abortion yourself, you should never call this procedure "sickening". Women have them for many reasons and it is there choice. It is not a decision that was made lightly and is not something easily forgotten. I spent an entire semester interviewing women for a paper on abortion and what I heard will stay with me for the rest life. One woman actually committed suicide because she could not live with what society deemed "sickening" despite getting help. And, scientifically speaking, a baby that has already been born and a 6 week old fetus are two very different things with very different survival rates. Do not bash Simplistic for giving abortion as a possible option. It was not mentioned in the original posting that this was something against her beliefs and that she would not do. Let's stop judging people for doing what they think is best for themselves. People really need to start supporting each other more rather than tear everyone down. Nobody is perfect.

@7munchkins, I applaud you for your decision to stick with your beliefs. I hope that this pregnancy goes as smoothly as possible because your health and your little one are what matter. I think it will boil down to what your physician advises and whether or not you think you are capable of handling those classes. If it is stressful on your body then it is perfectly fine to delay. I had five pregnant women in my classes last semester and they were able to successfully complete the semester. They had to be cautious around some chemicals we used and some had to step out time to time because of some odors present. I would also recommend starting the hunt for childcare to see if you are able to even find anything. You have a little less than a year to see if you can find a suitable option for you. I was raised by live-in nannies and I am so thankful. May your eighth munchkin be strong and healthy.

No, its not sickening. Its reality. Theres no reason to get so defensive. Some people have differing views.
